She wipes her eyes and squeezes my hand. “Okay, enough of this mushy crap. Let’s get back to your fiancé before Granny turns him to the dark side.”
Well, she wasn’t far off on that note. We enter the bar to find a large crowd gathered around them while Granny is doing tequila shots off some gorgeously tanned man’s body. Hunter and my eyes connect, he points at her and laughs. I sidle up beside him sliding my arm around his waist. “Come on, I have my own man to do shots off of. Let my mom worry about Granny.” I turn, wink at my mom and we head up to our room.
***
The four of us meet for lunch the next day and find Granny hiding behind a dark pair of sunglasses, gingerly sipping her coffee. I hope she won’t vomit during the ceremony. After lunch, we go to our rooms to get ready before making our way to the golf cart taking us to Sunset Cove.
The venue is perfect, no chairs are needed, but I opt at the last minute to have a couple placed nearby in case someone– my hungover Granny namely –needs somewhere to sit.
Mom and Granny had chosen a non-denominational LGBTQ friendly minister and told her we wrote our own vows. Since this is low key, Hunter and I walk up the tiki-torch lined pathway hand in hand. He looks so handsome in his cream-colored linen pant suit with the bottoms rolled up and his bare feet leisurely strolling through the sand. His hair gently blows in the warm, fall ocean breeze. The matching fuchsia plumeria and orchid leis lying against our white cotton tees perfectly accentuate our matching outfits.
Granny stands up for Hunter and my mom for me as we exchange our most heart-felt thoughts to one another.
Hunter begins, “My Elliott, I’ve been battered and bruised goods for so long, broken with no sense of hope, and I didn’t think I could ever be fixed. But you believed in me, even when I didn’t know how to believe in myself. You had so much patience and faith, and slowly took all the broken and misplaced pieces and put them back together. For that, I love you. You complete me and own my heart from now until the day I die. You’re stuck with me now, baby.”
I smile at Hunter. “I was lost, battered, bruised and broken when you came to me. I thought I was beyond repair and yet, you found a way to put me back together. I’m forever yours, heart, mind, body and soul. I love you, Hunter.”
“Do you, Hunter, take Elliott to be your lawful wedded husband? To have and to hold from this day forward until death do you part?” the minister recites.
“I do,” Hunter replies, sliding my ring back on my finger, fighting back the tears
“Do you, Elliott, take Hunter to be your lawful wedded husband? To have and to hold from this day forward until death do you part?” She looks to me.
“I do,” I say, sliding Hunter’s ring on and rubbing my finger over it. The circle that never ends.
“By the power vested in me, by the great state of Hawaii, I now pronounce you Husband and Husband. You may now kiss your husband.”
Hunter reaches over, wiping the tears from my eyes. “I love you, Elliott,” he says.
And then, my husband covers my mouth with his, sharing our first kiss as married men.
There’s nothing that love and determination can’t conquer,
if you follow it through to find why it was worth the fight.
Perseverance!
Never give up!
