“Torrance! We’re back! Where are you?”

She listened, but didn’t hear anything. Maybe Torrance was taking a nap. Alice wasn’t sure. She ran around, scrambling for supplies, and then came back to help Kyle. She poured alcohol over his wound and even though he bit his lip, he didn’t complain as she disinfected his injury. Blood still bubbled from the hole, albeit more slowly.

“What the fuck did you do, buddy?” She shook her head.

“Well, you know, my reflexes are quick but my execution is poor.”

“Don’t joke about stuff like this.”

“Sometimes jokes are all we have, Alice.”

“We have to stop the bleeding completely before I stitch it. We shouldn’t have let you walk back.”

“What was the alternative? Have Mark carry me the whole way?”

  “He would have,” Alice insisted.

  “I know.”

They sat in silence with Alice applying pressure to Kyle’s wound. Every so often, she would check it and change the cloth she was using to stop the bleeding.

Mark returned and joined them in the living room.

  “Still bleeding?”

  “It’s almost stopped.”

  “Where’s Torrance?”

“Question of the day,” Alice sighed. She wasn’t sure where Torrance would have gone. “You can have a look around if you like. Time for me to get this sucker closed up.”

Mark nodded and went upstairs, presumably to look for Torrance.

“I think you know this is going to hurt,” Alice said gently. Kyle nodded. “I’ll try to be gentle.”

“Just do the best you can,” he said. “Don’t worry about hurting me.”

Alice frowned, but took her needle and thread. She wished she wasn’t about to sew up her friend. She’d always been good at sewing, but working on a quilt or a new skirt was different than fixing your friend’s abdominal injury. Kyle’s wound was fairly small, but she worried the stitches wouldn’t be enough.

He cringed when the needle pierced his skin, but didn’t make any noise.

  “Are you okay?”

  “I’m fine. Just do it.”

Alice nodded and got to work. She focused on making her stitches close together and straight, and within a couple of minutes, she was finished.

“I need a drink now,” Kyle said, letting out a breath.

“Of course.” Alice held out the vodka to Kyle and he took a swig, finishing off the bottle.

  “More, please.”

Alice went into the kitchen to find more alcohol, and she noticed there was an open trapdoor in the middle of the kitchen floor. She’d never noticed it there before. What the hell? It must lead to root cellar or a crawl space. Something like that.

  Then she got an idea.

“Torrance?” Alice called out into the hole. “Are you down there?”

“Hang on!” She heard Torrance’s voice echo back to her. A few seconds later, Torrance’s mop of red hair poked through the hole and she grinned at Alice. “You’re not going to believe what I found,” she said.

  Brass Heart Floating

When Gertrude accepts a job in Yoralil, she doesn't expect the cyborgs to have as much of an impact on her life as they do. The "metalheads" are everywhere in the city, and Gertrude hates it. She spends her days working a useless, low-paying office job in a grimy basement and her nights drinking alone in her apartment. Life in Yoralil is not what she imagined. Her dreams came true, sure, but they were also her nightmares.

When Jack walks into her life, Gertrude doesn't recognize him as a cyborg at first. He's nothing like any tin man she's ever met. Despite her prejudices against the robots, Gertrude gradually finds herself falling in love with the man despite his damaged shell.

It's not long, however, before Yoralil finds itself on the brink of anarchy as the MAR prepares to go to war with the anti-robot community.

Will Gertrude stay in Yoralil and defend the one she loves?

Or will she do what she's always done, and run away when it matters the most?
