Chapter One
Annalise Kerr knew three of the four men sitting at the table, but tonight they were sitting with a fourth man whom Annalise hadn’t met yet. She’d seen him in here before, but they’d never exchanged a word. She’d been working in Luke’s Bar for several months now, and it never ceased to amaze her how many of the male patrons were drop-dead gorgeous. Racy was turning out to be an interesting town she’d chosen to live in.
Ria Rodriguez, Luke’s second-to-youngest sister, handed her three beers. “Wonder where Kari and Alexa are tonight?” Ria’s voice had a gossipy undertone, which was nothing unusual for her. Annalise found it to be part of her charm.
“Luke said they were checking out other sex shops in Indy and Terre Haute to get ideas. Your sister Magdalena suggested they do that when they contacted her for marketing ideas.” Kari and Alexa owned Racy’s only sex shop, Tye Me Up. It was a play on words, as Kari’s last name was Tye. Annalise thought it a very clever name, and one she might have come up with in her former job in Cincinnati.
Ria gave her a sly smile. “I hardly ever see Kari without Noah and Adison, or Alexa without Chase and Luke. I’m surprised they didn’t go along.”
“I would have except that I’m working, like you should be.” Luke towered over Ria, a scowl on his face. “Stop gossiping.”
Ria rolled her eyes. “You’re my big brother, not my Dom, so buzz off.”
“I’m your employer, Ria.”
“Whatever.”
“I’m going to go and deliver these,” said Annalise, turning away from the spat. Ria had started working for her brother a short time ago, and it was always an entertaining night when they both were here.
“How are you guys tonight?” Annalise placed beers in front of Noah, Adison, and Chase. Then she put on her best smile for the handsome stranger as she handed him his beer. He lifted his gaze, and she sucked in a deep breath. She’d always had a thing for dark-haired men. His dark-brown eyes shone with curiosity and playfulness.
“Annalise, I don’t believe you’ve met Dustin Alexander,” said Noah. “He owns the Racy Animal Clinic.”
“Nice to meet you, Dustin.”
“Nice to meet you, too, Annalise.” His voice washed over her like summer rain, warm and lush. He looked like he could use a shave, and Annalise tried to not stare at the stubble on his chin as an image of it grazing her nipples filled her head. She’d been divorced less than six months and was constantly torn between extreme loneliness, and an overwhelming urge to avoid all men for the rest of her life.
Chase was watching her carefully. “Didn’t I hear you asking about your cat last week?”
Dustin’s gaze sharpened at the question.
“She’s better now.” Her cat had been listless for days and Annalise had been asking anyone who owned one if they had any ideas on what might be wrong. Shadow was the first pet she’d ever owned, and most days she felt clueless on how to take care of her.
Dustin tilted his head. “What was going on with her?”
“Oh, she just seemed really sleepy for a few days, but she’s okay now.”
“Is she up to date on her shots?”
“Shots?” Great. Thanks a lot, Chase. Now she’d look like a prize idiot in front of Mr. Gorgeous Vet.
“Maybe you should bring her in.” Dustin dug in his shirt pock
et and pulled out a business card, handing it to her. “Call anytime. I’m usually there.”
As their fingers brushed, a jolt of electricity shot up Annalise’s arm as if she’d walked too close to high tension wires. She actually had to look away from Dustin’s eyes because she was certain he’d see right through them into the erotic images dancing in her head. She stared at the card. The words made no sense.
“Um, Annalise, I think Ria is trying to get your attention.” Adison’s teasing voice snapped her back to the present.
“Oh…okay.” She put the card in the pocket of her jeans. “Thanks. Okay. I’ll call tomorrow.”
“Please do,” said Dustin, his dark eyes boring into hers.
It wasn’t until Noah, Chase, and Adison began to snicker that she finally recovered enough to turn around and head for the bar. What the hell had just happened to her?
* * * *
Dustin had never seen such a pretty woman. He’d always had a thing for dark-haired girls, and although Annalise’s hair was currently pulled back into a tousled version of a ponytail, he could easily imagine it spread out against a pillow. Her dark eyes had been full of warmth and trust. He watched her curvy ass move in tight jeans as she snaked her way back to the bar. She’d been working here for months, and this was the first time he’d said anything to her.
“Cute, isn’t she?” Chase had a stupid grin on his face like he’d just caught Dustin masturbating at the table.
“Fuck you, Chase.” Dustin picked up his beer and took a large sip. Why they enjoyed this place was still a mystery. The bar was small, crowded, and loud.
“You should ask her out.” Noah fixed him with a knowing look.
“Why? Because you three say she’s cute?” They’d had this same conversation so many times now that Dustin felt like he was watching a rerun on TV.
“You don’t think she is?” asked Adison.
“Yeah, she’s downright beautiful. So what?” He took another sip of beer.
“So come out of that cave you live in above the clinic and have some fun,” said Chase.
Annalise was at another table delivering drinks. Her warm smoky voice and easy laugh drifted above the din of conversation and filled his head like a siren song. She moved gracefully, and it was obvious how comfortable she was in this bar and with the residents of Racy.
“She’s been here since before Christmas,” said Adison. “How come this is the first time you’ve said something to her?”
“Because you won’t stop pestering me to do so.” He hadn’t talked to her because it had been so long since he’d wanted to ask anyone out that he found it difficult to take the first step. “Where did you say she moved from?” Racy, Indiana, wasn’t exactly the kind of place people flocked to. Most of its ten thousand or so residents had been born here.
“Cincinnati,” said Adison. “We’ve told you that at least ten times now. Stop stalling and ask her out.”
