While she waited in her state of limbo, images of Hector came to her mind. She still wasn’t entirely sure he really wanted her as a mate. She had been the one to use the word, but she hadn’t heard it from his lips.
She had no idea how long she had been out from being hit over the head, but she didn’t think it was longer than a few hours. The way her body ached from being crouched in the cage played into the scenario perfectly.
Another scent hit her nose and Angie turned her head to see a woman being carried by the same security guys who tossed Tea out. This woman’s eyes were a dull brown and though her skin was dark, it looked colorless, almost pale at the same time.
“I can walk on my own.” She snapped to the guy on the right but neither of the guards seemed to listen. The two scientists moved from Angie’s cage over to the woman as the security guys strapped her down. One of the guys wearing a lab coat had no hair and the other male looked younger, Hispanic with his dark skin tones and dark brown hair. Even his voice held a hint of Mexican accent.
“I think you need another binding.” His voice sounded like he enjoyed whatever a binding entailed.
“Please don’t.” Panic filled the woman’s soft voice making Angie’s heart sink. Her curly black hair bunched up in spots and Angie wondered how long the woman had been here.
“Yes, I agree.” The second scientist moved over to a table holding needles filled with different color liquids.
“If this little wolf can take your genes then Klaus said you’ll be free.” The bald guy motioned to Angie. The female’s eyes met Angie’s and sorrow filled the dull brown eyes.
“I’m so sorry.” The woman mouthed to Angie. Before Angie processed what she meant, the two burly security guys were at her cage trying to pull her out. Angie fought against them but the damn wolfbane still coursed through her blood weakening her tremendously. Even a new wolf under regular circumstance would have issues with taking these guys, but in her weakened state it made her almost human. Once again, I’m fucking weak.
She landed a kick to the face on one of the guys. He stumbled back but the other male yanked her out of the cage. Angie tried to stand up and run but the one she kicked grabbed Angie’s hair making her cry out in pain. She punched the guy in the throat but he kept his grip tight. The other security guy grabbed her around the waist and lifted her off the ground.
Angie continued to struggle against them but she slowly lost the battle, one of her wrists was bound signaling her defeat. Yet even with it bound, she fought hard until her body was immobilized against a tilted bed like the other woman.
A whimper of pain left the other woman and Angie turned, barely able to see the woman getting a needle in each arm. The bald guy stood on one side withdrawing blood while the other guy injected something.
“Back away.” The bald guy motioned for the two brutes to give Angie space. The syringe the guy had in his hand held dark blood and it pointed toward Angie. She struggled against her restraints, but to no avail. Maybe my mother was right and this is it! I don’t want to die! If she died Hector would lose his wolf and she wouldn’t be able to grow old with him. Maybe dying would let him off the hook about settling down.
Images of him flashed through her mind, then the pain from the needle entering her neck made her whimper. The scientist pushed the plunger down, when the other woman’s blood hit hers, she screamed in pain.
This pain spread faster than the wolfbane. Her body grew weak and her voice turned hoarse but she still writhed in agony, pulling against her bonds which scraped at her wrists. The pain wrapped around her heart and with each beat, it inched farther through her system. Her skull ached and her knees locked under the pressure. What are they doing to me?
A loud bang was followed by a roar. It sounded like a wolf to Angie but she couldn’t focus on anything. Her brain turned hazy, her internal temperature rose under her skin as she fought to stay conscious.
There were screams. They were too deep to be the woman’s, but it grew harder to tell. A weighted blanket seemed to be resting the length of her body, slowly suffocating her.
“Angie stay with me,” Hector said next to her ear. Panic in his voice.
“Save the woman.” Angie managed to whisper. She tried to focus but the small task grew harder to do.
“We have the witch.” Hector rubbed her cheek. Witch? What? “Angie!” Hector yelled at her. Angie tried to come back to him but blackness took over her senses.
