Dr. Zee followed Alex to the living room where AJ rose to greet the visitor. Alex bade them a good bye wishing the two to have a good visit. His tone and demeanor as if he was completely oblivious to what really was going on.

AJ remained standing motioning Dr. Zee to have a seat when Dr. Zee asked, "Are we alone Dr. Jones?"

"Yes, we are. I expect you want to check for yourself, so feel free to wander around and look where you want. I'll remain here if you don't mind. At my age the fewer steps the better."

Dr. Zee went to each room while AJ sat down and waited patiently for him to return.

Dr. Zee was quite sure they were alone, but he wanted to make sure. He'd noted the back stair way for his exit. AJ heard him moving around and realized he was in the kitchen. It was only a few minutes and Dr. Zee was back sitting down in an arm chair facing AJ.

Both then appraised one another. AJ saw a clear eyed man with the tic sitting back straight in the chair. AJ said, to get the conversation moving. "I told you I could help you Dr. Zee. But before I tell you how and by what methods I'll use, please tell me from the beginning your story. Let me get us started in the right direction. Something very traumatic happened to you when you were younger. That event, coupled with your physical anomaly, has led us to where we are today. Remember Dr. Zee I'm here to help not accuse."

Dr. Zee never moved an inch, nor blinked, nor said a word for a full two minutes. David's hands were sweating. Dryness in his throat made him wish he'd brought some water.

Dr. Zee cleared his throat and said, "You think you know it all Dr. Jones. I realize you're almost twice my age, but that doesn't mean I'm not without some experience and knowledge."

"I certainly am not entertaining the idea you are not without substance Dr. Zee. But would it shock you to hear that I know you came here to kill me. Let's put our cards on the table. I'm over eight five. Dying is not something I'm scared of happening. Now, start at the beginning. Let's get at the crux of things Dr. Zee," AJ said rather vociferous. He saw Dr. Zee flinch a bit with that last conversation.

"I know what you want Dr. Jones. You want to go out of life with the knowledge of what I am and what led me to do the things I dearly love doing. Yes, I will tell you everything. I want us to banter back and forth until I'm satisfied with the results. Then I'm going to kill you Dr. Jones."

"Fair enough Dr. Zee. Now go back to your first remembrance of someone making fun of your large penis."

"Well, you seem to know more than I thought Dr. Jones. I'll not ask you how, but let's begin with me saying that I was around six years old when it became evident that I was becoming well endowed. At first my mother thought it funny I had such a big penis. She showed me off to her friends. Then after my introduction to PE class at age thirteen, my teacher, after he saw my unit, said I was excused for life. In the restrooms, I saw what normal kids had for dicks. I had to use the toilet so as no one could see me. It really didn't get bad until high school. I was a nerd. No matter how I dressed or what pants I wore, my dick would leave an outline. It wasn't long before both boys and girls would snicker and point at my crotch. Consequently I spent a lot of time in the library after school waiting for all the kids to go home or play sports."

One night I'm walking home when a girl from school catches up with me. She's known as a loose girl, but I thought she was nice. To make a long story short, she and I found a quiet spot behind some bushes. She undid my pants and of course I was getting very hard, when she screamed seeing my dick even in the twilight of the evening. I was the talk of the school the next day. My mother transferred me out of there, thank God."

By now AJ could see him starting to twitch and move or adjust sitting positions. AJ glanced at the clock. It was just after eleven thirty. AJ said, "There is more humiliation coming I think Dr. Zee."

Yes, it was at the university frat house that affected me most. We had a frat party with a sorority that first week of school. I was trying to be cool and say and do the right things. I'd never drank before that night. The music was loud, kids were yelling and screaming having fun. I'd had two glasses of some sweet punch that was made special for the party. One of the girls there seemed to like me and I led her to my room. My head was spinning. The next thing I know this girl is screaming and ran from the room. Some boys came in, held me down while someone else took my pants off. As soon as the shock was over, an initiation rite was thought up. If any girl could put the head of my member in her mouth, they would give her the Golden Dick award. After all had given it a try and failed, they said a second Jack Pole award would be awarded for any girl who could make that big dick ejaculate. I saw four girls hand upon hand masturbate me."

Afterwards, all I can tell you Dr. Jones, I was never the same. Academically I performed well. Socially, I withdrew and of course left the frat house the next morning. Yes, dreams were horrible. Life for me was miserable. I couldn't imagine why I was chosen to have this birth defect."

Bridging the gap to when I began my practice, I longed for a relationship. I'd met this girl and we seemed to hit it off. In fact we got married. But on our wedding night I tried to penetrate her and tore her vulva. Indeed yes, I felt so bad. I swore that it would never happen again."

"One time I went to a conference. I overheard some blacks talking about having a stable of girls. I thought maybe because blacks are supposed to be well endowed, a black woman would be able to accommodate me. However, I was not going to be laughed at again. I took a fish fillet knife with me just in case. Well this black woman, as big as a house, took a look at my unit and smiled. We were in a flea bag hotel room. She got on he hands and knees telling me to take her from behind. All was going well when she told me she would tell the world what a big unit I had. That was when I took my knife and stabbed her in the heart."

