“To what do I owe the pleasure?” I asked as I sank onto my chair. “Come to share some more fond memories of Jake?”
I saw her wince. Good, she was uncomfortable. What the hell did she want? She had returned my flowers yesterday, a clear sign that she did not want me anymore. She had said she didn’t love me and I had refused to believe it; I had kept trying to woo her, kept making excuses for the horrible words she had flung at me. I had refused to believe she had meant every word she had flung at me because where Oksana Davies was concerned, I apparently had no pride.
It still smarted to remember how she had treated me, how she had acted after we made love, how she had blithely informed me that her ex still had her heart even though I could clearly see the love shining in her eyes.
She came around the desk, her eyes trained on mine as she announced, “I’ve been a fool.”
I kept silent, sipping some more water and feeling the cool liquid sluice down my throat.
“I’m sorry, Nick,” she told me, leaning against my desk. “I said such hateful things about you. Please forgive me.”
I looked at her directly, my heart closed to her. “Okay. Anything else?”
She looked at me in confusion. “I, I”
“You said you wanted us to be over. I honored your request. You wanted forgiveness, you have it. If you have nothing else to say to me, get out.”
I saw tears burn bright behind her eyes and I looked away. Whatever else she might be, I couldn’t bear to watch her upset.
She sank to her knees in front of my seat, draping her hands on my thighs. “Please. I deserve your anger. I deserve anything you mete out. What I did was unpardonable. But please, Nick, please don’t shut me out.”
I looked away. “I don’t know what you’re talking about, Oksana. I don’t know what fresh idea you have in your mind but I need to go home. As you can see, I’m not feeling so good,” I told her springing to my feet and heading towards the door, leaving her kneeling by my chair.
“Please,” she begged weeping openly now. “I love you, Nick. Only you.”
I froze in my tracks. Was this her newest trick? I turned to look at her.
Sincerity and pain blazed back at me from her gaze. “Please. I love you, Nick. I love you with all my heart. It has always ever been you.”
“You said”
She shook her head interrupting me, “I said a lot of stupid things I regret. I didn’t mean any of them.”
She rose to her feet, her eyes trained on mine.
“Why did you say those things then?”
“I said them because I thought I would never have kids and I didn’t want to trap you in a childless marriage when I knew you loved kids so much. I knew that was the only thing I could do to make you leave me and make you forget about me.”
My eyes went cold as I tugged my forelock in a parody of a salute, “Then allow me to congratulate you on a mission well-accomplished.”
She ran across the room to fling herself into my arms. She didn’t fight fair, I thought, as she wound her arms around my neck and melded her lips to mine.
She was sobbing repeatedly against my lips, “Remember me. Remember me.”
I groaned, surrendering as my hands came about her holding her waist and pressing her closer to me as she kissed me.
“Remember me, Nick. Remember me,” she repeated feverishly as she continued to kiss me.
“I never forgot, Oksana,” I whispered.
Her hands wound around me and I deepened the kiss, my hands stroking her back, her hips, her waist, her supple buttocks, kneading and squeezing.
“I love you, Nick. Only you. I love you,” she whispered again.
“I love you too, baby. I don’t care if we have a million babies or none. I want you!” I rasped hungrily. My arousal pressed against her belly and she giggled.
She leaned back to smirk up at me. “And that’s one of the things I love about you Nick. Just mention sex and you’re hard and ready.”
“Every time I see you, I’m hard and ready. It’s a crying shame because I’ll probably spend our wedding day moving around with a permanent hard-on and scaring old ladies.”
“Pervert. You won’t scare your grandmother though,” she snorted.
I pulled her ear gently, laughing as I said, “Grandmama doesn’t scare easily. She would probably just give me a smack for being so impolite to our guests.”
I looked down at the woman in my arms. I never thought I would laugh again; since she left me I thought that was the end of the world. But now… I felt as though I had never been happier in my entire life.
I quickly scanned my memory and realized I really never had been.
I wanted this moment to last forever; I wanted to wake up every morning with Oksana Davies by my side; I wanted her to be my wife and the mother of our kids. If she couldn’t have kids, there were a zillion kids just waiting to be adopted and I knew we both had more than enough love to give those kids.
“Will you marry me?” I asked, holding her gaze directly.
Her eyes widened, then her lashes dropped, fanning against her cheeks as she said, “I will marry you this instant, Nicholas Carradigne. I love you. I want forever with you. I can’t get enough of you.”
“I love you,” I repeated as I took her lips in another kiss. “Now and always.”
She grinned at me. “I know, Nick.”
Her eyes were shining so much as though she knew some amazing secret I didn’t. I cocked my head to the side, trying to read her mind. I couldn’t, so I said, “What aren’t you telling me?”
Her smile unfurled like a beautiful rose as she said slowly, “I’m pregnant, Nick. We’re pregnant.”
EPILOGUE – Nick Carradigne
It has always been my considered opinion that doctors were sympathetic to everyone but their own and that view was re-enforced as I watched my colleagues laugh at me. I couldn’t really blame them; I was a seasoned medical practitioner with years of experience under my belt and here I was making a spectacle of myself because my wife was in labor.
“Hey, Carradigne? Sure you’re not gonna pass out?” someone called.
My glare could have pulverized rock.
I tightened my hand on Oksana’s, willing my strength into her as she half-bowed forward to bring our baby into the world.
“Unnnnnhhh!” she grunted, squeezing my hand so hard I felt certain the bones would break.
“The last one,” one of the doctors urged.
She gave one last push and our tiny bundle of miracle, Abigail Carradigne, squirted into the world, pink and squalling. She was followed shortly by her brother Pete Carradigne.
As the twins were immediately whisked into blankets, they increased their wails, telling us all that they had very strong lungs.
Oksana held her hands out for her babies and the nurses carefully deposited a baby in each arm. As she held them, I leaned over her to smile down at the twins and their mother, the woman who had made my life complete.
Someone whispered, “Wow. Doctor’s twins are cute as ten buttons.”
“Of course they are. Have you seen their mother?” someone else whispered back.
I didn’t answer them. I was too busy kissing my wife, this woman who had made the circle of my life complete and given me the stars, the moon and everything in between.
