“I guess you’re right. I just hate that it has come to this. We were good friends. I just don’t understand it,” I stated as I looked out the window.
“Shit, I hate to break it to you, baby, but that’s why I keep my grass cut low. I know you think I don’t listen to you, but back in high school, you told me how she would say slick shit about you and I being together. It tore me up how I ended up getting with her. Only took one time. Niggas quick to say it was just once, but one time is all it takes to make a life,” stated Neron as he made a right turn.
“I took responsibility for my actions and stepped up like a man. I know the shit was foul, but I never meant to hurt you, Kimora. My boy was throwing a block party and, somehow, she was invited – through someone else, I guess. I didn’t invite her ass. Anyway, I saw her eyeing me and stalking me throughout the party, but I avoided her like the plague,” he said sincerely. I was quiet and still looking out the window, so he decided to keep talking.
“Everybody was fuckin’ wasted and I was drunk. I crashed in a guest room and woke up to her riding me. I was drunk, but I ain’t stop her. I should have, and it’s no excuse, but I’m a grown man and can admit my faults. I know this might be hard to hear, but I just want everything out in the open,” he admitted honestly.
It was real hard hearing him confess to me. The truth cut me like a knife through butter. In a way, though, it felt good to hear everything, so I could get closure and stop wondering. I guess he took my silence to continue talking.
“Keep in mind that, just like relationships, friendships can go bad on you, too. You saw the signs, but you gave her the benefit of the doubt for too long,” he uttered.
“You’re making a lot of sense. I was Ray Charles to all her slick shit. It still hurts,” I replied.
“I know, baby. You cared for her, but it’s a lesson learned. Shit, she was like the baby mama from hell for me. Just remember, life will always throw you a sign. You just have to open your eyes. Sometimes, we love a person so much, whether a friend, relative or partner, that we refuse to see the signs right in front of us. She was put in your life for a season and a reason,” he compassionately said.
I took everything in and stared out the window. I never saw how flawed Gabriela was. Damn.

It had been about three weeks, and I’d decided to move back to Jacksonville. My father was not at all happy about my decision, but he realized that I was legally an adult now. He supported Neron and me rekindling our relationship. My Pops knew that Neron was a good dude. Yeah, we were young when we started dating, but he treated me right. The only thing he could hold over Neron’s head was that, after I had moved, he hooked up with my ex-best friend unintentionally.
I was getting ready to fly home and tie up some loose ends. I didn’t want to leave him, but I was only going to be gone for a few days.
“I’mma miss your sweet ass, girl,” Neron said, smacking me on the ass as I bent over to put something into my suitcase.
“You know I’mma miss you more, handsome. Look at some potential shops while I’m gone, so we can take Jacksonville by storm with your barbershop when I get back,” I replied as I turned around smiling at me with my hand on my hip.
“I gotcha, baby,” he replied, pulling me into his arms and sitting me on his lap. “You’ve made me the happiest man these past few days, and I’m grateful that you’ve given me another chance. I will never let you go,” he said, kissing my neck as I giggled.
Things between Neron and me had been amazing since I was released from jail. We hadn’t heard anything from Gabriela, and life was good.
Neron walked me to my rental car and helped load up my luggage into the trunk. He kissed me with so much passion that I wanted to run back inside the house to get some more “See you later” sex.
“I love you. Drive safely to the airport and call me when you touch down,” Neron said once I strapped my seatbelt on.
“Thanks, baby. I sure will. I love you, too,” I said with a sparkle in my eyes as I closed my car door.
I cranked up my car and backed out of the parking space, waving and blowing kisses before I pulled off. Neron stood in place until we could no longer see each other in our sights.
Chapter 26
Neron
I sat down on the sofa and when my cell phone rung from a private number. Call it a hunch or whatever you will, but I felt like I should answer it.
“Hello,” I said with a slight attitude because I never liked picking up my phone for blocked calls. It was either some petty ass person or a bill collector, and I wasn’t trying to hear from either one of the two.
“I wouldn’t have let her leave in that car,” said the unknown caller.
The voice was disguised and it sounded like they may have had an app or something to hide their normal voice. Now I admit I had my share of hoes before Gabriela and I got together, but none of them ever came out of pocket. I kept feeling like Gaby was fucking with me. Weird shit started happening once her crazy ass was discharged from the hospital. First, my car got fucked up. Then, she wanted to try and be all buddy buddy with Kimora, drugged her and then had her arrested. The shit didn’t sit right with me.
“Who the fuck is this?” I questioned. There was complete dead silence, so I repeated myself. “I said, who the fuck is this on my line wasting my time?” I yelled. All I could hear was breathing as the caller hung up on me.
I quickly called Kimora, but her phone went straight to voicemail. That’s when I remembered she said she forgot to charge it before she left and would have to charge it in the rental car.
I normally didn’t give a fuck about phone thugs but, for some reason, the caller knew exactly when Kimora left. Something didn’t feel right.
I called up my father, who was a lieutenant at a local police department. Hopefully, he could trace the caller.
“Pops!” I barked into the phone. I stood up and poured myself a shot of Amsterdam vodka. My nerves were shot. If something happened to Kimora, I would never be able to forgive myself.
“Son is everything okay?” he asked. You could tell I had his attention because, in all my years of life, I’d never called him with this much panic in my voice. I quickly down the shot of alcohol as panic took over my body.
“I think something is going to happen to Kimora. I got a blocked phone call minutes after Kimora left saying that I shouldn’t have let her leave in that car. Can you trace the call? I think she’s in trouble!”
“Son, it’s not that easy to just trace a cell phone call, especially a blocked phone call at that. It takes time. Did she just leave? Maybe you should try and follow her and meet her at the airport,” Pops advised.
