Prologue
Stretching her naked body in satisfaction, Lexi Matthews sighed. “Five years. I can’t believe we’ve been married for five years.”
Noah nuzzled her neck. “Five of the best years of my life. I wouldn’t trade them for anything in the world.”
“That’s good to hear, because you’re stuck with me.” She pinched his bare stomach.
“Consider me the happiest man in the world.”
They were taking some extra time after Noah completed his business, north of San Francisco, to celebrate their five-year wedding anniversary.
Noah stood up and walked over to the wall of windows that faced the Pacific Ocean. “I remember the Atlantic was so calm that day, but here, this ocean is angry.”
Rolling over on her side Lexi, enjoyed the view of her husband’s naked backside. “Passionate—let’s call it passionate. It sounds better than angry.”
Noah glanced at her over his shoulder and raised his eyebrow. “I don’t think an ocean can be passionate.”
Shrugging, she looked innocently at him. “Or maybe I’m just thinking of you.”
Flashing her his trademark wicked grin, he wiggled his eyebrows at her. “Well, darling, what can I say? You bring out the savage beast in me.”
Lexi giggled and clawed the air. “Rawr.”
Standing there with his mouth open, Noah shook his head. “Did you really just rawr at me? You’ve been hanging out with the Troublesome Trio too much.” Leaping into bed with her, he danced his fingers up and down the side of her body.
“Stop.” Lexi couldn’t catch her breath.
“Promise you won’t do that again.”
“I… I… can’t.”
“What do you mean you can’t?”
“Hello… we have… children… It’s going to… come up.”
“Damn, you’ve got me there. Fine, only in regards to playing with the girls will you rawr.”
“Deal.”
Once Noah stopped tickling her, she jumped out of bed. “You didn’t put an age limit on ‘girls.’”
“Oh, no you didn’t.”
“Oh yes, I did.” She held her hands up to stop him. “You can’t go back now.”
“Damn. Fine, now come back to bed.”
“No tickling, right?”
“No tickling.”
“For at least the rest of the weekend.”
Noah rolled his eyes. “Yes, for at least the rest of the weekend.”
“Okay.” Lexi climbed back into bed and into his arms. “This is a little slice of Heaven.”
“It sure is.”
“I wonder how the girls are.”
“Being spoiled rotten by their aunts, uncles, and grandmothers.”
“They’re only going to be young once. Pretty soon they’ll want nothing to do with any of us.”
“That’ll never happen. We’re always going to be the cool parents all the kids are going to want to hang out with.”
“Keep telling yourself that.” Lexi rolled her eyes.
“Are you saying as I get older I’m not going to be as cool?”
“Of course not. I’m just saying, there will always comes the point in a teenager’s life when they want nothing to do with their parents, that we have no way to possibly understand the drama of what they are going through.”
Noah shook his head. “Not our girls—they’re different. They’ll know how awesome we are.”
“Whatever helps you sleep at night.” Lexi patted his chest. “What should we do today?”
“I don’t know about you, but I am perfectly content to spend all day worshiping your body.”
“We did that yesterday.”
“No one says we can’t do that again today. Every single day we are here, I want you to know how much I love you.” Noah punctuated each word with a kiss along her body.
“I don’t know how much more I could take.” Her breathing became rapid.
Tracing the curves of her body with his tongue, he said, “I’m going to knock you up so you can’t get rid of me so easily.”
“Oh yeah?” Lexi taunted Noah, tugging him up, so they were face to face.
“Oh yeah.” He shifted his knee between her legs, spreading them and moving his weight on top of her.
Lexi’s eyebrow lifted, and she poked him in the chest, her nail tracing a line down the center of his perfectly divided abs. “Says the man with two adoring daughters at ho
me already.” Her hand reached down to cup him, squeezing his thick rod between her legs.
His hand covered hers, squeezing harder, the way he liked it.
“I’m feeling a little outnumbered. Maybe we can even things up?”
“I’m game if you are.”
Noah looked up to the ceiling, rolling his eyes. Playfully, the first line of the chorus to Etta James’ “At Last” was sung. Lexi joined him a cappella as he rolled them over on the bed. It seemed their time had come after all.
