“Pa, Joey came here to get married. This has been her only offer.”

  Chapter FOURTEEN

The River Valley Inn had a few people in the dining room eating breakfast. Royce was sitting with one of the miners when Josephine walked in. He stood and waved her over. Thank you for coming. Josephine Jacobs, meet Chuck Nichols. “Ma’am,” Chuck said looking at Royce the whole time.

“Mr. Nichols,” Josephine replied. “How long have you worked for the Bainbridges?”

“Four years.” He still hadn’t looked at her.

“Where are you from? Have you ever been married? Were you a miner before you came here?” Josephine tried to get Chuck to talk with her but all she got were one word answers.

“I think you two will make a wonderful couple,” Royce said, a big smile plastered on his handsome face. “Now how soon would you be able to marry Chuck, Josephine?”

“She’s not going to marry him,” Amos said, standing in the doorway wearing a nightshirt to his knees and a pair of boots, “at least until I have my say.” Josephine hurried over to where Amos was standing. “Josie, what are you thinking? I thought you knew you were my girl?”

Tears sparkled on her lashes. “How would I have known that?”

“Awe, darlin’, sometimes men got nothing under their hats but hair. I’ve been alone a long time. You’d sure make me a happy man if you could find a little bit of fondness for me and agree to be my wife.”

Mindful of his condition, Josephine took his face in her hands and brought his lips down to meet hers. “Yes, Amos, I would be honored to become your wife.”

The people in the dining room started to hoot and holler, clapping for the touching display. “What’s happening here?” Jim came up behind Charlene who was wiping tears from her own eyes.

“Pa just asked Josephine to marry him and she said yes.”

“Guess I’d best get back to work, Mr. Brainbridge,” Chuck said, rising to his feet. He stopped in front of Josephine and Amos. Without looking at them, and in his same monotone voice, wished them luck before walking out the door.

Charlene couldn’t help but giggle when Jim leaned in and whispered in her ear, “I hope he can make it through the day with that broken heart he’ll be carrying around.”

Royce, the easy-going one of the brothers, stopped and shook Amos’s hand. “Congratulations, you two and best of luck.” When he saw Charlene, he stopped. “You know we have miners that are looking for young women such as yourself. I could set up…”

“Be on your way, Royce. She’s already spoken for.” Jim put his hat on Charlene’s head, making her turn and look questioningly at him.

“I am?” Her eyes sparkled with merriment.

Jim cupped his hands behind her back. “Don’t you know a man never lets a woman wear his hat unless he plans on taking her home?” His lips came down, drowning out her radiant smile.
