He taps the side of my thigh. “Get that bubble butt out the car and I’ll grab Livie.”
Twenty-Four
OUR FAMILY
Cain
I let out a hearty laugh as Selena climbs out of the car, knocking the horn twice more on her way out. “Shh… it’s all right, Livie. It’s only Mummy and her big bubble butt,” I call back to Olivia in her car seat.
Selena swats at my arm. “I swear, Cain, if you refer to my butt as a bubble butt one more time I won’t be held accountable for my actions.”
Holding my hands up, I give in. She shakes her head—clearly not believing my offer one iota—before walking off into the field where a few years ago we’d scattered her father and brother’s ashes.
After getting out the car, I open the back and unhook Olivia from the car seat. Turning to face the field, I watch Selena, her head thrown back as she looks up to the sky, her blonde waves hanging loose as her mint green dress flutters between the flowers in the wind.
I tilt Olivia in my arms so she’s looking in Selena’s direction. “You see that beautiful goddess, Livie? She’s your mummy. And my mate. I think that makes us both the luckiest people on the planet.”
I walk through the field and come to a stop beside Selena, slipping my free arm around her waist. “Have you told them why we’re here?”
She looks down from the sky, and I catch sight of the blush crossing her cheeks before she drops her eyes to her feet. “I must look like an idiot.”
“Far from it, beautiful. In fact, we were just saying how you looked like a goddess. Isn’t that right, Livie?” I glance at Olivia for confirmation and get a smile in return, which I take as a win. “See? She just agreed,” I say, nudging Selena in the side.
Selena chuckles. “I’m pretty sure that was wind, but I’ll believe you.” She presses a kiss to my shoulder, and I kiss her on the top of the head before offering Olivia over to her. She takes her without question, and I slip my keys into my back pocket before taking another item out of my front pocket.
I drop to one knee at her feet.
She gasps and lifts a hand to her mouth.
Taking a deep, calming breath, I swallow the panic running through me at the thought of her possibly rejecting me. “Selena. I knew you were my mate from the first time I laid eyes on you. We’ve had some obstacles in our way but we finally found our way back to each other.” Having seemingly forgotten how to breathe and talk, I take a quick breath. “Even though we’re officially mated, for my wolf and the pack to be happy, I’d like to make things right for you and Olivia. Selena, will you marry me?” I hold out the ring I’d picked a few days ago, the one I’ve been dying to see on her finger.
Selena drops to her knees before me. If I wasn’t so concerned about her answer, I would probably be worried about the mess her dress will be in. “Of course I’ll marry you…. Oh, Cain.” She presses her soft lips against mine in a quick kiss before pulling back and looking at me with wide eyes surrounded by wet lashes. “You didn’t have to do this, you know? I was perfectly happy being mated, without the ceremony.”
“Maybe I'm selfish, but I want to stand in front of everyone and make us a family. My family.”
“Our family,” Selena corrects me before I sink my hands in to her hair and kiss her senseless, while being careful not to crush Olivia between the two of us. I’m filled with euphoria in the perfectness of the moment. I can imagine us coming here for years to come—chasing Olivia between the sunflowers while Selena cradles another child of ours in her arms.
We may have hurdles to face in our future, but I know together we can get through anything that comes to try us.
The End.