"I finished and left. It felt good when I came and when I killed the woman. I did it a couple more times and then I dreamed up the idea of becoming rich off rich women. By then I despised all women, including my wife. I went a little crazy after a couple years being married and raped my wife tearing once again her vagina. My wife went mentally unstable so I sent her to Europe."

After a couple years of amassing a small fortune from rich women, it was time to cut women down to size. I began with the Wrigley woman. She would tell me how she used men and I loathed her for her bragging about it."

"You'll have to admit Dr. Jones, I was very clever and to this minute the police can't prove it was me. The one I really liked was the Robin Hood gig. That bitch was a user and abuser of men. I liked the little dog better than her. Once again, the police can't prove it was me."

"Now it comes to one you aren’t aware of Dr. Jones," as AJ could see this guy was coming to a climax of sorts. AJ remained calm and let him talk, saying nothing. The clock said almost noon. "That attorney Longstreet agreed to pay me half of the life insurance money if I killed his wife. Well, he reneged. The police will find his body in the storage closet at my men's club."

"Well Doctor Jones, how are you going to help me when I really don't need any help? I just wanted to tell you that some killing is to benefit men, not be a crime. I'll have to relocate of course, but that is of no concern of yours. Now, I'm afraid Doctor Jones it's time to say good bye."

AJ saw him reach for something in his pocket and at the same time the cuckoo clock struck twelve noon. The cuckoo stuck its head out to sound off when a startled Dr. Zee turned and fired his pistol at the clock. Then realizing it was only a clock, turned back to see Dr. Jones swing back, flip the handle of his recliner sending the foot rest out, pointed and fired his pistol at the chair. At that moment, the picture on the wall fell down and a voice said:

"Put down your weapon. This is the police."

Dr. Zee quickly raised his pistol and fired at the black hole in the wall as Inspector Cockrun returned two shots that grouped in Dr. Zee's heart.

David waited a few minutes to see if Dr. Zee was moving. Then he looked over at AJ who was lying with his head on the rug st
ill in his chair. AJ started laughing as David asked him if he was hurt.

AJ said, "No I'm fine David, but am stuck here until you or someone helps me up."

David pushed out the fireplace insert and made his way to AJ who looked up at him smiled and shrugged his shoulders. Gently David helps him up and left the chair where it was for evidence. AJ said, "We must turn on the a/c so as to rid the place of the cordite smell. Also, I'd guess we best open the door and let our friends in."

David hurried to the door after checking to make sure Dr. Zee was dead. He opened the door to see Janice first and then saw both the captain and the mayor looking anxiously at him. Janice was in his arms quietly crying tears of happiness. He smiled and nodded to the captain to enter but told them not to touch anything. The captain knew the prime suspect and serial killer was dead. The mayor held back allowing the captain to lead her to the living room. No one had heard the shots but all could still smell the release of gunpowder in the air.

AJ had moved to his office sitting behind his desk. After they had both looked at the crime scene and saw how the plan had unfolded, they went to see AJ. Only a few words were spoken. The captain thanked him for his help as well as the mayor saying politically correct words to a concerned citizen.

David had his arm around Janice as they came into the office. It was then that AJ said, "It looks like it was a close call by the blood on your shirt Inspector."

Janice jumped out front and saw where a bullet had grazed his arm just below his shoulder. Later David would laugh saying it was just like a woman to fuss over a small scratch.

Both sat down in front of his desk. No words were spoken for a few minutes until Janice said, "Do you think we deserve a cup of Alex's special blend coffee?"

Alex retorted from the doorway, "Damn tooting we do. Janice would you help me and after that I've some serious shopping to do for dinner tonight with friends."

Soon the penthouse was flooded with police. Dr. Alvin came in the office and said, "Good job and a fitting ending to the case."

Officer Bloom stuck his head in the door and said, "Inspector Cockrun, "You're a fine inspiration to us all. I'm proud to know you and you too Janice. Janice had just finished with a wet towel on David's arm. An aid tech came in and finished up with a bandage on his arm. Janice went to help Alex with the coffee.

AJ said, "Well, not bad for a week's work huh? I know you have reports to write and such things, but at six pm I'm having a special friend for dinner. He would love to meet you and Janice. If possible could you be here for dinner?"

"We wouldn't miss it for love nor money. Wait a minute. Let me rephrase that. We would miss it for all the tea in China. The love part I'd best not mention. I think we did the best we could Doctor Jones. And along the way, I've never felt better about myself since I can't remember when. I no longer want to blow someone away or blow myself away. I thank both you and Alex. I can only hope we can become even better friends than we are now."

At six pm, the penthouse was empty of police except David and Janice. AJ had introduced Jake to both of them. Then AJ showed him the living room describing what happened. Jake looked at the cuckoo clock and shook his head saying, "You'd best get Hans to send over another one as this clock looks dead to me." Then he walked over to the recliner still on its back the recliner. Jake looked at the Kevlar seeing where two bullets had dented the bullet proof fabric. He said, "I'd say the gunman knew how to handle a pistol from the looks of things."

