“I didn’t mean it like that. I meant that maybe I’m the one who needs saving. Maybe I need you to save me.”
Her body softens and I picture a ghost of a smile flickering around her lips. I hope she’s smiling at me. “You need saving? Big strong Everett Porter needs a rescue team?”
“Maybe. The more I run, the more tired I feel. Spending time with you made me, for the first time ever, want more. I wish I didn’t feel like this, but I do. I wish I could just walk away, but I don’t want to.”
“I really like you Everett, but I lose all sense of reality around you. You make me believe that everything will be okay, that rainbows and unicorns will appear overnight and take away every worry I have. Then I go home and it’s back to reality. And my reality is hard most days. I need to focus on Jack and me and work out how our future looks.”
“Why does reality have to be so hard. Why can’t we make it easier together?”
“Because it won’t be easier. You asked me to marry you and we’ve only known each other a week!” her voice rises to a squeak at the end of her sentence.
“We’ve known each other since high school.” I try the words I already know won’t work.
“Don’t bullshit. I really don’t have the stomach for it. You know what I mean.”
Her fingers slide back around my neck and settle in my hair. “I don’t want you to walk away, by the way.
“So, wanna get married, then?” I hold in my snort of laughter as she stiffens again.
Her voice is strained. “Please tell me you’re joking.”
I let out my laugh and squeeze her tight. “Yes, I’m joking. Not forever. But for now, I am.”
“You’re lucky. I don’t know what I would do if you were serious this time.” She kisses me and I slide my hand up behind her head. I hold her there, reacquainting myself with her taste. A tiny moan escapes her lips, and she presses against me.
I track kisses across her neck and her head tips back as I speak against her skin. “I feel lucky, I admit it.”
“Your luck started the day you rescued Tommo and didn’t do any serious damage to your hands.”
“And it has continued right up to this moment.”
She laughs and wraps her arms around me, squeezing me tight in a hug. We start to kiss again and then a loud knocking shatters the silence. We giggle when someone calls out, “Hey! Who’s locked the door?”
“Just a minute.” Jill shouts, then she drops her voice and groans into my chest. “I really did plan to ravish you in here. Do you think we’re ever going to make this happen?”
“I guarantee it. In fact, I’ll book that same hotel suite on our way out of here and we’ll go straight there. All phones will be off, and no one will disturb us until we’ve had our fill of each other. I’m going to need quite a while.”
“I’m in. I need to buy lotto online later tonight, don’t let me forget. All I need is a big fat lotto win and my life will be complete.”
The pounding on the door sounds again but I take one last moment to slide my hands across Jill’s cheeks and hold her close to me in the dark. I rest my forehead against hers, aware that now is not the time to share my secret. “You have won the lotto, my naughty Nurse Harmer. You just don’t know it yet.”
