Fake Me Page 20

Farren barked a laugh. It could’ve been a snort, but Grady was too kind to notice those.

  “Where are you taking me?”

“To the observation platform. We can see from there.”

  “See what?”

“Their romantic dinner.” He spoke as if to a child.

“No, no, that’s tomorrow night,” she said, frowning. “I’m sure I booked the group dinner for then.”

“I love your focus on Singles Fest but try to follow along. Think back to our first dinner on the beach.”

He steered her onto the viewing platform and turned her to face the ocean. Then he cozied up behind her and held her shoulders. His mouth sat next to her ear and his breath sent tendrils of heat down her spine.

“Oh, I see,” she said. And suddenly she knew how they must have looked on the night of her surprise dinner on the beach.

Two people sat kitty corner to each other, oblivious to the servers standing off to the side at a prep table filled with everything they’d need to feed the happy couple. Light from the tall lanterns cast a golden glow across Delphine’s face and shoulders, giving her a nimbus worthy of an angel. Farren’s heart expanded as she took in the scene. So sweet. So romantic.

  So very private.

“We shouldn’t be watching this,” she said. “It’s their moment.” She blinked moisture out of her eyes when she saw James rise from his chair to kneel in front of Delphine. “It’s too personal, Grady.” She turned to face him.

He was on one knee, too and in his hand was an open velvet box. She gasped. “Did Delphine shop for this?”

He shook his head. “She doesn’t know you like I do.”

“Oh, Grady.” There, in the box, sat a deep blue square cut sapphire surrounded by diamonds that glittered like stars. “I love it.”

“I can’t face another week without knowing if this is real, Farren. If what we have is forever. Because that’s what I want. Forever with you.”

They’d spoken of their love many times. Simple words with a wealth of meaning. They’d confirmed they wanted children, where they’d live, how they’d manage his newly pared-down schedule. And still, he looked uncertain. For a man whose trust had been shattered, Grady needed to feel her love, not just hear about it.

“Oh, Grady, the fake thing was real from the start, we just didn’t know it.” Farren sank to the wooden planks to join him chest to chest, face to face. His arms closed around her as he set his lips to hers.

They had each other, for real, and forever.