CHAPTER ELEVEN
Hector
HECTOR RELEASED ANGIE from her restraints and pulled her into his arms. Having her close helped to pacify his wolf for now. One of the damn guards ran out the back and Hector wanted to give chase but his first priority was Angie. Ash took care of the little witch on the other metal slab. He walked over the dead scientists and kicked the fallen guard. Once he knew they wouldn’t jump up again, he adjusted Angie in his arms.
“Is she okay?” the witch asked while stumbling over to Angie.
“What did they do to her?” Hector scanned his mate’s limp body.
“They injected her with my blood. I’m so sorry. I couldn’t stop them because they’ve been keeping me weak.” The woman could barely stand on her own. Ash wrapped his arm around her to steady her.
“What’s your name?” Ash asked.
“Luna. Luna Lyco. It’s been a while since I heard my own name.” Luna stretched her arms above her head.
“We should get her to the doc.” Hector carried Angie toward the car, Luna and Ash followed close behind.
“A doctor won’t help her,” Luna whispered making Hector freeze in place.
“What’s happening to her?” Hector met Luna’s gaze, sorrow filled her eyes.
“She’ll either die or become a witch. I’m a direct descendant of the first wolf-witch, I took my mother’s last name when I couldn’t shift into a wolf like my father. These bastards have been searching for the perfect subject to inject my blood into.”
“Her name is Angie.” Hector growled low making Luna jump.
“I’m only using their fucking term because I was the one who had to watch hundreds of women die because they couldn’t handle the magic.” Luna stomped her foot down. A low buzz of energy surrounded Luna, ready to explode.
“Continue, please,” Ash offered trying to calm her down. Hector’s wolf itched to get back out and find, and kill, the other guard.
“Angie is the perfect host for both, she was born without a wolf even though she’s a twin brother with a wolf. The next few hours are critical. If she can survive the night, she’ll live. None of the others lived past...” Luna’s voice cracked as tears fell down her face.
“You’re safe. We can bring you home.” Ash rubbed her back. Pity for the little witch helped calm Hector down for a second.
“I don’t know where my home is right now.” Luna’s tears fell faster down her face. Hector hated when women cried, it made both him and his wolf uncomfortable.
“You’ll stay with Angie and me so we can watch her together.” Hector motioned to the car.
“Plus, if you don’t want to stay over at their place you can stay at my house. I live next door to Hector.” Ash climbed into the driver’s seat so Hector could continue to hold his little mate.
“Don’t you leave me Angie.” He pushed back the hair from her face and kissed her head. Her heart continued to beat erratically, it didn’t bring a lot of hope but better than not hearing her heart at all.
She was getting him to care which scared the hell out of him. His wolf wanted to complete the bond right away but his human side overruled his beast. He still wasn’t sure having Angie as his mate was a good thing.
“If the drugs wear off soon, I can help her.” Luna shook out her arms in front of her. “Thanks, by the way.”
Hector raised his gaze from his mate to meet Luna’s eyes.
“For saving me and not killing me. I know how protective wolves are of their mates.” Luna shrugged and then closed her eyes. Time passed
slowly as Ash drove them back to Denver, two hours away from the fucking lab.
Luna’s body slackened against the window, she mumbled something under her breath and the sensation of energy returned to the truck. Luna’s hand grabbed Angie’s leg making Hector’s wolf growl with anger. He may not want a mate but his wolf didn’t give a rat’s ass.
Before he had a chance to do or say anything, Angie gasped for air, her eyes flew open and met Hector’s gaze. Her heartbeat returned to normal after a moment and relief flooded Hector’s body.
“Angie,” Hector whispered and pulled her into a kiss. Relief filled his body.
“You saved me,” Angie whispered back then rubbed her nose against his.
“I’ll always save you. But let’s not make a habit of it.”
“Deal.” Angie sighed and rolled her shoulders. A wince crossed her face but her eyes moved from Hector to Luna. “Are you okay?”
“Yes. I’m glad you’re alive Angie.” Luna grabbed her leg again with a short smile.
