Mal blinked as if he hadn't even considered that as an issue. "Of course, Chris. Honestly, you should see if you can snag Aaron, too. He likes you."
I raised my eyebrows. "You know, you might be open minded about sharing me with other guys, but the thought of sharing you is making me see red."
Mal's grin widened. "You're the only exorcist for me, Chris. Trust me, you won't have to share my affections and I'm fine with sharing yours with Sabian and Aaron, if he decides to join us. They all bring something to our group, and to be honest, I would be very surprised if this mess with the demons is over with."
"So, surround myself with powerful men?"
"Just run them by me and Sabian first." Mal winked before pulling me back into a tight hug. "You are extremely badass, but if my gut feeling is correct, we are going to need all the help we can get. We're on the radar now, and I very much doubt we're going to be left alone. The stronger we are as a group, the better chance we'll have to be able to stand against forces no mortal, or vampire, should truly have to face."
I shivered at the seriousness in his voice. He was worried, and if he was, I probably should be, too. "Okay, mate. We'll stick together and build ourselves a nice roleplaying group in the process."
Mal sputtered. "That's not..."
I cut him off with laughter. "Side benefit, right?"
He sighed, then chuckled. "I suppose."
"All right, Mal. It's a plan. So, we've got a few hours before I should go check in at the restaurant. Care to entertain me for a while?"
Mal's lips curled up into a seductive smile.
I thought about making a joke, but before I could, he swept me off my feet and was striding toward my bedroom.
Whatever was coming, I wouldn't face it alone. I knew Mal, Sabian when I got him back, and Mayhem would never leave my side. And there was a chance I'd be able to add Aaron to that list of people I could truly trust with my life, my heart, and even my soul. And who knew, maybe, just maybe, there was a certain demon prince that I could add, as well. Time would tell.

Sweat drenched my T-shirt, making it cling uncomfortably. I was almost ready to pull my jeans off, even though I'd get a massive sunburn, and dig in just my shirt. I also regretted turning down Mal's offer to help.
Still, this was something I probably needed to do myself. Maybe I should have waited until sundown and a full moon?
Stop bitching, Price, you're the idiot who buried all your shit in a crate on the mountainside.
I went back to digging.
No one would disturb me up here. It was private property and remote enough that it wasn't common to even get random hikers.
Still, I paused when my shoulder blades itched like someone was watching me.
I shielded my eyes and looked around, though all I could see in the hazy desert heat was an equine form. Usually, the horseback riders rode earlier to avoid the heat and it didn't look like this horse had a rider.
Maybe it was lost?
I put my shovel down, climbed out of the hole I'd dug, and turned back toward the apparition. Wavy in the heat, much like I imagined a mirage would be, the horse lowered its head and pawed at the ground.
I took a step forward and it threw its head up, turned, and bolted. I assumed the flaming mane and tail affect was due to the heat and possible dehydration, but it was clear, if there was actually something there and not my mind playing tricks on me, that there was no way I was catching that horse.
Shrugging, I took a long drink of water from a jug I had nearby and went back to digging.
The metallic thunk of my shovel hitting one of the two chests I'd buried all of my occult tools and books in distracted me completely from what I'd seen.
Renewed enthusiasm fueled my limbs as I uncovered the last of the large crates. I'd pull them out with my car. They were heavy, though I could lift them into the back seat and trunk on my own.
I'd get everything back down to my place, get together with Mal, and see about getting Sabian back. Surprisingly, even Aaron was onboard with this plan. Then we'd have to start working toward preparing for whatever else was coming at us, because Mal was right. Something was coming. I could feel it down to my very core. And it wasn't going to be friendly.