“You are so beautiful.” Noah’s hooded eyes watched her body become aglow with the setting sun behind her.
Moaning, she rotated her hips with him deep inside of her. His hands cupped her ass, pulling her closer to his groin, the warmth between them sultry.
Lexi arched her back. “Noah.”
Noah ground his hips against her, thrusting deep into her, his hands tight enough to leave marks on her hips. He hummed the next verse of the song. “Give me a minute, Lex. I’m praying to the baby-making gods we get this on the first shot.”
“Well, you are two for two. I’m not exactly worried about you getting it right.” Her tone was sarcastic, and she was grinning.
A light smack tapped her right side playfully.
“Such sarcasm from such a lucious mouth.” His palm rested on her stomach, his thumb trailing down to massage the sensitive spot between her legs.
“Play your cards right, Noah, and you’ll find my mouth quietly occupied later.”
He sat up and sucked one of her nipples into his mouth.
“And how I love that mouth of yours.” His hand moved over to show her other breast some attention.
“Oh God.”
“Not God, just a man.”
“My man.” Lexi framed Noah’s face with her hands and kissed him senseless. They moaned into each other’s mouths as their tongues danced around together.
Quickly, Noah slipped out of Lexi, and she immediately felt the loss of him deep inside of her as he ignored her dismayed cry. “I heard this was one of the best positions to make a baby.” He put a couple of pillows under her stomach and positioned himself between her legs from behind.
Lexi shuddered as he slowly slid into her.
“You mean we hadn’t tried them all before?” Lexi gasped and paused mid thrust only to have Noah grip her hips, forcing her over his shaft in swift strokes not meant to prolong their pleasure.
“I plan on keeping you here all weekend.”
“Just like this?”
“Exactly like this. I can’t risk my swimmers missing their mark.”
“Seriously, Noah?”
Noah slipped his hand underneath, playing with Lexi’s clit and rubbing the nub in slow circles as he pounded behind her.
“Careful, I might start singing open sesame to your cervix.”
“You’ve been reading Evie’s Cosmo magazines again, haven’t you?”
His fingers pressed harder, firmer, keeping his cock deep inside her. Lexi moaned, leaning further into the nest of pillows Noah had built for her as he thrust deep and faster.
“Less talk, more sexy-time wife.”
“I’m weak and swoony.” She mocked Noah, who only kept up the nearly punishing pace of the sex, changing his movements each time she got closer and closer to the precipice.
“You’re about to be filled with Noah juniors, my love.” Noah pumped steadily, letting her body catch the final wave.
“Oh! Fuck yes!”
“Lexi, now!” Noah fell to the side, taking her with him. Limbs tangled and bodies shifted until he laid her flat on her back, propped up by a mound of pillows under her hips. Bodies still convulsing, he managed to flip her over without pulling out.
“I love you,” she said, pulling him down for a kiss.
His cock still hard and pulsing, he moved her legs, keeping her reclined on the bed.
“I love you too.” He brushed back the hair from her face, hands drifting south again to tweak her stiff nipples. “I love every part of you,” he said, watching her eyes tear over as he cupped her breasts , tracing faint scars that showed how she’d won her battle with death years earlier.
“I can’t wait to meet our baby boy,” Lexi murmured, pulling Noah down by his neck for a lingering kiss.
His hands moved down her body and palmed her flat belly; small rolls and wrinkles from her previous pregnancies overshadowed her old wounds like tiger stripes.
“Feels good to be three for three.” Noah moved his hands back up to her breasts and massaged them, feeling the walls of her vagina clench him tighter, getting ready for another orgasm.
Lexi lifted her hips, slowly thrusting upward. “I bet it does, you cocky rocker.”
“You love me anyway.”
They smiled together, and she said, “That I do.”
Chapter One
Six months later…
“So tell me, how are you really?” Evie Maldono asked.
Rolling her eyes at her best friend, Lexi tried to keep her anger at bay. “I’m fine. I keep telling everybody I’m fine. Why won’t you guys listen to me?”
“I don’t know, maybe because I know you. There is absolutely no way that you’re just casually taking this all in stride.”
