“Do you like it?” Noah inquired.
“Do I like it? Are you kidding?” Robyn looked up at him through misty eyes. “I love it!”
“Well let me help you put it on,” Noah said as he took the box out of Robyn's hands and removed the delicate chain from it. Robyn turned around and held up her hair to make it easier for him to put the necklace on. When she felt the diamond heart fall on her chest, her hand instinctively rose to hold it.
“There you go, took my clumsy fingers a few seconds to get it on,” Noah said.
“Who have you been talking to?” Robyn asked as she turned around, still clutching onto the heart-shaped pendant.
Noah frowned. “What do you mean?”
“It's just… I've always dreamt of having a necklace like this,” Robyn told him. “I can't believe you knew.”
“Well I’m glad I could make that dream come true for you,” Noah said, watching as she blinked back tears and threw her arms around his neck to hug him.
“I wanted to give you something before I left,” Noah said. “As soon as I saw that I knew it had your name written all over it.”
“How can I ever repay you?” Robyn asked as she took the pendant in her hand again.
“Just say that you'll always be here,” Noah told her, looking deep into her eyes. “I love you with all my heart, Robyn. I couldn't stand to lose you.”
“Oh, I don't think that’ll be a problem,” Robyn promised.
For the remainder of the afternoon, Robyn and Noah took a long walk on his property and then cooled off in the pool. They were both able to forget the fate that was awaiting them and just enjoy each other's company. Then Noah mentioned that he had some steaks in the freezer, and they went inside to prepare dinner together without indulging in their usual glass of wine.
After dinner, Robyn and Noah did the dishes and went out onto the deck to watch the sunset. They sat and talked until their only source of light was the moon, then Noah stood up and took Robyn's hand in his own. “Come on,” he told her. “I think it’s time we take this upstairs.”
Robyn took his hand and followed him up to his bedroom. He closed the door behind them and didn't even bother turning on the lights. He liked the way the moon was illuminating the room. He could see Robyn's silhouette before him and had every intention of showing her how much he loved her.
Noah rested his hands on Robyn’s waist, and she took the cue by letting her own roam up and down his back, going lower and lower each time. As she cupped his firm behind, she could feel his arousal growing against her abdomen. “Make love to me,” she whispered.
Noah moved his fingers to the front of Robyn's chest and took his time undoing all the buttons that were holding her blouse together. When he reached the bottom one, he slowly brought his hands up to her shoulders and gently pushed the garment off, taking her bare breasts in his palms and bringing her nipples to a peak with his thumbs.
Noah then let his hands fall to the button on her jeans and undid them, pushing them to the floor. He hooked his fingers into both sides of her panties and slowly removed them, taking her in his arms and carrying her over to his bed. Once he had undressed himself, he joined her there, and she could feel her body temperature rise as his calloused hands explored her body.
Robyn swore that Noah left no part of her untouched, and by the time he dipped his fingers into her hot core, she was ready for whatever he had to offer. She tilted her head back as he lightly began to massage her sensitive bud. Moaning, she went to take his aroused member in her hand, but he stopped her and whispered, “tonight’s about you. Let me do all the work.”
Robyn shivered as she felt Noah's tongue trace a path from her neck down to her breasts. When he finally reached her center, she quickly and involuntarily thrust her hips upwards, bringing her hands down and letting them get lost in his hair.
A short while later, Robyn covered her face with a pillow and let herself enjoy the orgasm that Noah had so willingly bestowed upon her. After giving her a moment to catch her breath, he covered her body with his own and kissed her passionately, gently guiding himself inside of her and trying his best to keep his pace slow and passionate.
Noah wanted this to be a night that both of them would remember once he was gone. With a few careful thrusts, he felt Robyn tighten around him and let out a low grown before emptying himself inside of her.
It was the perfect end to a perfect day.
Epilogue
Noah parked in the airport parking lot, and he and Robyn sat in silence for a few minutes. She had been on the verge of tears several times that morning, but none were shed as of yet. Regardless, Noah knew the inevitable was coming.
“We should head in,” he suggested.
