“Do you want to move in with me?” Chrissie asked quietly.
“Are you serious?” I stopped in my tracks, tears filling my eyes.
“It’s just an idea,” Chrissie told me. “If you were thinking of moving in with Adam or something, just say so.”
“I want to live with you,” I told her, and I pulled her in for a hug. I’d already discussed our living arrangements with Adam, after deciding I couldn’t cope with Melissa anymore, and we’d decided it was too soon for us to move in together. We’d rather carry on enjoying things the way they were.
“This is amazing!” Kelly screeched. “I’ll come over all the time for girlie nights! We can give each other manicures and pedicures and facials—”
“And have pillow fights,” Ryan suggested. “In your underwear.” He stopped talking as we all glared at him. “What? That’s what women do, isn’t it?”
“Somebody hit him,” I said with a sigh. Ryan took off through the airport, Matt and Dylan chasing him.
“It might be fun, though,” Kelly mused.
“Pillow fights?” Chrissie asked.
“Yeah.” She watched our reactions, and then cackled with laughter.
“Who’s coming to Dylan’s?” Matt asked when we caught up with them outside the terminal building.
“Well, I don’t really drink,” I told them seriously, before breaking into a grin.
“Next you’ll be telling us you don’t wear heels!” Chrissie said, looking down at my new cowboy boots, which had a low heel.
“Go on then – just one drink.”
Then I caught sight of Adam walking towards us.
“Did I miss Margaret?” he asked.
“Yep,” I told him. “She’s gone.”
“I got stuck at work.”
“We’re all going to Dylan’s,” I told him as we walked towards the car park.
“There’s a surprise!”
“See you there,” Matt called when we split up.
“I missed you.” Adam turned to me when we reached his car.
“I only saw you yesterday.” I grinned at him.
“I know.” In the car, he kissed me, then reached behind my seat. “I’ve got a present for you.”
I grinned, taking the flat package from him and pulling at the brown paper that covered it. “One of your photos?”
“What do you think?”
I opened it, uncovering a photo of a huge oak tree, halfway up a lush green field, a stream running in the foreground and the sky a beautiful bright blue above. A bench with a figure sitting on it was just visible in the background. I gasped. “It’s amazing. Is this where we were the day you did the photo shoot for Angela?”
He nodded. “I’m calling it ‘Lucy through the lens’.”
“Oh!” I looked more closely at the figure sitting on the bench in the distance. “That’s me! I love it. Thank you.” I kissed him and looked again at the photo as Adam started the engine. “But I had all those bags at my feet … Where have they gone?”
He managed to keep a straight face while he reversed out of the parking space. “Do you really need me to explain the concept of editing?”
I smiled. “Actually, I think I know a bit about that already.”
