I couldn’t tell what it was they were shooting at the Titans, but Kota and his men appeared to be dodging the bullets with ease. Kota and his warriors didn’t even take up the full ten minutes. The battle was over before it could really get going.

Kota’s men didn’t seem to even be injured as they proceeded to clean up the beach by burning the boats and bodies of the pirates. I noticed Kota crouching over one of his men who was clutching his leg. Kota helped the guy to his good leg and jumped up to the cliff with him. I hurried down the balcony steps and followed Kota a ways around the path until we came to a circular courtyard.

“Alert the healer, he needs to stich up Xan’s wound.” Kota called the order at a little woman who came hurrying out of the house. She was dressed in a demure white gown and her hair was pulled back into a bun. She couldn’t be a day over sixty—maybe she was a nurse!

I glanced around the half enclosed courtyard. The hallway inside was enclosed by glass so I could see when the nurse came back with a small kit in hand.

“My lord the healer has been called away to help in the north quarter. I can tend to his stitching.” I perked up when I heard this and stepped forward towards the nurse.

“Hi, I’m Vanessa. I can help you if you need it. I’m a nurse too…or I was when I lived on Earth,” I amended quickly before pushing up the sleeves of Kota’s robe.

“Kota has wed a nurse from the planet Earth?” She seemed perplexed by this. I wondered if Titus had the equivalent to its elite circles that intermarried strictly with other elite. I glanced back at Kota who was completely distracted by his men on the beach.

“Take care of Xan Bertha. I will return shortly.” Kota didn’t even look in my direction. I guess he hadn’t noticed me there.

I shrugged and scooted over to Xan who looked a bit light headed. He was lying down on the ground and his leg was bleeding pretty badly. Bertha put a pillow under Xan’s head and pushed a small white tablet into his mouth before helping him to drink some milky liquid, it reminded me of Carnation Milk.

“Well, I could use your help lady Vanessa if you would not mind. Titan anatomy is largely similar to human anatomy. Just bigger when it comes to our males. The true differences come from bone density and the brain. All the other organs and systems are fundamentally the same.”

“Okay, so how do you want to do it then? I’ll clean it out and you stitch?” Bertha nodded, she smiled at me almost tentatively.

“Yes that was just going to be my suggestion. We’ll have to move quickly, Titans don’t take well to transfusions.” I nodded and got to work cleaning out the nasty wound, I found two bullets lodged into his thigh, one was keeping a tear from rupturing on his femoral artery.

I had to give Xan kudos for not even flinching the entire time we worked on him. I was sure Bertha gave him painkillers, but it couldn’t be that strong since he was still conscious.

“Alright Lady Vanessa, when I tell you to remove the second bullet, I will quickly suture the vein.” Bertha told me when to remove the bullet and I marveled at how she could see past the flow of blood that followed.

She expertly closed the vein and manually suctioned away the blood with something that looked like a baster before she closed up his leg. Bertha couldn’t simply be a nurse. Not even the most skilled trauma nurses could stitch up a wound like that without constant suction.

“All done Xan, you were lucky we had lady Vanessa here to help. You might have bled out if not for her.” Bertha’s tone was surprisingly full of motherly pride and I warmed to her almost instantly.

I cleaned Xan’s leg and then wrapped it up for him. Poor thing looked so pale, it really didn’t go well with his silver blonde hair and super light blue eyes. He looked like a ghost, though he had the facial structure any model or actor would kill for.

Honestly, I think it ran in Titan blood to be attractive. Even Bertha in her simple white dress seemed like she was a knockout in her younger days. Her striking big blue eyes were still bright with intelligence and good humor. She had laugh lines around her eyes and mouth, but otherwise her skin was smooth and her face a perfect heart shape.

“You both are angels. Thank you for patching up a careless warrior. I saw that fool pirate pull his weapon, I just miscalculated when he’d fire.” That pill and drink Bertha gave Xan was still working, he sounded like he was on cloud nine.

