Blood & Bone Page 8

by S. H. Roddey

As a made my way down the building and walked back toward the nearby town in the stillness of the evening, I wondered if a different outcome was possible. Could she have been redeemed?

Not likely, and had she been allowed to live, she would have done so in constant pain and misery. She would have also become a target for the madmen who sought immortality, an easy mark in her state of blind mania.

Killing her was a mercy, I told myself.

I very much doubted I would see Luke again for a long time, and from what little I knew of Judas, I did not expect to see him again…well, not until I came across another of those coins. If I did. I needed to process my life as it was and reassess what it could be. The joy of killing still burned in my veins, and I wanted to hate myself for it.

I did hate myself for it.

But I feared I could not control the rage.

I shouldered my pack and began the long walk back to Budapest and the docks on the Danube. In the predawn dimness, I was alone with my thoughts. I considered the two pieces of advice Judas imparted before his departure: change my name and go to New York. I’d yet to travel to America, and it seemed as good a destination as any.

Eleven days later, I stood at the ticket booth of the docks in London with the intent of taking a ship across the ocean. A change of scenery seemed to be exactly what I needed.

This book is a work of fiction. Any resemblance to any person, living or dead, is coincidental. Except that bit about that guy. That’s totally a thing. No, it’s not really a thing. Come on, do you think I’d admit it here if it was really a thing? Give me a little credit. Jeez.
