Troy was grinning when she walked back out a moment later. “I love your hair all sexy and mussed up like that. It makes me want to take you to bed again.”
“Not until tonight, sailor,” she teased. Her phone buzzed on her nightstand, and she quickly grabbed it before they left. Harper’s name flashed on the screen, and Caitlyn frowned as she read the message.
Holy shit. You won’t believe this. I’m late!
Caitlyn quickly texted her a reply.
Late for what? Troy and I are heading out for a party.
Her phone buzzed again.
My period is late!!! I just took a test. I’m pregnant.
Caitlyn froze, blinking as she looked at her phone. Harper liked to date, but as far as Caitlyn knew, she hadn’t been with anyone seriously in a while. Not that anything was wrong with one-night-stands if you liked that type of thing, but goodness. She hadn’t even realized Harper had been with a man recently.
“What’s wrong?” Troy asked, catching the expression on her face.
“Um, I’m not sure. Hang on a second.”
Do you know who the father is?
Her heart pounded as she waited for Harper’s reply. She hoped her best friend wasn’t insulted, but damn. As far as she knew, Harper wasn’t even seriously dating anyone. What if it was some random guy from a bar and she had no way to track him down?
Her phone buzzed once more, and she looked at it in confusion.
Logan.
Logan? What the hell? Troy walked over, seeing the last text. “Logan? What about Logan?”
“Harper’s pregnant,” Caitlyn whispered. Her heart pounded in her chest, and it felt like all the air had been sucked out of the room. Her friend was probably freaking out, and she couldn’t wrap her head around the fact that Harper and Logan had slept together.
“Pregnant? Holy shit. Who’s the—” Troy cut off, his jaw dropping.
“We have to go,” Caitlyn said softly. “We’re already super late. I’ll call her from the car and see what’s up. Maybe we can stop by tonight if she feels like company; otherwise, I’ll plan to go over there tomorrow morning. Troy, come on,” she said when he didn’t move.
He shook his head, seemingly still in shock. “Holy crap, Butterfly. I mean—Logan. Wow. I figured you and I would get married and have ten kids before he settled down.”
“Ten kids?” she asked with a laugh. She was still flabbergasted, too, but at least Troy was moving now. They walked toward the front door, Troy holding it open and gesturing for her to head out.
He locked the door behind them and sheepishly grinned. “Well, yeah. Eventually. However many kids you want. I’m not in a hurry to rush you into something.”
She looked at him in shock. “You want to get married?”
“Someday, Butterfly. Don’t worry, I’ll get a ring and propose for real. But if I did…”
She was still staring at him in surprise, her heart pounding. “I’d say yes,” she said slowly. “Of course I’d say yes.”
Troy whooped and pulled her into his arms again, kissing her hard on the lips. “I love you, Caitlyn. I don’t care how long it takes for us to get officially engaged, married, or whatever. I know right now that I want to spend all of forever with you.”
Tears smarted her eyes. “I want to spend forever with you, too, Troy.”
“I love you,” he said again huskily. And then he pulled her even closer, kissing her deeply right there in the driveway. She didn’t care if the entire neighborhood saw. She was his, and Troy was hers. They’d already started their own perfect version of forever.
