  April

Let me tell you about how it all ended for me. April and I have enjoyed a long and sometimes turbulent relationship. The first time I saw April she was walking across the yard on her first day at Spelman, and I fell in love with her instantly.

April thought I was arrogant and rude, and she hated my northeastern accent; said it was like talking to one of the Kennedy’s. She couldn’t stand me at first, but by the end of fall semester, I had worn her down.

April’s from Charlotte, North Carolina; the youngest of Doctor and Doctor Vigil Thompson’s six children. She was so fine when I met her and she still is. She’s five, five and slim, but not skinny by any means. April’s got what some would consider the perfect 36-24-36 body, with a D cup. But it was her eyes that drew me to her. Her thick eyebrows and long, seductive eyelashes accent her dark, oval eyes.

I know that over the years, April always assumed I cheated on her, but she never actually caught me with so much as another women’s phone number. But the truth of the matter is that her assumptions were not unfounded. I’ve had many sexual encounters with the opposite sex. Some women don’t seem to care if you got somebody. They just want a man.

I was honest with each of them about my relationship with April, and I’m very blunt about my feelings for her. I love April. She came first. All they could ever hope to be was second. None seemed to care. So they’d come and go, like women through a revolving door. Each accepted the roll gladly and played the part well, until one or the other of us got tired of the situation. Every now and then, a woman would come along thinking she could take me from April; taking a stand, causing controversy and drama. “Me or her?” Trying to force me to choose. But when the smoke cleared it would always be April, still standing, untouched and unaware of the storm that surrounded her. I love April. Sometimes I ask myself why I do it. But I never have a good answer.

I rolled over in bed and reached out, but there was nobody there. I could hear the water running in the shower. I sat up and looked around. “This is the hangover I was expecting.” I laid back down and pulled the covers over my head. The sound of running water stopped, and shortly thereafter, the bathroom door opened.

“Good morning,” I said from under the covers.

“Ooh! You scared me. I thought you were still sleep. Did I wake you up? I tried to be quiet, but I guess there ain’t no way to make a shower run quietly, anyway, how you doin’, Rick? And by the way, it’s afternoon,” Karen said, talking a mile a minute.

“Well, good afternoon then.” If it was afternoon, I needed to get out of bed. As much as I hated to, I decided to surface from under the covers. “What time is it anyway?”

“Quarter to one. Didn’t you say you had somewhere to go today? I didn’t even think about that when I woke up. I was up for a while before I dragged my ass outta bed and got in the shower. If I had thought about it, I would have woke you up. What time you supposed to be there anyway?” Karen said, as she wandered around the room looking through the assortment of clothes we’d practically torn off one another.

I met Karen last night at a party Victor and Keisha were throwing. She worked with Keisha and had come to the party with six other women that made me consider asking Keisha for a job. The thought passed quickly. Karen stood five feet six inches tall, pecan tan and thick. Not fat by any stretch of the imagination. I noticed her watching me while I was talking to Vic and Keisha. After that, whenever I looked around for her, Karen was watching me. All night long, she and her partners were always surrounded by men, circling them like vultures. My opportunity came when she got up to dance. I grabbed Keisha and dragged her out on the floor. I angled my way toward her and explained that I was going to leave her the first chance I got. “So don’t be mad at me.”

When Karen started to sit down, as promised, I left Keisha and went after her. We danced and talked the rest of night. After the party we went to Hairston’s, before ending up at my house about four in the morning.

“What are you looking for anyway?” I asked.

“I ain’t really lookin’ for nothing; I’m thinking about getting back in that bed, but I know I got some place I gotta be, so I been trying to talk myself out of it.” She stopped walking, but not talking. Damn, she could talk. “That’s why I gotta keep moving, ’cause if I keep standin’ here lookin’ at you and that tent I see there, I might have to drop this towel and get back in that bed and I ain’t tryin’ ta do that, but it ain’t like I don’t want to, boo, ’cause I’m damn sure thinkin’ ’bout droppin’ this towel and crawlin’ back between them sheets and gettin’ some of that dick before I go”—she shook her head; started picking up her clothes and laying them out on the bed—“but I gotta go. I tried to wake you up, but you were dead to world, I’m gonna leave you my number, call me sometime so we can hang out, but let’s go someplace other than Hairston’s next time, it was cool since we was both coming this way, but there’s too much posing and not enough partying goin’ on up in there for my taste.” She reached for her bra and I sat up in anticipation of the dropping of the towel.

  The towel dropped.

  I smiled.

  “What you smiling ’bout?”

“Looking at you.” She looked good.

