“Spawn of the devil, you mean,” Patrick said, nuzzling her throat where it rose above the collar of her gown. “And to think that the poor fellow likes you.”

Victoria pulled away slightly to protest. “I like him too. I just don’t understand him, that’s all. There are too many questions about him—too many questions and very few answers. Do you think we will ever learn just what is contained in that infernal wooden box? Or why he has changed so much since his return from the war?”

“Maybe we wouldn’t like the answers,” Patrick suggested thoughtfully, a small frown creasing the skin between his eyebrows. “Besides,” he said, brightening, “I have already found all my answers—in you. Come here, my dearest wife, and tell me again: Who is your dearest, dearest love?”

“You are, of course.” Victoria sighed on a smile, before settling her lips on his and surrendering to his embrace.

A long, lovely time later Patrick whispered into her ear, “Any more questions, my darling Victoria?”

  His delighted wife only smiled.