Lexi took a deep breath and slowly let it out. “No, you’re right, I am stressed out. You know what’s stressing me out? You guys are asking me every damn day, every damn hour, almost every damn minute just how the hell I am. It hasn’t changed, and if something does change you will most certainly be one of the first to know. Until then, my standard answer is ‘I am fine.’”
Evie held up a finger for Lexi to wait and dug into her purse, pulling out a notepad and pen. “Here, let me write this down. I want to make sure I don’t forget it.”
A giggle bubbled in Lexi’s chest, but she wasn’t about to give in that easy. “Go ahead and be a smartass, but you have two options: you can sit there and be my friend and stop asking me how I feel or you can leave.”
“So, ice cream? Chocolate?”
That time Lexi couldn’t stop the laugh that burst from her lips. “Yes, actually, ice cream sounds fantastic.”
“Great! I’ll be right back.” Evie rushed out of the room.
Relaxing back on her pillows, Lexi looked up at the ceiling, then out the window, then back to the shadows dancing on the ceiling. She was bored out of her mind and wondering how she was going to get through the next, at a minimum, six weeks. She’d be thirty-two weeks by then, and while that would still technically be a premature baby, the doctors were saying that would give her baby a fighting chance at surviving. Obviously, the longer he stayed in her womb, the better. The odds of her going forty weeks were minuscule.
Evie walked back into the room which a huge bowl of ice cream, both vanilla and chocolate.
Her best friend knew her well. “Damn, what makes you think I can eat all of that?” Lexi tried not to smile.
“Who says this is for you?”
“Because if it was for you it would be raspberry ice cream since that is your favorite.” Lexi tried to peek at what was in the bowl.
Grinning, Evie tilted the bowl so she could see and burst out laughing.
“I stand corrected. Are you going to share?”
“Of course.” Evie pulled two spoons out of her back pocket. “I come prepared.” She climbed into bed with Lexi and held out a spoon to her. “Dig in.”
The two friends ate in silence. After years of being there for each other, they knew what the other needed and knew the best way to make the other feel better.
“So, when is Dr. McHottie getting here?” Evie asked.
“What would Anthony say if he heard you?”
“Well, first he’d roll his eyes, then he’d say something sarcastic in that sexy British accent about how I was becoming one of the Troublesome Trio. To which I would reply, since one of them is my biological grandmother, I’ll take that as a compliment. Then he’d give me a look, I’d probably laugh and smack him on
the ass, then we’d fall into bed and make some hot, sweet monkey love.”
“That sounds about right—especially the part about you becoming more like the Trio.”
“Hey, there are worse things I could be than like one of them, in their seventies and running circles around people half their age. Besides, I’m trying to get you ready for when they visit. Your doctor is kind of sexy, and you know how they get around men. They’ll be coming up with ailments for him to examine them.”
“He’s a pediatric surgeon. Those ladies are far from pediatrics.”
“They’ll make some kind of comment about how they thought he said ‘geriatric’ surgeon.”
“True—they always find one way or another to turn things around to flirting.”
“Are we calling it flirting now?”
“It’s the mildest term I can come up with at the moment.”
“Then flirting it is.”
“When do you think they’re going to make a trip out here?” Lexi asked.
“I think they’re waiting until closer to when the baby comes. They’re going to have their bags packed so they can be out here in a moment’s notice. Plus, if they wait until after the baby comes, their roles as grandmothers can be played out.”
“They do love that role.”
“They excel at it. They can’t wait for another baby to spoil. Trust me, I hear from them all the time about when are Anthony and I going to get down to the business of baby-making.” Evie rolled her eyes. “Grams even pulled Anthony aside and gave him a lecture on what he needed to do to make sure his swimmers were as healthy as possible. That conversation took him days to get over. Poor guy.” She laughed. “But he knew what he was getting into when we got married. After all, Grams did knock him out with a frying pan the first time she met him.”
“I’m pretty sure the Trio has scared all of our men at some point or another. Remember the time Leigh burst into the bedroom when Noah and I were in there and proceeded to sit down and give us Kama Sutra instructions? Noah had to drive an hour, one way, to the closest store that was open in the middle of the night so he could buy new locking doorknobs for the bedroom.”