“Don’t beat yourself up about it Xan, mistakes happen…but just be careful they don’t happen on the battlefield. It is your life that depends on it.” I patted Xan’s shoulder and he smiled goofily at me.

“Lord General must thank Fate all the time that he got to have you as a soul mate my lady.” Vanessa couldn’t help but giggle at his slurred words. Poor Xan was high as a kite.

“Well now, the only issue we’ll have is getting him inside to an infirmary bed. My lady would you mind terribly if you sat with Xan while I go and fetch a couple of his fellow warriors to help?”

I told Bertha I’d be happy to look after Xan and she hurried out of the courtyard and to the path that would lead her to the beach. I wondered if she had super jumping skills as well.

“Do you find it terribly disconcerting to be on Titus, Lady Vanessa?” Xan was looking at me with surprising clarity now and I wondered if the drugs were wearing off.

“Not really. I just find my new...role as Kota’s wife to be a little harder to take.” Xan chuckled as his eyes closed.

“Your way of speech is odd.” I shrugged to myself and sat silently while waiting for Bertha to get back. I thought that maybe Xan had drifted off.

“You know the next tier of generals will be allowed to find human wives. I get nervous when I think about having to steal a woman away from her life and family…but I feel the pull of my soul mate and I know that once I see her, I will bring her to Titus.”

I gave Xan an odd look. This soul mate thing was a real concept for the Titans. I wondered if it was another name for the ‘force,’ or lust that Kota made it seem like when he was arguing with me earlier.

“Your soul mate…you can sense she’s out there even now?” Xan opened his eyes and smiled at me, his expression almost dreamy. He was a complete opposite from Kota and I wondered briefly if it was the drugs. I’d have to slip Kota some if that was the case.

“Yes, I can sense her even more so that we’ll be united soon. I just hope that once she is here she could grow to accept me and her new home.” I almost snorted in disbelief.

Here Xan was—a sweet normal guy pretty much, already wanting to make his soon to be wife happy, then there was Kota. A stubborn, domineering, arrogant dork that just wanted to get me into bed. Go figure, he just had to be the one ‘Fate’ picked out for me.

  Chapter Four

  Kota

Bertha came hurrying down the beach towards Kota and two of his men who were nearby watching the piles of pirate rubbish burn. Kota couldn’t help but grow a tinge alarmed at the possibility that Xan lost too much blood and passed on.

“What is it Bertha? Is everything alright with Xan?” Kota asked her hurriedly. The two warriors nearby stepped closer to Bertha to hear what she had to say as well.

“Yes, Lady Vanessa and I managed to stitch his wound and remove the bullets from his leg, with minimal blood lost. Though he is weakened from the blood he did lose. I just need help moving him into the infirmary now. Lady Vanessa sits with him in the east courtyard as we speak.”

Vanessa? How did she end up aiding Bertha with healing Xan? Kota thought he had left her on the balcony.

“We will help move him Bertha, lead the way.” Kota’s men followed after Bertha and Kota simply ran ahead of them to witness for himself if it was truly Vanessa that acted as nursemaid to Xan.

Kota reached the infirmary wing and saw Vanessa speaking softly with Xan. She was even smiling at him and laughing at whatever he was whispering to her.

That crippled fool, how did he get Vanessa to smile when all Kota could do was argue with her? Kota walked over to the pair a
nd Vanessa looked up at him with a startled expression.

“Oh, I didn’t hear you coming…” She trailed off when she saw Kota’s barely restrained anger. He was angry because she made him feel jealous of Xan, the fool couldn’t even keep up in battle. How come Vanessa only smiled and laughed with him? She should be behaving that way with Kota alone.

Kota’s eyes widened when he realized all she wore was that thin nightgown. It barely covered her up and she had to take off Kota’s robe so she could patch Xan’s wounds!

Bertha arrived with the other two men and Kota gestured to Vanessa so they could go. Kota would take care of this once and for all; he just needed to mate with her so she could see that they were soul mates. That the force between them was too strong to ignore any longer.

