LAURA BANNON (1895–1963) grew up in a family of eight in Grand Traverse Bay, Michigan. After putting herself through two years at Western Michigan State College and four years at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago, she began a career as an exhibiting artist and instructor. But she quickly discovered she was more passionate about the work she’d been doing in her spare time—illustrating children’s books. She began writing and illustrating her own books—more than twenty in all—which received numerous awards and were frequent Junior Literary Guild selections. In 1962 she won the Children’s Reading Round Table Award for her contribution to children’s literature.