“Fuck you. All three of you.” Dustin drained his beer and signaled for Annalise, not because he particularly wanted another one, but because it would give him a chance to see her up close again.
* * * *
Annalise debated for two days, turning Dustin’s business card over in her hands so much that by the time she finally got up the nerve to call, the corners were bent and she’d somehow managed to put a crease right over the image of a dog and cat dancing the tango. Cute, but not really effective advertising. He needed something catchier and less obvious.
“You’re not in that field anymore,” she mused out loud as she punched in the number of the clinic. It was difficult to turn off the public relations voice in her head. She missed it, and probably always would, but she doubted there was a top-notch PR firm here in northwestern Indiana.
She’d taken the job at Luke’s Bar because it gave her money to live on and she lived within walking distance. But more importantly, it was a chance to do a job that didn’t require her to work seventy hours a week at such a high emotional pace that she had nothing left at the end of the day. Her ex-husband Jim still worked at Compass, and that had made the decision to leave the company, and Ohio, much easier. Even Indiana wasn’t far enough away from Jim, but it was a start.
“Racy Animal Clinic.” She swore it was Dustin who’d answered his own phone. Who did that anymore?
“Oh, hi. This is Annalise Kerr. I’m calling about my cat, Shadow.” Good God. She sounded like a damn idiot. What was wrong with her?
“Hi, Annalise. I’m glad you called.” It was Dustin. Her pulse quickened, and she suddenly felt like she was in middle school again, talking to a boy on the phone for the first time. “When would you like to bring Shadow in?”
“When do you have an opening?”
Dustin chuckled. “Annalise, this is a small town. People just show up.”
There were so many things she found difficult to adjust to in Racy. “I don’t have to work today. Is right now okay?”
“Absolutely. And make sure to bring a stool sample. We’ll check her for tapeworms and other organisms.”
“I didn’t realize there was so much to this.”
“Most people don’t. We’ll talk about routine care while you’re here, too.”
Annalise felt guilty as she fished a stool out of Shadow’s litter box and put it in a plastic bag. She wished she’d asked him what to bring it in, and hoped the bag was all right. It took a lot of work to catch Shadow and put her in the carrier. How did she know where she was going? Perhaps she should ask Dustin if cats could read minds?
The clinic was the end unit in a line of buildings on the corner of Market Street and Riverfront Drive. It overlooked the Iroquois River and the walkway. Annalise loved this area of Racy. It reminded her of the Riverwalk back home. It was much smaller than the one in Cincy, but no less charming.
She pulled into an empty parking spot and held Shadow’s carrier against her coat to protect her from the bitter wind. There was only one other person in the waiting room, and Annalise smiled although she didn’t recognize her. Dustin wasn’t around, and there was no receptionist, but there was a sign-in sheet. Annalise filled out her name, Shadow’s name, and the time she’d arrived. Then she took a seat across from the woman.
After a few moments during which Shadow didn’t stop howling, Dustin came out from the back leading an overweight German shepherd by the collar. The dog started to bark and wag his tail as soon as he saw the woman. “He’s all set, Betty. But I’d like to see him in one week.”
“Oh, thank you, Dustin.” The woman clipped a lead onto the dog’s collar and took him outside.
Dustin waited until the door had closed to smile at Annalise. “That’s the third time this month that dog has had blocked up anal sacs. If she doesn’t stop feeding him table food he’s going to have a host of other problems as well.”
Annalise didn’t know what anal sacs were, and she wasn’t going to ask. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen a German shepherd so fat.”
“I’ve told her they’re prone to hip problems as it is, but her dog loves sausage and sauerkraut and she won’t stop feeding it to him.” He shook his head slightly, and then cut his gaze to the carrier. “That must be Shadow. Bring her on back and let’s have a look at her.”
Once they were in the exam room, Annalise put the carrier up on the metal table and opened the door. Her gray cat emerged from the carrier, turned her big green eyes up toward Dustin’s face, and immediately stopped howling. Annalise was stunned.
Shadow actually let Dustin clip her claws. That particular activity usually ended up with Annalise being covered in scratches. She let him do everything else that was part of his exam, all the while looking at him as if she were in love. Annalise didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. “Unbelievable.”
“Why do you say that?”
She pushed up the sleeves of her sweater and showed him the healing scratches on her forearms. “This is the typical result of me trying to clip her claws or do anything else to her for that mat
ter.”
His grin sent a rush of wetness to her panties, and Annalise had to bite back a moan. “It’s a confidence thing with cats. If you’re relaxed around them, they pick up on that and they in turn relax because they feel secure around you.”
“So…they can read minds then.”
His laugh was quick and easy, and Annalise stared at his lips, wondering what it would feel like to kiss them. She’d better stop this shit and fast or she’d make a damn fool of herself. “Well, not exactly. They do however pick up on our emotions quite easily, as most animals do.”
He finished his exam, and then he casually stroked Shadow’s back while he continued to speak to Annalise. “She looks fine, although I still need to check her stool. Where did you get her?”
“My aunt lives in Lafayette, and when I first moved from Cincy I stayed with her for a while. She had a bunch of barn cats and gave me this one because she preferred to be indoors, and Aunt Jenny already had a house full of pets. I think she just thought I’d do better with a pet, living on my own and all.”
He asked more questions about what she fed Shadow, and whether she brushed her regularly. By the time Shadow was back in her carrier and ready to leave, Annalise knew more about caring for cats than she ever thought she’d need to know. She followed Dustin back out to the lobby where a young woman with a small dog waited.
“I’ll be with you in a minute, Michelle.” He began to punch information into a computer, and Annalise glanced around.
“Don’t you have a staff?”