Vanessa said a quiet goodbye to both Bertha and Xan before she pulled Kota’s robe around her shoulders and followed after him as he stalked down the path that would lead them to his bedroom.

“I hope you don’t mind that I helped Bertha tonight. I was thinking that maybe I could help her in the infirmary too. I was a nurse back on Earth and I’d like to continue working as one…Kota?” Vanessa was trying to catch up with him as he strode towards their balcony steps.

“You want to continue assisting Bertha so you can nursemaid over Xan?”

Vanessa seemed truly bemused that Kota would make the insinuation. What else was he to think? She seemed to hate Kota, yet she was all smiles and laughter with Xan.

Kota pushed open the glass panel leading inside and Vanessa stepped in ahead of him. Vanessa was his and it was time he made sure of it by consummating their marriage.

As soon as he stepped into the bedroom after Vanessa, Kota gripped her waist and turned her around to face him. He lifted her to the chaise within the gasp of a breath and pressed her soft body down onto the cushion.

“Kota, what are you doing?” Vanessa sounded alarmed, but Kota dismissed it.

She’ll soon find pleasure in this. Kota gripped her waist before caressing his hands down along her supple curves. He buried his face in the crook of her neck to inhale her scent, but took pause when he realized she smelled like Xan. Kota growled and ripped the damn clothing from Vanessa’s body.

“Kota stop it!” She gasped when his hands met her smooth skin. Kota loved the feel of her hips in his hands and her scent unhindered was intoxicating.

Vanessa cried out in pain and the sound cut through Kota’s fog of need. He was holding her too tightly. He let her go as if she branded him and Vanessa scrambled away from him.

She picked up the chaise’s decorative blanket and held it over her nakedness. Vanessa’s eyes were wide and frightened; Kota did not want to frighten her. He didn’t want to see the wary look in her eyes.

He wanted her to want him, like that brief moment when she first glimpsed him from across that coffee shop. Kota realized he truly had to earn her affections and her trust.

“Kota I—I don’t know how I know this…but that wasn’t you. You aren’t some giant brute whose mindset doesn’t exceed his base needs. Look, I can try to get used to being here, but you have to take it easy with me, okay?”

Kota was briefly stunned by her strength. He forced himself onto her and still she stood before him, no tears, speaking calmly as if he was the fragile one.

“I’m sorry Vanessa. I hope you can come to forgive me for what I did. I promise to…take it easy from now on.” Kota used Vanessa’s vernacular and she amazed him even more by smiling. It was a small, shy smile, but she smiled at him.

Kota started to wonder if he even deserved Vanessa, especially after the way he just acted. “I will let you rest now…the closet has plenty clothing for you if you have need of it.” Kota stood and walked quickly from the room.

He needed to recoup his emotions if he were to truly ‘take it easy’ with Vanessa. She riled him up too much. She challenged him and called to some deeper part of him he hadn’t known was there. Kota was certainly not used to that from a female.

Kota stopped by his old room to change into loose pants and nothing else. It was what he usually wore around the house in the late hours. He left his room to head down to the kitchen in their private wing of the house. Kota rarely slept and had the nightly routine of making himself a snack around this time and catching up on work he might not have gotten to during the day.

During his brief stints on Earth, Kota tried what the humans called a sandwich. He found the idea of putting meats and cheeses in between buttery bread quite pleasing so he adopted the idea.

Kota made himself a braised lamb sandwich with what was left over from dinner. He needed to go and make a report of the battle that took place. He was able to deduce from a dying pirate that they wanted to instigate a war between Titus and Zathura.

War was devastating in its aftermath, but immensely profitable for pirates who picked off the pieces in a war’s duration. They stole anything of value going in between ally planets and instigated battle after battle.

Come morning Kota would have to travel to the High Council and reassure them it was an isolated event. There had been no movements from Zathura for quite some time now and in Kota’s patrols of the galaxy, he saw no suspicious activity.

