Across the room, Kittal worked on his loathsome machine. Every soft rasp of file on steel as he sharpened the peeler fed Mya’s anger, kindled her rage into a roaring hatred.
Hate…
Hate will keep me alive.
Epilogue
I’ll take these to be washed if you wipe down the tables.” Josie hefted the loaded tray of empty dishes, balancing it on her shoulder as she made her way to the kitchen.
“Sure.” The weight would have been nothing to Lad, but he wouldn’t insult his mother-in-law by suggesting that he take it instead. Besides, Forbish was waiting in the kitchen for her so they could eat a late supper together.
The dinner rush was over, and only a few patrons still relaxed over their meals. The quiet was a nice break from the boisterous revelry of the laborers who came in for a quick ale after work. If he listened carefully, Lad could hear Lissa snoring sweetly in their bedroom.
The front door opened, and Lad looked up.
A beefy man in uniform limped in, leaning heavily on a cane, a massive dog at his side.
“Captain!” It hadn’t been long since Norwood came to see him at the inn. The man’s heartfelt thanks had touched Lad, and they’d parted friends. Though he hadn’t been at all sure that the captain would actually come back, Lad had hoped he would. Smiling and waving toward a chair by the hearth, he asked, “An ale and some cookies?”
“Loren,” the captain said, his voice grave and tinged with unease. “I’ve brought someone to see you.”
Two men entered behind Norwood, and Lad froze.
Sereth? Dee?
Heat flushed through Lad’s body, the runes tattooed upon his skin tingling as if ants trundled along his nerves. The mastiff at Norwood’s hip flattened its ears and growled.
No wonder, I must stink of magic right now.
“Loren.” Sereth nodded and flashed a covert hand signal—all clear, no immediate danger.
Dee strode forward, his gaze clear and direct. “We need your help.”
Never had Lad thought to see these three men together. Why… He could think of only one possible reason.
“What kind of trouble is Mya in now?”

About the Authors
Chris was born and raised in Oregon, Anne in Massachusetts. They met at graduate school in Texas, and have been together ever since. They have been gaming together since 1985, sailing together since 1988, married since 1989, and writing together off and on throughout their relationship. Most astonishingly, they have not killed each other, or even tried to, at any time during the creation or editing of any of their stories…although it was close a few times. The couple has been sailing and writing full time aboard their beloved sailboat, Mr. Mac, since 2009. They return to the US every summer for conventions, so check out jaxbooks.com for updates and events. They are always happy to sign copies of their books and talk to fans.
