The Reed Fields Page 17

They walked back inside the temple to finish the nightly offerings. When Meehi was alone, he returned to the Sacred Pond. Looking at the same two stars he spoke out loud.

“Akua, I am sorry for all of the heartache in your life. Forgive me for the pain I caused you. I promise to hold your memory close to my heart. I can’t wait to see you again.”

Meehi sighed before continuing, a tear formed in his eye.

  “My beloved friend.”

Meehi began to work as usual the next morning. Suddenly, he felt a tingling sensation on the back of his head. At that moment, he remembered the papyrus scroll that Akua had given him six days ago. He fetched it immediately. He leaned against a statue of Horus as he read it.

  The Thinning of the Veil

The Temple of Isis on the

  Island of Philae reveals a

  magnificent truth. This is

  the glory of the Mother.

Isis takes care of her child,

  Horus, without a husband.

She is strong. But She does

  much more than that.

She is the Mother to us all.

She is known by other names,

  Athena in Greece and

  Akua’ba in the great tribes

  to the south. Regardless of

Her name, we all are blessed

  with a nurturing and compassionate

  love that comes from Her.

Between Her and us lies a

veil. We can’t touch it and

we can’t see it, but it is there

  separating us from the

afterlife. And if we can somehow

diminish it, we can live closer

to the gods and to our dead.

  The Ancients knew this. Their

  great monuments convex into

one path to the Heavens. This

  also symbolizes the righteous

  progression in life.

We too can work towards this.

  Our lives can effectively break

  down this invisible barrier.

  Showing kindness and love to

others as well as learning the

mysteries of the gods and the

  afterlife is crucial to our

lives. The gods have given us

  a great prospect in life

and it is up to us to seize

  it and watch it blossom.

Meehi’s eyes filled with the makings of tears as he read Akua’s work.

My beloved priest and friend has left a gift for everyone in Egypt. Through all of his ordeal, he found a way to touch people in his twenty two short years.

Meehi immediately took the papyrus scroll to the temple scribes to have it copied. Vizier Ankhu was to depart Heliopolis, so Meehi wasted no time finding him. The vizier was still in the House of Life. After it was copied, Meehi took the original scroll to him.

“Vizier Ankhu, I ask that you read this. Akua wrote it before he died.”

The vizier took a few moments to read it in its entirety.

“Meehi, this is beautiful. Akua was very wise and very caring.”

“Exactly. We now have two writings left to us by Akua-Mat. I think these works should become important to every person in Egypt. Perhaps we also make it a part of The Instructions in Wisdom that all priests, scribes, scientists and doctors must study?” Meehi said.

“Yes. Somehow I’ll make them persist as written work with the hopes of it becoming a part of the rich collective knowledge of Egypt. I think Akua has given a great gift to Egypt even in death.”

Walking from the House of Life back to the temple, Meehi felt he had done something good. He envisioned Akua smiling at him from the afterlife.

That same day, Reonet decided to face her fears and return to the Catfish and Crocodile Pool. Since the brutal murders, she had been constantly seeing those tragic last moments in her mind. It was hard for her, but she marched straight to the scene of the crime.

The market was busy as usual. There was no visible trace of the blood that spilled yesterday. She walked up to the pool and just stared. While she was there, a passer-by recognized her as the priestess with Akua-Mat yesterday. He walked over to her.

“Excuse me, but were you close to the priest that died yesterday?”

The passer-by smiled at Reonet. She immediately felt at ease.

“Yes, Akua-Mat was my close friend,” Reonet replied.

“Akua-Mat has been the talk around here for the last week. Will you tell me about him?” the passer-by said.

Reonet was pleasantly surprised. She sat on top of the pool’s stonewalls. The stranger sat down beside her.

“Akua-Mat was a fine man, a loyal servant to our nation and to the gods. Yes, Akua-Mat was one of the finest people I have ever known,” Reonet told him.

Reonet was proud to speak of her friend. So proud, her voice was quite a bit louder than usual. The market was so busy that others heard her mention Akua by name. Soon, four more people gathered by Reonet. The original passer-by told them that the priestess was talking about Akua-Mat. To many people in the city, Akua was shrouded in mystery. Reonet just wanted to tell people about her friend. She was proud to have known Akua. And she was proud of his good heart.

Reonet kept talking and, before long, others were motioned over to hear about Akua. Reonet told a crowd of nearly forty all she knew about Akua, his lineage, his plight and his travels.

“…But the best thing about Akua-Mat was his passion for life and love for the things in it like family, friends, wisdom and religion. He really wanted to help people in life. Though his struggles were unwelcome, he made the best of them. When he was in Greece, he learned some of their history. He even learned from the well-known philosopher, Plato. Recently, he recorded some of his thoughts on papyrus. He left us two scrolls that are being preserved as we speak.”

“How can we learn from his scrolls? Are we allowed to see them?” one woman asked.

Reonet was about to mention the Instructions In Wisdom, but she caught herself finally realizing that those would not be available to everyone.

“How about if I bring them tomorrow and read them aloud? That way I can read to you and we can talk about what they meant to Akua and to us as we go through life.”

The majority of those gathered responded positively and Reonet told them she would return the next day. Reonet could not wait to help establish Akua’s legacy.

“Thank you all for opening your hearts to Akua-Mat. He was a wonderful man. Even though he has passed from this life, he would love to be able to touch the heart and soul of each and every one of you. Akua-Mat truly was a blessing and a gift to Egypt.”
