Grass Page 15

by Cathy MacPhail

  Or could I?

There was maybe one person I could tell. The only person I could trust with that knowledge. I could tell him now and he wouldn’t be in any danger and he’d maybe understand why I’d done it. Why I’d done so many things. And why I couldn’t tell him before.

  Just one person. Sean.

And maybe, just maybe – if I was really lucky – he’d be my mate again.

Not right away, I knew that. It might take time. But I could wait. I would work hard to prove he could trust me again.

It took all my nerve – more than I needed to go out that night I planted the gun – to go to Sean’s house.

I bought myself a packet of Mint Imperials to give me courage and headed for his street. I rang the bell and after an age it was Sean himself who opened the door. As if he’d seen me coming up the path, and had considered ignoring me.

I tried not to stumble over the words. I was so afraid he’d tell me to bog off before I got the chance to say anything.

‘There’s something I have to tell you, Sean.’

He looked at me. Said nothing for a long time. I was sure he was about to shut the door in my face, but he only shrugged his shoulders.

‘Suppose you better come in, then,’ he said.

  And I stepped inside.