Robyn nodded and climbed out of his truck, taking the two smaller bags out of the back. Noah handed her the keys, and she promised to keep the truck safe while he was gone.
They didn't say anything to each other as they walked through the parking lot and entered the airport. Noah was relieved to see that there was not a large line at the check-in counter. It only took him five minutes to move through it, then he took Robyn's hand and started for his terminal.
“I have to get some gum for the flight,” he said as they passed a small store, making his way towards it.
Robyn followed him into the store and clung tightly to his hand. She only let go of it long enough to allow him to pay for the few items he had, then they continued towards the security check point and saw his crew readying themselves to get in line.
It had been a few days since Noah had seen any of his team, and they all greeted each other warmly. His brother was the first to approach Robyn, and he promised her that everything would be okay. She flashed him a lame smile that proved she wasn't so sure and stood back as Noah distracted himself by making small talk with the others.
“This is the first call for flight 403 departing for Belgium,” a monotone voice said from over the loud speaker. “Those with priority boarding may now get in line.”
As soon as she heard this, Robyn turned and started fast walking in the other direction. She wasn’t sure where she was going, but she knew it was only a matter of time before Noah caught up with her.
Sure enough, he did.
“Don’t do this,” he said as he grabbed her wrist, stopping her in midstride. “You promised me you wouldn't run, remember?”
Turning towards him, Robyn gave in and stepped into his arms, no longer trying to hold back her tears as he gently stroked her head. He, too, was having trouble controlling himself. He loved this woman deeply, and he hated to see her in so much pain. With one arm around her shoulder, he guided them back to the security point, and his crew tried to give them some privacy as they said their goodbyes.
Noah sat down on a bench off to the side of the line and pulled Robyn down with him. He took her face in his hands and said, “I need you to be strong for us, Robyn.” He let his palm drift down to her still-flat abdomen and added, “for this baby.”
Robyn nodded, managing a small smile through her tears. “Well I hope you have plenty of international minutes, because I’m gonna be blowing up your phone something fierce.”
“That's my girl,” Noah said as he covered her lips with his own. Just as they were getting into the kiss, a final boarding call ruined it.
Robyn took a deep breath and followed Noah back to the security line. He embraced her one last time and said, “don't forget how much I love you.” She looked up into his emerald eyes and told him that she loved him too, all the while trying to keep her tears from falling again.
After giving Robyn one final hug, Noah turned his attention over to his brother’s wife Lana, who was standing off to the side preparing to leave the airport herself. “Please make sure she’s okay,” he requested of her.
“You bet,” Lana said as she put an arm around Robyn. She nodded at the security line. “Anyway, you better get going before you miss your flight.”
/> “Would that really be such a bad thing?” Robyn said, half joking, but also half-serious.
Noah let out a small laugh. “I’ll call you as soon as we get to the hotel,” he promised, giving her one final kiss before turning to get in line.
Robyn watched him disappear through the gate and tried to pull herself together, wiping the tears from her face with the Kleenex she had scrunched up in her hand. She turned around and smiled at Lana, who apparently had shed a few tears herself, and said, “well, there's nothing else to see here. I better get myself to work.”
“Here's my number,” Lana said as she held out one of her business cards to her. “Just in case you need to talk. Trust me – I know how you must be feeling right now.”
“Thanks, that means a lot,” Robyn said as they started walking through the airport. They said goodbye out in the parking lot and promised each other that they would keep in touch.
Robyn was halfway to her office when she felt her phone vibrate. Pulling off onto the shoulder of the road, she shifted into park and fished it out of her purse. On the screen was a text from Noah, and his words brought an immediate smile to her face.
How does a European wedding sound to you?
Taking a moment to digest the question, Robyn held back happy tears and responded:
Perfect.
It sounds perfect.
The End.

Prologue
God, it was hot!
Bianca loved Florida, and she loved the heat, but August was almost too much. The air conditioning in her car was temperamental even during the milder winter months, so it went without saying that it hated August. And Bianca hated August too. It seemed to her that every lousy thing that had ever happened in her life had happened in August.
