  ① 어떤 음악 좋아해요?

  어떤 is ‘what kind of’ and 음악 is ‘music’. So 어떤 음악 좋아해요? is ‘What kind of music do you like?’.

  ② 저도 모차르트 음악 좋아해요.

  저 is ‘I’ and –도 is ‘also / too’. So 저도 모차르트 음악 좋아해요 means ‘I like Mozart’s music, too’.

  ③ 저도 콘서트에 가고 싶어요.

  –고 싶어요 is ‘I want to ~’. So 저도 콘서트에 가고 싶어요 means ‘I want to go to a concert, too’.

  ④ 어느 가수 좋아해요?

  어느 is ‘which’ and 가수 is ‘singer’. So 어느 가수 좋아해요? means ‘Which singer do you like?’.

  ⑤ 그렇군요![그러쿤뇨]

  그렇군요 comes from 그렇(다) + 군요. Here 그렇다 is ‘to be like that’ and –군요 is an exclamation ending. So 그렇군요 is ‘That’s like that!’. It means ‘Now I see it’. We often use this when we want to respond positively to the speaker’s comment. This is a kind of verbal affirmation, so speakers will feel good when they hear 그렇군요 in response to what they have said.

  Grammar

  ● 어떤 + noun : what kind of

  When we want to know more specific information, we use 어떤 before the noun. It functions like ‘what kind of’ or ‘which’ in English.

  •어떤 영화 좋아해요? What kind of movie do you like?

  •어떤 음식 좋아해요? What kind of food do you like?

  •어떤 음악 좋아해요? What kind of music do you like?

  ● noun + 도 : also / too

  –도 is a marker, it means ‘also / too’. It can replace or be replaced by subject or object markers. It is also added after the place markers –에 and –에서.

  •히로가 한국어를 공부해요.

  마리도 한국어를 공부해요. Hiro studies Korean.

  Marie studies Korean, too.

  •바트가 한국어를 공부해요.

  바트가 프랑스어도 공부해요. Baht studies Korean.

  Baht studies French, too.

  •학교에 가요.

  도서관에도 가요. I go to school.

  I go to the library, too.

  •학교에서 공부해요.

  집에서도 공부해요. I study at school.

  I study at home, too.

  공주 비빔밥 주세요. Give me bibimbap.

  ● verb stem + 고 싶다 : want to~

  –고 싶다 indicates a wish or hope. We use –고 싶다 after the verb stem.

  •커피 마시고 싶어요. I want to drink coffee.

  •어디에 가고 싶어요? Where do you want to go?

  •뭐 하고 싶어요? What do you want to do?

  ● 어느 + noun : which

  어느 is ‘which’ when seen before the noun. We use 어느 when making a selection among a set of choices.

  •어느 영화 볼까요? Which movie shall we watch?

  (While looking at music albums)

  •어느 가수 좋아해요? Which singer do you like?

  (While looking at cafes on the street)

  •어느 카페에 갈까요? Which cafe shall we go to?

  피에르 우와, they really have a lot of fans. 한국 팬 seem to be very passionate.

  유 나 한국 팬 take part in various activities to support the stars they like.

  The fans of idol stars are especially enthusiastic. Some even follow the star’s schedule.

  And each fan club has its colors. 동방신기’s is pearl red, 슈퍼주니어’s is pearl sapphire blue, 신화’s is orange, and 소녀시대’s is pastel rose. So just by seeing the color of a balloon or glow stick that someone is holding, we can tell whose fan he / she is.

  피에르 재미있어요. But fan culture sometimes seems a little bit aggressive.

  유 나 맞아요. There has been some criticism. So lately fan clubs have been doing good work like offering rice to the needy or making donations to charitable causes.

  못 is ‘can’t’. So 오늘 노래방에 못 가요 means ‘I can’t go to karaoke today’.

  ② 공부해야 돼요.

  –아/–어/–여야 돼요 means ‘I have to ~’. So 공부해야 돼요 means ‘I have to study’.

  ③ 그럼 열심히 공부하세요.

  –(으)세요 means ‘please ~’. So 열심히 공부하세요 means ‘Please study hard’.

  ④ 배 아파요?

  배 is ‘stomach’ and 아파요 is ‘sick’. So 배 아파요? means ‘Do you have a stomachache?’.

  ⑤ 두 시까지 내야 돼요.

  –까지 is ‘untill / by’ and 내다 is ‘hand in’. So 두 시까지 내야 돼요 means ‘I have to hand it in by two o’clock’.

  ⑥ 그럼, 다음에 해요.

  그럼 is ‘if then’ and 다음 is ‘later / next’. So 그럼 다음에 해요 means ‘Then let’s do it later’.

  ⑦ 이것을 소포로 보내고 싶어요.

  소포 is ‘package / parcel’, 소포로 is ‘by parcel post’ and 보내다 is ‘send’. So 이것을 소포로 보내고 싶어요 means ‘I want to send this by parcel post’.

  ⑧ 그럼, 포장을 더 해야 돼요.

  포장 is ‘wrapping / packing’ and 더 is ‘more’. So 포장을 더 해야 돼요 means ‘You have to wrap it better’.

  Grammar

  ● 못 + verb : can’t~

  못 indicates inability or impossibility, and is similar to ‘can not’ in English. We use this before verbs. But for noun + 하다 combination verbs, we place it between the noun and 하다. There is a space between 못 and 하다. And to indicate simple inability, we use 못해요 without a space.

  •김치 못 먹어요[몬머거요]. I can’t eat Kimchi.

  •지금 데이트 못 해요[모태요]. I can’t go on a date now.

  •한국말 못해요[모태요]. I can’t speak Korean.

  ● verb stem + 아 / 어 / 여야 돼요

  verb stem + 아 / 어 / 여야 해요 : must / have to~

  It indicates obligation or necessity, similar to ‘must / have to’ in English. There is no difference in meaning between 돼요 and 해요.

  •지금 가야 돼요. I have to go now.

  •약 먹어야 돼요. I have to take medicine.

  •운동해야 돼요. I have to exercise.

  ● verb stem + (으)세요 : Please, ~

  We use –(으)세요, when we make a request or give an order politely. When the final syllable of the stem ends in a consonant we use –으세요, and when it ends in a vowel we use –세요.

  •열심히 공부하세요. Please study hard.

  •전화하세요. Please call.

  •책을 읽으세요. Please read books.

  •커피 드세요. Please drink coffee.

  드세요

  드세요 is ‘please eat or drink’. This is a polite form. We use 드세요 when we have prepared food and want to politely ask others to try it.
