But then I’d had to go home. He flew me over to see him once a month. This time out, I decided we had to talk. This long distance shit was old. I didn’t need to live in Chicago to work. I could write anywhere. And I’d talked to my editor. He agreed to keep me on if I promised to write travel pieces for him. So I’d still have a job. I’d also finished my classes at school, and I was looking into what it took to transfer to a school here, in Ireland.
If Declan wanted me.
I found that I was shy about bringing it up, but it had to be said. It had been a year, and we needed to make a move. Since it would be me moving in with him, inviting myself in, actually, I couldn’t calm the butterflies.
I’d suggested we come here for a couple of days.
Arms snaked around my waist. “You trying to hide from me?”
I slid my arm up around his neck. “No, just trying to stir up my courage.”
His face took on a wary look. “For what?”
I inhaled deeply, all the way down to my toes. “We’ve been doing this long distance thing for a year. I can’t do it anymore.”
“You want to break up?”
“Don’t be dumb,” I gave his arm a tap. “No, but I do want to move into your place. I know how private you are,” I hurried before he could tell me no. “I think we’d be all right, and do well living together. Please don’t say no,” I ended, turning so that I was wrapped in his arms and facing him.
Declan let go of me. “Well, that’s not quite what I was thinking.”
I felt the blood drain from my face. “You weren’t?” I whispered. He seemed so far away.
He shook his head. “No, I had something different in mind.”
“What?” I barely got the word out.
“More like this,” Declan reached into his pocket and pulled something out, stretching his arm to me. “I’d meant for it to be better, to be… well, it doesn’t matter. What matters is that I agree with you. I want this long distance shit to end. And with that in mind, I figured we could get married, and make it legal. So yes, you’d have to move in with me,” he finished with a smile.
I didn’t know what to say.
“Say something, Jyn,” he said. “Will you marry me?”
“Yes,” I whispered.
“Yes? Was that a yes?” Declan stepped closer to me, taking my hands in his. “Will you marry me, beautiful, amazing Jynger Lyle, and make me the happiest man who ever walked the earth?”
“Yes,” I said, louder this time.
He took my left hand and slid a ring onto my fourth finger. I saw the sparkle of a stone, but I didn’t care.
I pulled him to me and kissed him, the desire and happiness his kiss brought pooling in my stomach. The world stretched before me, waiting. I ran forward, and grabbed it—and Declan—with both hands.
Forever.

The Spar Island Girls
This story, along with the others that I’ve done with this amazing group of authors, is part of a series of my own called the Spar Island Girls. This is a group of girls that grew up in Bristol, Rhode Island. Off of the city, there’s a little set of islands that are always shifting—there’s more of them exposed at low tide. They’re more land spits in Mt. Hope Bay than islands. But people like to go out there and hang out for the day, and that’s what my Spar Island girls do.
Their parents were all friends growing up, and they would take their boats out and go hang out for the day. Even though most of the girls have moved away, they have never forgotten those friendships.
And there you have it—the Spar Island Girls. Look for them as me and my author besties keep bringing you our delicious collaborations!

I'm a Midwestern lady, living life in the Rocky Mountains. I adore strong men with hearts of gold (even if that gold may be a bit imperfect) and that's what drives me to write the stories about them. The longer I do the romance gig, the more firefighter calendar pics I seems to collect. That's normal, right?
