After the Indians left, Grant pulled Charlie aside. “Your suggestion that I participate in the shooting was absolutely brilliant.”
“It was you, Mr. President, who suggested I give a demonstration of my shooting skills. I saw you shoot and I knew that nothing impresses an Indian more than a man who can handle a gun. And you, sir, can handle a gun. So I figured, why not have you participate. I know you made a friend in Geronimo, and he’s the one tough nut to crack. I know that you did it. He’ll be telling his tribe about how he and the great white father shot together, and he’ll have Naiche, chief of the Chiricahua Apaches, there to back him up.
“Excuse me,” a feminine voice said behind them. Both men turned to see Nellie standing by the open door with a grin on her face. “I was upstairs watching the shooting exhibition.” She turned to her father. “I was so proud of you when you hit the bullseye bullseye , Father. It was grand watching all of this happening right in front of me. Now, if you don’t mind I would like Mr. Longstreet to walk the gardens with me. There are a lot of questions I would like to ask him . ” Charlie could tell by the look on the president ’ s face that he wasn ’ t happy with Charlie walking with his daughter alone in the garden. Charlie shrugged sheepishly feeling trapped in a situation not of his making. Oh well he thought. After all tomorrow is another day, and tomorrow I ’ ll be back in the saddle riding towards another adventure, … and that comforting thought brought a smile to his lips.