I blew air out of my lips in frustration.
“She just left maybe ten minutes ago. I seriously think this has Gabriela’s name written all over it,” I admitted.
“Well, I can’t do anything based on assumptions and gut feelings son.”
“Okay, well I’ll head out and follow her. Thanks pop,” I replied. I grabbed my car keys as sweat oozed from my pores.
“No problem son, keep me posted,” he said sincerely.
We ended our call and I tossed on some Lebron James sneakers and jetted out my front door.
I stepped outside as the cool nights air greeted my face. It was 10pm, so everything was quiet. All forms of life were sleeping. I hopped into my car, cranked the engine and backed out of my parking spot fast and furious. I hoped I was able to catch up to Kimora. I swear if Gabriela had anything to do with this, I was going to ring her neck.
Chapter 27
Gabriela
I sat back and laughed menacingly thinking about how I dropped the charges against Kimora. She was going to learn not to overstep her boundaries with me ever again. She was a friend turned into a foe. Fuck that bitch! She stole what was mine. She snatched my family right from under me.
I maneuvered my car discretely a few parking spaces from their apartment door and parked my car. I killed the
engine. For the past few nights, I started stalking Neron and Kimora’s apartment. I couldn’t let them be happy together, I just couldn’t. I quickly gutted a cigarillo and rolled up some of the best weed. I laughed on the inside as I thought about how my next plan was going to be so easy to put into motion.
I saw perfect ass Kimora exit their apartment with Neron carrying her luggage. I rolled my eyes as Kimora sashayed to her rental car as if she was a damn black Kim Kardashian or somebody. She just appeared to be so unbothered and that instantly angered me and filled my body with jealousy and rage. I watched Neron load up her luggage into the trunk of her rental car and kiss her with so much intensity that I cringed. I needed to calm down so I wouldn’t blow this shit.
I turned on the radio and put the volume on low as I let the voice of Sevyn Skeeter fill the car. I lit my blunt and took a few hits, quickly feeling the effects of the weed. I sat up in my seat and sang along.
“She could be the baddest ever
But you belong to me yeah, me yeah, me yeah
And I ain't with that sharing shit
I don't want to know
how she makes you feel,
Keep all that away from me, far
Away from me, far from me
Whatever whatever whatever it is,
It doesn't matter to me baby, I'm yours
You're still my baby, to the core
Call me crazy crazy crazy crazy I'm yours
I ain't going nowhere, you're my life support.”
“Sevyn made this song strictly for me,” I said to myself as I blew out smoke and coughed.
I watched them make small chat, never taking my eyes off of them as I finished singing the remainder of the song. I turned off the radio, put out my blunt and grabbed my cell phone.
Kimora pulled out of the parking lot and Neron watched her until she was no longer in his sight. I hated the way he cared so much for her as if what he and I shared wasn’t special. I just needed him to see that we could be together again and I would be everything he needed and more. I watched him walked back into the house.
I had my brother, Jose, download an app that would disguise my voice during a phone call. I called Neron, being sure to block my number as I also had the voice application turned on, disguising my voice. After a few rings, his smooth and sexy voice answered the phone. Instantly, his voice made my panties wet. I’ve missed him so much.
“Hello,” said Neron.
I could tell he was irritated.
I didn’t say anything. Instead, I just listened to the sound of his voice. I didn’t even notice how hard I was breathing into the receiver.
I snapped out of my trance and put my plan into motion.
“I wouldn’t of let her leave in that car,” I said, adding more deepness to my voice to make sure he couldn’t recognize me.
“Who the fuck is this?” he shouted into the receiver.
I stayed quiet for a few seconds and that pissed him off even more.
“Who the fuck is this?” he questioned.
I didn’t say another word.
“I said, who the fuck is this on my line wasting my time?” Neron yelled.
When he didn’t get a response, he hung up on me.
I waited ten minutes and saw Neron dart out of the house as if there was a three alarm fire. When I saw him drive down the block and disappear, I jumped out of my car and scurried to his apartment. I lifted up the welcome mat and just as I suspected, the spare key was there. I knew he changed the locks, but he always put a spare under the mat for emergencies. This was too easy.
I unlocked his front door and stepped inside the apartment. The smell of clean linen air freshener greeted my nose. The apartment didn’t even smell nor look the same. I could tell he had Kimora decorate. The first thing that caught my eye was a beautiful portrait of our daughter Mia. My eyes instantly watered as I stared at the picture. I blinked away a few tears as anger began to course through my body.
I looked around at all the fake plants and artwork that brought out the room. The furniture wasn’t even the same. The only thing that hadn’t changed was the flat screen television that Neron cherished so much. Now, a burgundy and beige sofa, loveseat and recliner sat in the living room. Even the stain from when I threw my plate at the television was long gone from the carpet.
I trotted to the kitchen and opened the refrigerator and poured myself a cold glass of Moscato D' Asti. I slowly sipped the wine as I glanced around the kitchen. Everything was incredibly clean and organized. I walked around the rest of the apartment as if it was my first time being there. Everything had changed so much. I walked to the bedroom and stood in the doorway. He’d even tossed out our old bed. I stood there looking at an Asher King bed and turned up my nose. All of this furniture was expensive and I knew it was Kimora’s idea to get rid of Neron’s things.
I sat down on the bed and finished my glass of wine. I sat the glass down on the dresser with my red lipstick sticking to the rim of the glass. I smiled as I envisioned myself moving back into this apartment and laying in bed with Neron. I walked into the bathroom and ran the water to take a shower. I wanted to be fresh for when my man came home.
Kimora thought she was going to replace me and play my position? Nah, she had met her match. If she hadn’t noticed, I was the baby mama from hell and I was here to stay.