Kota bit into his sandwich and he wondered if Vanessa liked sandwiches. He observed that she always ate greens and meats, but little starch on Earth. It wasn’t as if she needed to go on a slimming diet, Vanessa was perfect as far as Kota had seen.

He sighed and shook his head at himself; if his mother were alive she would have disowned him for what he almost did to Vanessa, even for what he did do. Kota took another bite of his sandwich as he pondered over how he could truly make things right with Vanessa.

  Vanessa

I woke up in Kota’s giant bed alone. I couldn’t say I wasn’t relieved that he was giving me space. After last night’s excitement, I thought I could use a very long vacation from him.

I sat up just as Kota walked into the room to see the blankets fall away from my decidedly naked torso. I closed my eyes briefly while pulling up the blankets, wonderful way to start out the day.

“Good morning Vanessa…” Kota was watching me intently and he came to a stop at the foot of the bed. He was wearing a different set of robing and pants today. The green and gold of his robe matched his eyes, making his gaze stand out that much more.

“Morning…” I trailed off awkwardly. I was painfully aware of Kota’s intense gaze; I could almost feel the heat of it caressing my skin. Did he have to be so damn sexy?

“Did you sleep well?” I looked at him carefully. Kota was actually being polite and not jumping on the bed to ravish me or anything like that.

“Um…yeah I did. Did you?” I tried to ignore the fact that I was naked and the fact that Kota knew I was naked and clearly restraining himself from whatever he wanted to do.

“I do not require sleep as much. Would you like to have breakfast with me?” I wondered briefly if he was asking me on a date. Then again maybe he was probably just being polite because there was only one dining room table and we’d both have to sit there and eat.

“Sure, I just have to…get ready.” I was about to tell him I needed to have a shower, but I didn’t want to give him any more visual than what he already had from just a few moments ago.

“Good, I thought we could eat in the garden and afterwards I can take you to see the capital city of Elyria.” So it was a date. Well I did tell him I would try to work things out, so if he’s making the effort so should I.

“That sounds intriguing. What’s in Elyria?” I was genuinely curious about all things Titus.

“It is where King Cronus lives and where various governing councils meet. I have a High General meeting I must attend later.” Kota was a real big shot here in Titus. It was cool and a little overwhelming to think about.

“Oh, okay then. Well I’ll hurry and freshen up.” Kota nodded once and turned around to walk from the room.

Once I was sure he was gone, I got
up and ran into the bathroom. The place was huge. There was a stand in shower in the corner, next to the giant freestanding tub. Across from which there was a large vanity with double sinks and an attached makeup counter. There was a door leading into the closet and another for the toilet room.

I hurried to the shower and changed into something that vaguely resembled clothes I would wear on earth. Skin colored tights under a lilac and cream-colored sweater dress. I found a cute pair of heels to match and hoped I was in keeping with the season here on Titus.

It was chilly last night. I walked through the bedroom and yelped in surprise when I saw Kota waiting in the library. He was reading a book on the couch, but I hadn’t expected him to be in the room at all.

“I apologize for startling you…you look beautiful Vanessa.” Kota closed his book and stood before bending down to kiss me softly on the cheek.

“I hope it’s…appropriate?” Kota nodded while he laced his fingers with mine. I wouldn’t have pegged Kota to be a hand holder, but he’d done it a few times now.

“All of the clothes in our closet are updated per the current season and fashion.”

Huh…well when you governed over your own country and served as a High General in the planet’s army, I guess you could afford a fashion expert to update your closet.

“Okay then, shall we go for breakfast?” I smiled up at Kota and the corner of his mouth twitched in return. Honestly, this Titan needed to loosen up. Kota led the way through the estate and I got to see just how giant it was.

There were three wings of the house and we had our own. One was a sort of base for Kota’s and his generals to convene. That’s where the infirmary was just in case the beach was stormed, like last night. I saw Bertha again and Kota didn’t freak out when I checked on Xan. The third wing of Kota’s house was like the combination of a throne room, a few meeting areas, ballrooms, and guest suites.