“Oh really.” She smiled back. “I guess that means I’ll hear from you again, huh?”

“Why wait,” I said and got out of the bed. “Come here.”

She giggled a little and took a step toward me. “I got someplace I gotta go,” she said, and began stoking my erection. Then she kissed it. “And I already took a shower,” she mumbled while she continued kissing and stoking me. I reached between her legs, felt how wet she was, and knew that her objections carried no weight.

I backed her into the bathroom and attacked her tongue with a fury. As I turned on the shower, I dipped two fingers inside of her and could feel the river flowing between her thighs. As we stepped in the shower, I slid my hands from her breasts to her hips to her ass and back up to her breasts again. I squeezed them before lowering my head and taking her nipple betwee
n my teeth. It seemed to send an electric sensation rushing through her veins, ’cause she was ready to climb the walls.

“Oh yes!” she mumbled loudly. “Oh God, YES!”

I kissed her again, nibbled her chin, sucked her neck, and continued squeezing her beautiful breasts. I spread her legs and pinned her up against the shower wall. “I want you in the worse way,” she whispered in my ear as I stroked her hard. “I like that, Rick.”

She closed her eyes and I felt her tremble as I eased that penetrating finger in and out of her. She bit her bottom lip to stop from screaming.

“That feels so good,” she huffed.

I spread her thighs, lifted her off her feet and plunged myself deep inside her. Her eyes widened, her breath caught in her throat and her mouth open. “You are so hard,” she managed.

“You got me this way. Now take it,” I encouraged.

Karen clawed at my neck and back; kissed and sucked my neck. She rocked her hips, moving her body into mine as much as she could while pinned up against the wall. I bent my legs and fucked her harder.

“Yes, Rick! Yesss!” Karen screamed and I felt her juices overflow.

“You are so, , , damn fine!” I said and finished her off.

When I was done, I left her alone in the shower and got back in bed. After a while, Karen came out of the bathroom. “You make sure you call me. Let me find a pen so I can write down my number,” Karen said, searching through her purse. Finding a pen, she continued talking as she wrote her number down on the back of a business card. “I really don’t want this to turn out to be just a one-time thing; I usually don’t do stuff like this. I wanna blame it on being drunk, which I was, but I wasn’t that drunk, I knew exactly what I was doin’,” she said and began getting dressed. “Just like I knew what I was doing just now. Damn that was so good.” Once she finished dressing, she grabbed her purse. “Get up and walk me to the door, Rick,” Karen said, smiling when I got out of bed. “Damn,” she said. “Yeah, you make sure you call me. I don’t mean to be pushy, like I’m tryin’ to force myself on you or nothing, but tonight wouldn’t be too soon. But even if you don’t, I had a good time with you. You’re really a nice guy, so if you don’t call me, please don’t scandalize my name too bad, okay?”

  “I’ll call you, Karen.”

  “Karen! My name is Sharon.”

“Sorry. Yes, I’ll call you, Sharon.”

She kissed me on the cheek. “Don’t be callin’ my house askin’ for no Karen now. The name is on the card; it should be easy for you.” She smiled. “You can read, can’t you? Anyway, you go and handle your business and hopefully I’ll hear from you later or somethin’.” She kissed me again, on the lips this time, and left.

  “Damn, she can talk.”

I walked back to my room looking at the card she had handed me. I threw the card on the dresser, got back in bed, and called Laura at work. Laura’s a food and beverage manager at the PeachtreePlaza Hotel. “Hospitality, Laura Barnes. How may I help you?”

  “Hello, Laura, this is Rick.”

“Hi, Rick. I’m sorry about last night. You forgive me?” she asked. I was supposed to go to the party with Laura, but she had to work.

“No problem. You’re a very busy woman. I understand that. So, how are you?”

“Running. I have three functions today,” Laura explained. “Two at the same time. Then Cathy, one of the other managers, got sick and had to go home. So I have to cover her function in a little while.”

“Sounds like you’re having a hard day.”

“You just don’t know. So, what are you doing?” Laura asked.

  “I’m at home.”

“I’ll meet you there when I’m done.”

“No, April’s gonna meet me here.”

  “April,” Laura said in disgust.

  “Yeah. April.”

“I guess it’s my fault. If I had made it last night, I’d be layin’ there next to you right now. No point crying about it. What about tomorrow?”

  “Going to a play.”

“Don’t tell me, with Miss April,” she said sarcastically.

I had something that I wanted to say to her, but I wasn’t sure whether I should. I decided to go for it. Right here and right now, was as good a time as any. “Listen, Laura, I like you, but you—that’s not fair—neither one of us has time for the other. Maybe if we did, things might be different.”

