Was I so desperate that while I hated Julien for betraying me, I also wanted to have him hold me and give me comfort? It didn’t make sense, I know. I was faced with an impossible choice. I could either walk away from the love that I felt for Julien, the love I hoped he would have for me too, or I could march back into that house and listen to whatever bullshit excuse he had to offer. Neither choice gave me a happily ever after.
If I walked away from Julien, I would be losing a piece of myself. Somehow in all the craziness between us, I had given him my heart. It wasn’t intentional. I hadn’t planned on it. But, after that first night with him, everything changed. I changed! If I stayed, I would be going against everything I believed in; allowing Julien to continuously hurt me, with no certainty that we would ever really have a future.
It was too much! Going home, to my bed where Julien and I had been together not too long ago, was not an option. Calling my best friends was surely out of the question as well. I needed an escape and since Julien was now part of my problem, I had no choice but to go to the only person left whom I could trust.
I reaching over to the passenger seat and grabbed my phone. I dialed the number from memory and almost smiled that after a year I hadn’t forgotten it.
“Hey, you do still want to talk?” I asked Adam the minute he answered the phone.
“Umm… Hey Em, sure…” he stuttered, obviously shocked that I had called; the first call from me in a year.
“Meet you at your place in ten,” I said before hanging up, not leaving room for him to object. If Adam wanted to talk to me then he would have to make sure that he was home in ten minutes.
I peeled away from Julien’s driveway, tossing the phone back on the passenger seat, determined to put him and all my feelings for the man behind me. I couldn’t betray myself, or who I was. I couldn’t pretend that Julien and I had a future, not when he was already married to Charlette. No, if I wanted to regain control over my life then I needed to go back to the last place that I’d felt safe. And now, knowing that Adam had been innocent all along, made that possible.
The sound of my phone ringing brought me out of my reverie. At the light, I reached over, grabbed the phone and clenched my jaw. It was Julien! Should I pick up and tell the asshole where to go?
As the light turned green, I answered. Julien Belmont had to know that not only was I through with him, but that he would greatly regret all that he had done to me.
“Listen up! I am done Julien!” I yelled into the phone, bringing the device up in front of my mouth for effect.
“But Emily, please, you have to listen to me,” he begged.
“I don’t have to do anything. You have hurt me for the last time. So do me a favor and go be with your wife!”
“Emily… please!” he barked.
“J-just leave me alone Julien. That’s all I….”
I looked up just in time to see it coming. I didn’t have enough time to react but the last thing I saw before complete darkness, was a truck coming towards me.