Alex, without a lot of prep time came up with a special dinner. A cob salad, with organic fresh farmers market veggies. Fresh homemade bread from one of his special friends completed the simple menu. Janice begged for the salad dressing recipe, but her request fell on deaf ears.

Dinner dishes were cleared from the dining table by Alex, Janice and David. AJ and Jake sat there talking about old times. Janice brought fresh coffee, along with a bottle of Dram Bouie. Alex followed her with a set of crystal liquor glasses. After all five glasses were filled; a toast to the end of the case was given by Alex. After that a new toast was made by Jake touting that a new beginning for a good cause was to be presented. Both David and Janice were a little mystified by the toast, but never the less, gave it a cherry sound.

Coffee was poured and then AJ said, “David and Janice, we, Jake, Alex and I have some food for thought for you to consider. In other words, we have a proposition for you two to think about. It’s a little complicated, but let me give you the overview and then we can discuss the particulars.”

“Our legal system is not perfect and to certain degree, getting worse. A group of us, sanctioned by the federal government, have come up with a plan to take some repeat and dangerous criminals off the street. We’re not advocating murder or vigilante action, but legal justice served. For example, this Dr. Zee was a case in point. There was no doubt he was guilty. If apprehended, it would have cost the people of this state and of this nation millions to house and try him. He’d languish in a mental institution for decades to come. Or worse yet, be released for one reason or another.”

“What we’re suggesting is a workable plan to put a criminal in a situation where he or she has no option but kill or be killed. Like today, you vocalized that you were police and to throw down the weapon. The criminal refused, so you defended yourself. That’s what we would like to see happen more often.”

“Jake has more to add and some particulars.”

“I know you have many question David and Janice. If we can’t answer a question, we’ll find an answer for you. As you both have many years on the police force, you will continue with that employment towards retirement. My office is here in Chicago, not so far off the waterfront. My firm only uses about half of the available space so that residual space is reserved for the new team. Money is always needed and we will double what you already are making. As a bonus, we will provide you will a two bedroom high rise apartment with all the latest security. With the publicity about to explode, you will be easily recognized. We’re suggesting some disguises are needed for your future; both of you. Now it’s your turn to ask questions.”

  Afterward

It was April in the Rocky Mountains. David and Janice Cockrun, newly married, were standing on the wooden porch of a deluxe log cabin. Both had their arms circled around each other. The setting sun was casting long shadows from the pine trees that framed the cabin.

They had arrived that afternoon following the caretaker up into the forest. The caretaker, Sue Leadfoot, helped them shop for food stuff and other items they might need for their long stay.

Janice said, “This is a dream come true. If I die tomorrow, so be it. But, my husband, before I die and go to never, never land, please send me to heaven like you promised that night on the lake in the car. It’s pay back time big fella.”

“Ah, such a stiff sentence, my Pine Queen.”

  End.

  The Rocky Trail

  An Inspector Cockrun novel

  Prologue

On a winding mountain road, the vehicles bright lights behind him were blinding Old Eddie Two Shoes. Eddie on his way home, slowed down to let it pass. The vehicle went around and stopped in front of him. He saw three men get out with bandanas covering their faces. One was carrying a baseball bat. Eddie froze in fear.

When he woke up in the hospital, his recollection of what happened was vague. The only thing Eddie Two Shoes remembered was seeing more than one guy with red bandanas covering their faces; the smell of booze and a voice saying that this was only a reminder: That the next time, if he didn't sell his land, he would be visiting the happy hunting ground. Then the pain came and lucky for Eddie, unconscious quickly engulfed him.

The three men, laughing, got back in their pickup truck, passed the brown sack with a bottle of dark brown liquid back and forth. The guy riding shotgun, waited until they were a few miles
from the encounter, then threw the baseball bat out the window. They all agreed it was a good paying night's work.

  Chapter I

After a successful ending from a difficult case involving a psychotic serial killer, Inspector David Cockrun and his longtime partner Janice Beaker Cockrun, were on their honeymoon. A friend had offered his log cabin in the Rocky Mountains of Montana for some much needed R & R.

The caretaker, Sue Leadfoot, made sure they were comfortable and well stocked for a months stay. She’d been instructed to keep an eye on them. True to her job, after three days, she drove up to see how the newly weds were fairing.

April weather in the Rocky Mountains can be fickle. It could be a nice warm spring day or it could turn cold and snowy. The weather, as Sue drove up the mountain, seemed a blessing for the two guests. Frosts occurred in the mornings, but in the afternoons, though brisk, were filled with sunshine.

Smoke was pouring out of the chimney pipe, as Sue pulled up next to their rented SUV in her old Ford pickup truck, which had seen better days. Sue waddled out and puffed her overweight body up the stairs to the door.

Janice opened the door with a big smile saying, “Good morning Sue. I’m happy to see you. I need a strange voice to hear after three days of listening to David snoring or, as I find out, he talks to himself.”
