CYPHER: A Dystopian Novel Page 24

by Barbara Winkes

Ami had for years dreamed of the life she would have one day, with her daughter, a job that paid enough to live, not simply exist, a home that was not government-issued. She’d been dreaming of sharing that life with someone. In order to make that happen, she might have to accept that she couldn’t answer all questions right here and now, and take a chance.

“I always wanted a family,” she said. “I want her back, but without any court or blackmail schemes—and when that happens, could you imagine living with a little girl under the roof?”

The smile on Katlena’s face told her she had understood all the implications.

“Only if the little girl’s mom comes to live with me too.”

Much of their future was still uncertain, except for one thing. No one in this home would ever be just a number.
