Eager to see more, Naturi spun around. The smile fell from her lips, and her eyes stretched wide. A gasp leaped out of her as she stumbled backward into the arms of her brother.
Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god… I can’t fuckin’ breathe!
“I got you, sis,” Jonie assured her, mirth in his voice. “Breathe, girl.”
The room fell silent.
Kneeled on one knee, Raven gazed up at her with a velvet box sitting on his palm. “I know you don’t like surprises, and being put on the spot isn’t one of your favorite things either, but for this, I just couldn’t help myself.”
“Oh Jesus,” she let out on a choked whisper. Tears formed and swiftly traveled down her face.
Is this happening? Is this really happening?
He became misty-eyed as he smiled at her. “Naturi Ross…” His words faded, his lips quivered. “Aw, man. I—I had this speech laid out in my head and it flew out of my mind, just now.”
More chuckles arose, adding a lightheartedness to an extremely tense moment.
“C’mon, Rave!” Zion encouraged him. “You already got her, bruh. All you gotta do is put a ring on it!”
Again, the crowd laughed.
Raven swallowed hard and nodded. “Naturi Ross, I love you so much I can’t put it into words. We’ve been through a lot and even during the most unfortunate times, we found our way to each other. I can’t see myself with anyone else, loving anyone else, because this heart of mine belongs to you. I want nothing more than see your smile every day of my life. I will do everything in my power to take care of you, to please you, to honor you, to be loyal to you...” He pulled the box open. A large translucent pink heart-shaped diamond sat in a crest, attached to a sparking platinum band that carried a ring of tiny pink diamonds. “If you can find it in your heart to become my wife…”
She broke out of her brother’s embrace, sunk to her knees and crawled over to the man who owned every bit of her heart.
Awws and ohhs followed her.
She wrapped her arms around him, crying uncontrollably.
“Oh sweetheart, you didn’t have to get on the floor with me,” Raven said, squeezing her tight.
There were so many things she wanted to say to him, so many feelings she wanted to share, but as their friends, family and coworkers milled around them, applauding and cheering, she could only manage to croak out, “Yes, yes, yes, all of the YES!”
He stood, taking her with him. She gazed into his loving eyes as he slid the ring onto her finger. Palming the sides of her face, he kissed her, deeply, passionately, even while there was a plethora of eyes on them.
“Alright, time for y’all to get a room!” Zion shouted.
“Sounds like a plan.” Raven scooped Naturi up into her arms.
Naturi found herself cradled against him, being carried out of the ballroom. “Are we seriously leaving the party to go have sex.”
“Hell yeah,” he replied without missing a beat. “Carry on! See you nerds on Monday!”
She couldn’t even feel an ounce of embarrassment. Why? Because throughout all of the tears, anger, confusion, and downright lust, they came out the other end, stronger, united, more than prepared for the next step in their relationship.
Nothing could put out the flame in her heart, because she was about to spend the rest life with the man of her dreams. “I love you, Raven Chan.”
He smiled down at her and winked. “I know you do.”