“You’re not trying to kick me to the curb, are you?” Laura asked. “’Cause that’s sure what it sounds like. I should be the one kicking you to the curb, but I knew the job was dangerous when I took it.”

I thought this was my chance—end it now, before things went any farther. I knew that with her work schedule, I would have to spend less time with April to be available when Laura had time to see me. I wasn’t willing to do that. I like Laura, but our relationship was sex and nothing more. Me and April, on the other hand, had gotten into a real good groove lately. I was spending more and more time with her. We had reached a point where I considered April my best friend. We share everything with each other—well, just about everything. “No, that’s not what I’m saying.” I wasn’t willing to cut Laura loose either. “All I’m saying is, I really like you.”

“Well if you really like me so much, make some time for me. Meet me down here; I’ll get a suite. I’ll bring a bottle of Moet and we can make love in the hot tub.”

“That’s sounds real nice. But I can’t. As much as I want to, I can’t.”

“I know, you promised little Miss April.”

“Exactly, and I’m not gonna dis her. I wouldn’t do you like that: Tell you I’m gonna spend time with you and dis you for April,” I said, even though that’s exactly what I do. “Anyway, how much longer you gonna be there?”

“I told you I gotta cover this function. So I’m gonna be here for at least two, maybe three more hours. But you’re not gonna call me back.”

“You don’t know that. I may just surprise you.”

“Whatever, Rick,” Laura said as she hung up the phone. I laughed and hung up thinking about dissin’ April to be with Laura. I gave thought to the timeline it would take to be with April and still see Laura later in the evening. “No!” I said out loud. “I’m not gonna start that. If I do, she’ll expect it all the time.” That would take me down a road I have no wish to be on. But I’d never met anyone quite like Laura. She was a lot like me in many ways. No, I thought. April is too important to me to risk our relationship to accommodate Laura.

  Donna

It had been a particularly busy day, and I spent the entire day in the office. Around eleven o’clock I had a free minute, so I called April, but she was away from her desk. I left her a message and I called Victor. “What’s up, playa?”

“Lighten up, Vic. I’m tired of runnin’ ho’s. I really just wanna kick it with April.”

“Hello, who is this? No I didn’t hear a true playa say he was tired of runnin’ ho’s?”

  “You heard me, man.”

“I gotta stop calling you playa now. But I understand. The game does get old after a while. It did for me, anyway. But I thought you were a die-hard.”

“Nah, Vic. I’m gonna get old with April. She’s a good girl.”

“I know that, playa. Excuse me, ex-playa. We were all just wondering how long it was gonna take for you to realize it. I always thought April was too good a girl for the way you treat her.”

“Damn, Vic.” I knew he was right. I should have realized this a long time ago, but there’s something about the game that keeps telling me that I could get any woman I wanted. But what did I have to prove, and exactly who was I trying to prove it to? It would be different if I didn’t have April and she wasn’t so cool about—well, about everything. She’s my best friend. I can talk to her about anything and she always understands. Things I’m not good at, April’s right there picking up my slack.

Well if all that’s true, what are you doing with Laura?

  “You didn’t ha
ve to go there.”

“I know that, man. But, you know, honesty is so liberating. I’ve wanted to tell you that for a while. I feel like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders.” Victor laughed. “So what you gonna do with Laura?”

  “She gotta go.”

“Not that I don’t believe you, but I’ll be interested to see. I know you really dig Laura. Anyway, I gotta go, but why don’t you meet me after work for happy hour at the DoubleTreeDoubleTree on Peachtree Dunwoody.”

“Can’t do it. I’m supposed to be meeting Laura tonight.”

“So I’ll see you there, ’cause you know she’s lying. Some people steal, some people gotta drink. Laura gotta tell lies, she can’t help herself.”

“I’ll talk to you later.” I hung up the phone and got back to work. I skipped lunch for a conference call and ordered Chinese food around three, half eating it between calls. It was six o’clock before I realized it. Everyone in the office had gone or was leaving for the day and I still hadn’t heard from Laura. No surprise there, I thought while I finished my paperwork and called it a night. When I passed the receptionist desk on the way out, I noticed that there was a message slip in my box. It was from Laura, saying she wouldn’t be able to make it tonight. “She’s getting better. At least it was the same day.”

I got in my car and decided to meet Victor at the DoubleTreeDoubleTree. When I got there Victor was already there and had found a table close to the buffet. As soon as he saw me come through the door, he stood up and started laughing. All I could do was smile and drop my head. “Okay, so she stood me up.”
