Hannah looked at her hands, folded in her lap. "My father told me to take the twins back to Earth for us to live with his sister." She’d always dreamed her family would return to Earth, where she could make her own decisions about technology, choose her own mate. But now ...
"Doesn't sound like something you're interested in doing, am I right?" He leaned forward and rested his forearm on the arm of the chair.
"Well," she looked up at him through her bangs. "I don’t have much choice."
He stroked the stubble on his chin. "What if you could provide for your siblings and not have to go back to Earth?"
"How would that be possible?" She tilted her head.
"We happen to need to recruit a System Ranger or two for a planned New Goshen outpost. But it would mean having to give up your antitech way of life."
Hannah's head swam with the idea. "Me? I ... I don't know."
"It's fine. You don't have to give me an answer right now. You have until the rescue ship comes for me to make up your mind. Think it over. I'm not going anywhere soon."
"Thank you," she replied and slowly stood up. Looking around the room, she saw the people she loved, the world she loved. And Isaac. The young man she was growing to love. And then it hit her, for the first time in her life, she felt in control of her own destiny.
She dropped back onto the stool. "I have my answer."
The End
