  She even wrote, “Fuck you!” into the carpet of the bedroom.

  Karen walked outside and took a matchbook out of her pocket; the one for the cigarettes James had been trying to get her to quit.

  She lit a cigarette and took a drag, “No one fuckin’ touches my kids!”

  She flicked the butt onto the trail laced with gasoline.

  A fiery road burnt slowly up the hill and into the beautiful Victorian manor.

  She had once cried with joy when she thought her family would live and grow in this house. Now she was dry-eyed.

  There was a beautiful moment of serenity as the red light of the firewood inside cast a hue of red and gold through the windows. And then the windows were gone; as were the walls, and the door, and the roof.

  She walked back to the bench and sat down. She hugged her two children.

  How does Salem, Massachusetts sound?”
