“I made this for you Miss Fawn.”
Taking the drawing, I smiled down at him. “You can just call me Fawn. And this is…” I looked at the drawing of two panthers and a giant black raven flying through the air above them. “This is lovely,” I whispered, tearing up and trying to swallow it back down.
Micah patted me on the side of the arm. “Don’t cry, Fawn. It’s a happy drawing.”
“It certainly is,” I said. Then, bending forward, I asked, “Can I get a hug?”
Micah slammed into me, almost knocking us both backward. He was a solid little man that smelled so much like his dad yet also like a fresh summer’s day. Micah gave me a quick kiss on the cheek before running back and grabbing his mom’s hand.
“I have his clothes and toys in the pack, and I brought his sleeping bag because I didn’t know where you would keep him—”
“It’s going to be fine, Sarah,” Max said, walking forward and grabbing the stuff. “We’re going to camp outside tonight but then Micah and I are gonna work on building a little loft for him in the cabin tomorrow.”
“A loft?” Micah asked, eyes wide.
“Yep, a loft for you and your panther.”
“Wow, that’s so cool!” He jumped up and down, yanking on his mom’s hand. “Right mom? Isn’t that awesome.”
“It is,” she said with a smile. “Now, you know my number, right? You call me anytime.”
Micah rolled his eyes. “I’ll be fine, mom. Rhys is going to teach me football.”
“He is?” she asked Micah but then raised her brows at Max. He shrugged. “Okay, fine. Good. Okay.” She was nervous about leaving her son. Sarah was a good mother.
“He’ll be fine,” Max said. “I’ll have him call you before he goes to bed tonight.”
She smiled a relieved grin at Max and me. “Thank you.” Then, she dropped to her knees and held out her arms. “Come here, little man.” Micah crushed her in a hug. “You be good, okay. And you listen to Max and Fawn, got it?”
“Got it, mommy.”
“Okay, I’ll see you in two days.”
“Okay.”
“Okay.” Sarah watched Micah run off to Rhys’ cabin and quickly wiped at her eyes. “He’ll be okay, right? Even if he shifts?”
“I’m going to work with him on that. We’re going to change together.”
I looked up at Max, surprised but proud to hear that was part of the plan.
“Okay. Don’t let anything happen to him. Or I’ll kill you.” She turned on her heel and walked slowly back to her truck as she watched Rhys tossing a football with Micah.
“She’s a pit bull,” I said with a smile.
“She’s a good mom,” Max said, giving Sarah a quick wave as she left camp.
“She is.”
He wrapped his arm around my lower back and pulled me against him. “Someday, you’re going to be a super mom, too.”
“Someday,” I said, heart warming just thinking about sharing a child with Max.
“Perhaps there’s already one in there,” he said, rubbing my belly. “I mean, hey, we know I’m fertile.”
Rolling my eyes, I pushed his hands away and glared up at him.
He laughed and asked, “Too soon?”
“Too soon.”
Kissing my neck and tickling my waist, Max had me giggling in a matter of seconds. “Okay, I’ll save the virile jokes for later.”
“How about you stop them right now?”
He looked up into the air and tapped his chin in contemplation. “Nope. Never.”
Micah whooped a cheer when he caught the ball and Max gave him a thumbs up. “He’s going to be a handful.”
“Yep.”
“I’m going to need your help.”
“I know.”
“I’m so lucky to have you.” He whispered that last part and when I turned to face him, he had my ring in his hand. “Will you please wear this again?”
I’d left the ring in the cabin when I ran away so it wouldn’t hurt so bad. But that hadn’t worked and I’d been secretly looking for the damned thing for three days. “Yes, of course,” I finally answered, barely trusting my voice.
“I want to marry you and have a thousand babies with you, Fawn Marlow.”
“How about we start with wedding?” I teased.
Max scooped me up and spun me around on the tiny porch of our cabin. He kissed me three times before pulling away. “Deal. Wedding first. Babies soon after.”
I giggled. “Deal.”
And as he held me close and watched his son make a home for himself in Eagle Creek, I stared down at the man I loved and couldn’t imagine a better place to be.