“Me too,” Angie said and leaned her head on Hector’s shoulder. “I just need some sleep.” A yawn left her lips.
“Ditto.” Luna leaned against the window and within moments they were both asleep.
Hector held his mate close while she slept. No, she isn’t my mate! “What the fuck am I going to do?” He asked himself more than Ash or his mate.
“She is safe right now, that’s all that matters. Complete the bond and then relax. It’s all you can do.” Ash took in a deep breath, Hector wondered when the big guy would find his own mate.
Time passed with the girls sleeping. Watching Angie’s serene face brought Hector peace of mind. What am I going to do? He wanted his wolf to calm the fuck down, but only thoughts of taking Angie to be his mate seemed to do that. Hector ground his teeth together. Ash stopped at the hotel and Zac walked out Angie’s bag. After a short talk about the quick rescue Ash was back on the road toward their homes. Hector’s mind returned to all the problems he faced as Ash pulled into their neighborhood and stopped at his little house.
Snow caked everything in sight bringing a brightness to the night. In a few hours, the sun would rise but the deep clouds wouldn’t allow it to shine. Winters in Colorado were both beautiful and sad at the same time.
“I’ll watch over Luna. Stop by when you guys are up and moving.” Ash winked and then climbed out of the truck. He made quick work of Luna’s seat belt and carried her towards his house but stopped short.
“If she is still alive when the sun rises, then she should be okay,” Luna whispered. Hector climbed out and took Angie’s sleeping body in his arms. He unlocked the front door and carried her to his bed.
Before he imprinted, this had been where he imagined fucking the innocence away. Now his wolf demanded to bind them together. Hector locked the house down and made sure the heater had been raised to a good temperature for Angie, before climbing into bed next to her. As he drifted off to sleep, he wondered if Angie was going to change again or if the wolf would fight off the witch genes. Tomorrow will tell all.
CHAPTER TWELVE
Hector
HIS CHEST ACHED AND his body felt numb while Hector watched Angie sleep next to him. So much might happen over the next twenty-four hours with the witch genes coming into play. The sun rose over the horizon behind his house bringing a wave of relief.
He never grew close to women for a damn reason. The all-consuming fear of losing her ate at his soul. What the hell is going on with me? Angie yawned and rolled over to face him, her eyes still shut. He listened to her heartbeat for the hundredth time in the last hour. His wolf relaxed in the back of his mind, listening to her steady beating heart.
Letting his body relax he lay back on his pillow and let exhaustion take over for an hour or two. He woke up to Angie kissing his chest with the aroma of pancakes, bacon and eggs filling his nose.
“Shit.” Angie ran out of the room when the bacon’s scent started to smell burnt. Hector stretched before following Angie into the kitchen. She pulled the bacon off in time for most of it not to be burned. “Your naked body is distracting.” Angie’s eyes twinkled as she drank in his body from head to toe then she turned back to her cooking.
“You in my T-shirt is just as distracting.” Hector lifted the hem of said shirt, his fingers grazing against her soft, smooth skin. He wouldn’t complete the bond but he wanted to taste her lovely pussy for now.
“We need food.” Angie popped a piece of pancake into her mouth and smiled at him.
“I’m hungry for you.” Hector kissed the crook of her neck, his cock grew hard just looking at her in his shirt. He quickly turned off the stove before his fingers moved under her panties finding her clit in seconds.
“Oh...” Angie gasped. Hector’s skilled hand played with her clit, his other hand wrapped around her breast under her shirt. Her breathing sped up but before she reached her release, he stopped everything. She whimpered in despair before he turned her around to face him.
Her eyes focused on him while he dropped to his knees, yanked down her panties then licked her wet folds.
“I’m hungry and I want you to cum on my mouth.” He licked her again in one strong stroke making her knees shake. He lifted his gaze to meet hers.
“If you’re so hungry then you better get to eating.” Angie’s eyes sparkled with delight.
