Sebastian Page 23

by Lagomarsino, Giulia

He took a corner way too fast and I was flung into the door. I quickly pulled on my seatbelt so I didn’t end up through the windshield.

“I didn’t commit murder. He pulled a gun on me, so I distracted him and shot him.”

“And you killed him? Not just scared him or grazed him?”

“Nope. Dead center in the middle of the chest, just like you taught me.” I said proudly.

“Why do I not believe you?”

“Okay, well he was only standing ten feet from me, but still, I nailed him. Dead as a doornail.”

“Yeah, let’s hold off on telling Cap any of that information until absolutely necessary.”

We swung into a small airport and sped over to a small aircraft. I could see Sebastian peeking out of the door of the plane, firing at the small hangar. Sinner pulled up to the plane, parking in front of the stairs.

I hopped into the backseat to get the door for Sebastian and the young woman that was running down the stairs with him.

“Your chariot awaits, Cap.” Sinner had rolled down the window to yell to Sebastian. When I opened the door and Sebastian saw me, he stalled momentarily, but gun fire got him moving again.

“You brought my girlfriend? What the fuck were you thinking? Were you hoping to attract trouble?”

  “She’s my back up.”

  “Your what?”

Gunshots pinged off the SUV and I waited for them to stop before flinging open the door facing the hanger and taking a few shots. When I saw a man drop to the ground, I squealed, raising my gun in the air and doing a happy dance. Sebastian reached around me and pulled the door closed.

“Get the fuck out of here!”

“I shot him! Did you see that, Sinner? He went down.”

“Why are you holding a gun and when did you learn to shoot?”

  “Sinner’s been teaching me.”

“Freckles, I thought we agreed to save that information for when it was absolutely necessary.”

The tires squealed as we took another corner and headed out of the airport. I looked out the back window and saw two cars following us.

“There are two following us,” I shouted to Sinner.

“Two on our six,” he corrected. “Don’t say ten words when four will do.”

  “I didn’t say ten words.”

“He’s trying to teach you about shorthand. The longer you speak, the less time you have to shoot.” Sebastian said before turning to Sinner. “Why are you teaching her shorthand? And why are you teaching her to shoot?”

“For protection. Someone just up and left her unprotected, so someone had to make sure she could take care of herself.”

“I didn’t leave her unprotected. She left me, remember?”

“They’re gaining on us,” I said as I watched the boys have their little argument. I started digging through the supplies in the trunk, looking for something that could slow down the cars behind us. I seriously doubted I could shoot anything while in a moving car.

One of the cars pulled up fast alongside the SUV and rammed into our side. Sebastian shoved the trembling woman, who I just really noticed, down onto the floor and rolled down the window. He fired off shot after shot until the car swerved and went off the road into the ditch on the other side. We still had one car behind us.

I continued going through the trunk, finding some kind of awesome looking gun. It was huge and looked like a mini canon. I lifted the heavy thing up, but Sinner nixed me from the front seat.

“Don’t even think about using a launcher. It’s too heavy for you and you’ll get us killed.”

I set it back down and dug some more.

“I still don’t understand why you brought Freckles. You do remember all the trouble she attracted before, right? Did you hope that bringing her would get more action for you?”

“She’s fun to keep around, see?”

He nodded in the mirror toward me. I was holding up two grenades like they were gold. This was going to be fun.

“Just pull the pin and throw?” I asked.

  “Yep. Let ‘er rip.”

  “Awesome.”

The trembling woman on the floor covered her head and whimpered. “Oh my, God. I’m gonna die.”

“No you won’t, sweetie. Sebastian’s really good at his job.”

“Hey! What about me?” Sinner asked in indignation.

“You’re good too, sweetie. Alright. Here goes nothing.”

I moved to roll down the window, but Sebastian stopped me.

“You seriously think that I’m going to let you use that thing?”

“Oh! I totally forgot to tell you the reason I’m here.”

“And you need to do that now?”

“Yes. I’m here to get a job with you.”

  “As what?”

“A field agent. See, this way we can be together.”

“What makes you qualified to be a field agent?”

He leaned out the window and took a few shots at the car that was trying to gain on us, then reloaded his gun with a new clip.

  “I have mad shooting skills.”

“It’s true. She shot and killed someone this morning,” Sinner said with pride from the driver’s seat. I beamed at his compliment.

  “You what?”

“Yep. Totally true. So, here I am. Ready to go into training. I figure this is a pretty good interview.”

“You’re insane. There is no way I’m hiring you to go into the field with any of my men.”

“Why not?” I asked like I was confused.

“Because shooting one man does not make you qualified. Sinner, get us away from this asshole.”

“Trying, Cap, but you’re distracting me with this indecision. Just hire her so that we can get on with it.”

“Why don’t you hire me to do research then? I can help Becky out?”

“Why do you want to come work with me?”

“So I can be close to you. Duh.”

“Why now? Why not a month ago?”

“Do you think we could get someplace safe before you two go into counseling? You’re supposed to be keeping me safe!” The woman on the floor screamed with a shrill to her voice.

“Relax, sweetheart. With Annie Oakley back there, you’re perfectly safe,” Sinner said. I noticed that we were now far from Reed Security and in the middle of nowhere. I wondered briefly where Sinner was taking us, but was snapped out of my thoughts by Sebastian.

  “Why now, Freckles?”

“When I shot Darren this morning, the first thing that popped in my head was that I wished you were there to tell me I should have had my gun ready or I shouldn’t have been walking in an alley-”

“You were walking in an alley? Jesus, Freckles. It’s like you didn’t learn a damn thing.”

“See? You understand what I mean, right? This is good between us. Then I walked in on Aggie and Harry doing the horizontal mambo and we talked-”

“While they were having sex?” Sinner asked in disgust.

“No. That image is seared into my brain, though. Anyway, Harry told me that if I wanted you, I had to come show you that you were all I wanted.”

“That’s so fucking wonderful, but can we please discuss this when I’m not curled up on the floor of a fucking SUV!”

I leaned down to speak with the woman.

“Sweetie, do you need something for anxiety? I think Sebastian keeps something in here in case the guys get shot.”

“Will you move that fucking gun out of my face?” She screeched.

“Oops.” I pulled the gun away from her and faced Sebastian once more.

“So, you want me now? Now that you had a life altering experience? That’s not good enough, Maggie.”

“Ouch. Using my name? That’s harsh. No. I realized that I love you and as much as I love my job, it just isn’t worth it without you.”

Sebastian stared at me for a minute. “I’m not letting you go into the field.”

“How about this? You let me throw th
e grenade and I’ll do only research with Becky. Maybe a little field investigation?”

  “I’ll think about it.”

“Okay, so I pull the pin and throw?”

“Yeah, don’t hesitate or we’ll all end up in pieces on the side of the road.”

“Oh, God. I don’t want to die!” The woman yelled.

  “Don’t worry, honey. I’m a quick learner.”

I rolled down the window and gave a loud yeeha before pulling the pin and launching the grenade, left handed I might add. The grenade came up short, but then the car drove over it and was right on top of it when it exploded. The car lifted off the ground and burst into flames.

“Whoo! Splash four!” I turned to Sebastian who was grinning at me. “I always wanted to say that.”

Sebastian moved across the seat to me, pulling me into his arms. “That was so sexy.”

“Does that mean you’ll teach me how to use the launcher?”

  “Not a chance in hell.”

He kissed me fiercely, possessing me mind, body, and soul. “I love you, Freckles.”

  “I love you, too, Cap.”
