  “We’re hee-er,” Dani said finally, doing a pretty good imitation of the little girl from Poltergeist announcing the arrival of the ghosts in the TV set.

  Charlie was the first to laugh, smiling at Dani as he did so. She chuckled. Then she did it again. Jake joined in, then Mary. So, finally, did Miss Molly Noodle, barking and wagging her tail, though she couldn’t have known just what they found so hilarious. The five of them snowballed into hysterics.

  And so it was that Ian Campbell, college professor, and Mayor of Gunter’s Gap, Oregon, awakened by the SUV’s headlights shining through his bedroom window, found them sitting in his driveway laughing their fool asses off at the beginning of the end of life as they knew it.