“Fuck yes,” he said against her body, his strong hands stabilized her and opened her legs, placing one of them on his shoulders. His hot mouth moved back on her wetness making her moan. He sucked in her sweet juices like he was dying of thirst.
Her moans grew louder and her legs trembled, one of her hands grabbed onto his hair tightly. She was so close. He sensed it in how tight her body became. One last flick of his tongue on her clit and she screamed out his name.
The light in the room grew brighter and then the bulb in the kitchen shattered but Angie’s body still convulsed in pleasure. When she finally stopped shaking, she looked down at Hector.
“Are you hungry for pancakes now?” She winked. They both seemed to want to ignore the light breaking in the kitchen.
After breakfast, they showered together in almost awkward silence. Angie borrowed his phone and went into the bedroom to call her brother. Hector waited a minute but then decided to check on her. He listened to her talk but didn’t intrude, instead he leaned against the wall watching her. A small ball of light hovered half an inch above her hand while she spoke. He opened his mouth to say something, but shut it and waited for her to get off the phone.
“Angie, are you feeling okay?” Hector asked as he walked into the room. The snow had finally let up some and tomorrow commercial flights would resume again.
“Yeah why?” Angie raised an eyebrow. Hector pointed to her hand where the light still hovered.
“What the hell?” Angie raised her hand to her face to get a closer look at her palm. She blinked a few times, and the light vanished.
“Maybe it’s a fluke or residue of the witch’s blood in you?” Hector worried the magic might hurt her.
“What if I’m like my sister-in-law? Like becoming a wolf-witch but in reverse?”
“Wait, what?” Hector asked trying to wrap his mind around the idea of a wolf and witch combo in one person.
“I think Luna and Alia are cousins somehow because they have the same last name. My brother and his two best friends all imprinted with witches. Some way or another they were all turned into werewolves. Aiden told me all the cool stuff about being a wolf isn’t present unless they shift. Like their magical blood conceals the wolf but their scent is crazy different.” Angie dove into the stories of Alia, Maria, and Carmen and how they met their mates. Hector listened in silence while Angie explained.
“So, do you feel like your wolf is fading?” Hector asked after she finished sharing. Angie rolled her shoulders and nibbled on her lower lip.
“I’m not sure. I haven’t really been thinking about her much today and I just became a werewolf. The
re is so much to adjust to.” She shrugged.
Hector studied her for a moment. His wolf pushed to be near her but Hector didn’t move. Part of him was glad she hadn’t mentioned them not completing the bond yet. He didn’t want to talk to her about it. Hector still wasn’t sure if he would be a good mate. Plus, she could still leave me.
“What are your plans after you visit your brother?” Hector felt a tightness in his chest. He needed to know if she would walk away from him or if she wanted come back to Colorado to be with him. He had already been abandoned once before.
“I’m not sure. I mean I want to be near you all the time.” She placed her hand on his leg. “The real question is do you want me mated to you?” Angie swallowed hard making Hector uneasy.
He never let women grow close to his heart and yet somehow Angie had her little hooks in him. His wolf itched to be closer to her while his heart never wanted to let her go. He opened his mouth but the words didn’t come out.
“It’s okay, just think about it.” Angie stood and walked to the bathroom. He shoved his hands through his hair and listened to his wolf whine in the back of his head. His eyes followed her down the hall and when she left his view something inside his body broke.
CHAPTER THIRTEEN
Angie
ANGIE STOOD IN THE bathroom looking at her reflection. She hated her boring appearance once more. Self-loathing thoughts filled her mind the longer she stared at herself. Tears fell down her face, but no matter how hard she tried, they didn’t stop. The light above her head flickered and then sent her into darkness.
She closed her mind, trying to figure out what was going on with her body. When Hector bit her, she had felt her new wolf but now, standing in the darkness, she wasn’t there. The odd presence didn’t linger in the back of Angie’s mind and she wondered if it had to do with the magic running through her body.
