Boyfriends and Best Friends Forever! Page 8

by Katrina Kahler

“Good, let’s get there then!” I said.

Ellie Mae touched Jess on the head with her left index finger. Ellie Mae held out her right hand. A ball of energy appeared in her hand. The ball grew to the size of an open door. Through that door, we could see the General sipping her coffee.

  “Now!” Ellie Mae said.

Jason walked up to me. “Do you want me to go?”

“No, you stay here,” I said. “If something goes wrong, we’ll need you to get Tanya, Kayla, Lori, and Marie so you can all come and save us.”

“Check,” Jason said. “Tanya has been working with Kayla and she’s really learning to control and hone her powers. So, she’ll be ready to help!”

I took Adam’s hand and we passed through the door. Don, Jeanie, and Opal quickly followed us in.

The general saw us. She sighed. “Can’t a general even finish her coffee in peace?” she groaned.

“I thought you’d be happy that we brought Adam back!” I said.

“I would be,” the general sighed. “But I am not stupid. I know there is a catch involved. Especially since you brought Doctor and Barrister Opal with you…” She sighed again. She pointed to Ellie Mae, “And of course their teleporting daughter.” The general rolled her eyes. “We’ve spent billions of taxpayer dollars to build a complex way underground and still you manage to just pop in here.” The general shook her head. “Okay, tell me your demands. Hopefully, we can work this out before my security detail gets here and things become messy. I’ve learned it’s always easier to talk when energy blasts aren’t flying back and forth. What’s the deal you have for me?”

I had to give the general credit. She appeared to be sharper than I thought.

“I want Adam to be free,” I said.

The general nodded impatiently. “Yeah, Lia I get that. Truthfully, I wouldn’t mind that either. He’s a good kid. I don’t want to see him caged up here either. But there’s one small issue. While I may be a big powerful general, I still have to report to my superiors. If we are to let Adam roam free then we have to give them something in return. What do they gain from it? Plus, you have to assure us that he won’t be an insurance risk. What if he destroys a town…”

“I would never destroy a town!” Adam said

“No, not on purpose. Of course not. But say you slipped up and you accidentally flattened a town with a burp or a fart. If the press got wind of the fact that we made you, we would be open to all sorts of lawsuits. People love suing the government. They think we have tons of money.” The general pointed to her coffee maker. I had to use my own money to buy that. Our budgets are tight.”

Don walked forward. “General, I assure you we will keep Adam under control. My wife and I wish for him to come to Centre City to live with us. I will also give him a job with my company, Future Now.”

Jeanie spoke up. “This way, on the odd chance that something did go wrong, people would blame Future Now, instead of you.”

The general smiled. “I like that. I do. That fixes one of my problems. But we still want access to the boy. You know, just in case something special crops up where we could use his unique skill set. I mean…the boy can be a living blast of energy.”

Adam stood up. “I have no problem with that. I won’t hurt anybody, but I will stop anybody whom I deem a threat to my loved ones and to you, General.” Adam looked at the general. “After all, if it wasn’t for you and Doctor Keys, I would not exist and for that I am grateful. I will help when I can.”

“Plus, if the threat is big enough, I can help too!” I said.

The general smiled. “So, I can get two of the most powerful people on earth for the price of one.”

  “Yes,” I answered.

“I love working and fighting side by side with Lia,” Adam said.

The door to the general’s quarters blew open. Dozens of people in uniforms burst into the room.

The general groaned. “Why can’t you ever knock….”

“Shock and awe, sir!” an anxious soldier said.

The general pointed at us. “You aren’t going to shock and awe this bunch.”

“Actually, it was pretty cool!” Adam said. “I liked the booms.”

“Can you guys get out now while we talk?” I told the soldiers. “I don’t like all those guns. I’m afraid you might hurt yourselves.”

“Look, girl!” one soldier said. “I know you may be Super Teen…but my team and I are…”

I exhaled on him. It had been a while since I’d eaten anything so I figured I might have empty stomach breath. Sure enough, he and all the other soldiers dropped to the floor.

I breathed a little puff of breath into my hand near my nose. “Yikes, that is nasty!” I said. I turned to the general. “Do we have a deal?”

The general looked at her fallen soldiers. She looked at us.

Dr. Keys walked into the room. “I told the guards not to overreact, but of course they did,” he said.

The general turned to the doctor. “Did you hear their proposal? What do you think?”

The doctor nodded. “I think it’s the best possible deal for all of us.” He looked at Doctor Opal. “Can we visit and observe Adam from time to time?”

“If Adam wants you to,” Don said.

“I think I would like that. We could do lunch! I’ve always wanted to do lunch!” Adam smiled.

The general chuckled. “Okay, I think we can make this work.”

Adam rushed up and hugged the general and then the doctor. “Thanks! I will do good in this world!”

“I know you will!” the general said.

“I know you will too!” I said.

Adam turned and looked me in the eyes. “I really appreciate all you’ve done for me, Lia. I liked you a lot when I was Brandon. I like you even more now I’m Adam!”

“Right back at you!” I said. Okay not the best response, I admit.

“Now that I’m me and I’m able to see you as both Lia Strong and as Super Teen, I’m hoping we can spend time together now and then. Maybe get to know each other better? Even though I already know you pretty well. After all, I was created to track you down and stop you if you got out of hand.”

“True, though not necessarily a selling point,” I grinned.

Adam took both of my hands. “Lia, from the moment I first met you, I knew I would never be able to destroy you!”

“How sweet!” I said. And I actually meant it.

Adam continued, “I’ve been confused about a lot of stuff in this world. It’s weird knowing I was meant to destroy you, and also knowing that I could never do that! But that’s the only thing I am really certain about.”

“Thanks, Adam, I really appreciate that.”

“He’s so nice,” I heard Ellie Mae say.

“Yes, he will make a wonderful addition to our home,” Jeanie added.

The general cleared her throat. “Okay, this is a fine and touching scene, but I think you people would be best to get back to your homes before the second round of troops comes in. I’d hate to have Super Teen use her super bad breath on more of my troops. I’m already in enough hot water with my superiors for losing a bunch of androids and drones. I’ll have to say it was for a training mission. Hopefully, they’ll be okay with that.”

Adam interrupted her. “I have one more thing to tell Lia before we part!”

“Fine…” the general sighed. She turned to Doctor Keys. “You made him too compassionate.”

  The doctor just smiled.

Adam moved closer to me. “Lia, my only regret is that we will be living in separate towns and probably won’t be able to see each other every day.” He lowered his head.

“Don’t worry, Adam. We’re both super and if you need me to help or to chat, I can be there in a flash.”

  “Ditto!” Adam smiled.

I smiled back and felt a warmth wash over me. I wasn’t cold but a shiver of goosebumps appeared on my skin. On a sudden impulse, I stood on my toes and kissed him on the cheek
.

Adam’s smile widened and I felt my heart melt just a little bit more.

Dear Diary: I’m so happy! Everything has worked out so well! Not perfect, perfect would be Adam and me living in the same town. But I know that can’t happen. He needs his own space. He needs a fresh start. And because we’re both super, we can visit each other fairly easily. Maybe this will even keep our relationship fresh! Okay, Im trying to find the positive side because I really don’t want him to leave Starlight City. But deep down, I know this is best for him. Adam/Quazar will be free to grow on his own. He will become his own person and he will have his own town to protect. I know he’ll do great. And so will I!

Right now though, all I can think about is seeing him again! 

  The end, for now.