It all started when her father died in August twelve years ago – suddenly, dramatically – shot dead in a convenience store when he stopped for cigarettes in the middle of a robbery.
That one event had thrown the whole family into a tailspin.
The following August then saw the departure of Bianca’s oldest brother, Cedric, for college. His leaving rocked the foundations of the family again. Cedric had taken over as the head of the household after his father’s death. Bianca’s mother, Gladys, hadn’t recovered from the sudden loss of her husband and spent the year mooning about, mourning the loss of the man who had made every decision for her for the past twenty-years.
When Cedric left, Wayne, the second oldest at seventeen, tried to assume the role of head of the household but he had always been weaker than Cedric and was too self-indulgent to worry about his younger sister Bianca, who at sixteen was hell on wheels.
Bianca had been her father’s pride and joy, “my munchkin” he called her, and her sense of rage and despair at his loss manifested itself in wild, rebellious behavior. She ignored her curfew, she started wearing revealing clothing, she teased the boys she dated almost to the point of violence…and she drank.
Bianca’s mother barely even noticed that her daughter was teetering on the brink, and Wayne had enough to think about with his own schoolwork and getting into college. Besides, he had no idea how to talk to Bianca about the sex part anyway, and he was unaware of the drinking.
The only real silver lining was that money was never a problem for the family. Bianca’s father made a comfortable living, and his double-indemnity insurance policy had been wisely invested to provide for three college educations. On top of that, the corporation that owned the convenience store had practically thrown money at them, having lawyers making settlement offers even before the funeral occurred.
When all was said and done, the settlement provided a comfortable living for Bianca’s mother, who had never worked outside the home and showed no desire to begin.
Bianca’s mother spent the two years following her husband’s death cleaning house. It was already spotless before she started, but she still spent her days moving from room to room dusting, polishing and scouring, and keeping a tight rein on the only part of her life she could control.
The year Wayne left for college, Bianca was a senior in high school. She wanted to go to college the next year herself, but she knew she had to get her grades up first. She was bright enough but had done little school work in the previous two years, preferring instead to cut class and head to the park with a bottle of liquor and her latest conquest.
There she would drink herself into oblivion and please the boys with her hands and her mouth. She had two strict rules – she wouldn’t go down, and she wouldn’t go all the way. A boy who tried too hard to convince her to break those rules would find himself frozen out of her life and occasionally dealt an embarrassing injury.
Eventually, Bianca got a bad reputation as a drunk and a “hoe”. Her guidance counselor tried to help her, but Bianca didn’t want to hear it.
“Life’s short,” she told him. “I’m here for a good time, not a long time.”
Even so, her teachers watched her carefully and made sure she did enough schoolwork to pass her year. And in her senior year, Bianca cleaned up her act. She got straight A’s and went to college. She straightened out her life and cut the drinking down to a social level. And in the end, the transformation was phenomenal and almost as worrying to her teachers as the previous incarnation. They wondered if she was coming back to where she should be or simply slipping on another mask to hide the unresolved turmoil inside her.
Bianca’s purpose was simple, though – to get the hell out of town and leave Indiana behind forever. She wanted to become a teacher; she figured that was a job you could do anywhere. She was going to move south, or maybe somewhere warm, like Florida or California.
Bianca applied to various colleges, and when she was accepted at the University of Florida, she went there. The University was in Gainesville in Central Florida, but in Florida you’re not ever more than a couple of hours from the coast in any direction.
Bianca quickly discovered that she loved
the ocean, and she went there every chance she got. She worked hard and got her teaching qualifications, but unfortunately, the state was in a period of declining enrollment when she graduated, which meant new teachers were not being hired.
Bianca did substitute teaching for a year, but that was not steady enough to provide an adequate income, and besides, it was hard, hard work.
When she still hadn’t got a full-time position by the next year, Bianca had to make a decision – either move somewhere else and get a teaching job or stay in Florida and do something different. And so she went into retail instead, working her way up to Assistant Buyer in the shoe department of a large department store chain.
