“I don’t understand. Why are you doing this?”
With obvious patience, her husband said, “I am only flesh and blood, Melissa. I have needs too and, I’m sorry, but you don’t fulfill them.” At her shocked look, he nodded, “I know what you’re thinking. How does a man of God fall into this business?” He surprised her even more when he grinned and softly admitted, “A dream led me here.”
Melissa gaped at him before breathing, “Does Martha know?”
His look questioned her sanity as he murmured, “Of course not, my Dear.”
Robert glanced at Melissa’s father, motioning for him to speak. The elderly shareholder said, “I have arranged for Martha to travel. She will spread her good will through missionary work, which should suit her well and keep her nose out of everyone’s business. You and your preacher will inherit almost a billion dollars, Melissa.”
The room spun. She knew she was going to faint but could do nothing to stop it. The last thing Melissa heard were multiple voices calling her name before all consciousness faded. When she came around, Hank was peering down at her as he cupped her face in his hands. Her attention shifted to a looming face above Hank’s head.
Both of Robert’s eyebrows lifted as he asked, “Are you okay?”
He’s spoken to me more in this spectacular castle than he has in the last six months.
Blushing under Hank’s hands, she said in a barely audible voice, “Yes.”
Hank helped her sit up. Looking around, she didn’t see the elderly man claiming to be her father bit remembered almost a billion dollars, Melissa.
“Will you join me in this venture, Melissa?” Her gaze shot back to Robert’s. He held such a scheming gleam in his eye that she asked in a shaky voice, “What’s on your mind?”
“We will join Faith’s mother, Becca, and found the new Jeweled Serpent. Hank will be joining us, won’t you?”
As if the most natural thing, Hank grinned and nodded. A shiver rocked down Melissa’s spine as she tried to cope with the surreal atmosphere. Tilting his head, Robert raised his cup, “I think we need to toast before announcing our decision to relocate churches at the evening service, don’t you?”
With wide eyes, she nodded while taking the offered cup, “Will Hank attend the service?”
The preacher straightened his light jacket, curiously eyeing Hank, and thrust a hand out to shake, “Hank, it would be a pleasure for the entire family to attend but I know that Terri and Jacob have their own work to do. I would love to announce your departure as well tonight. Will you attend my service?”
Hank grasped Robert’s hand in his, nodding as he said, “Since this is my last stop before transferring, I think that can be arranged. Don’t embarrass me, though.”
Robert shocked her even further when he pulled her to him for a brief hug while saying to them both, “Welcome to the family, Melissa. You’ll be in fine hands with your new Dom, Hank, but watch him…he’s an Atheist.”
