  Prologue

Imagine a world where werecats at one time did indeed exist, but became extinct eons ago. Then, because their recessive genes managed to survive and get passed on -- thanks to some rare unions with humans -- DNA with these special werecat genes continued down through the ages, further evolving and being inherited by a very small number of descendants. And finally, imagine that two of these very unique individuals -- each one in a billion -- would meet, fall in love and become parents. While three of their four children would be normal humans, one -- their daughter Missy -- would be very special. She would be a werecat.

And thus, Missy the werecat was born in today’s era. She’s not exactly the same as those ancestor werecats, but she does have many special abilities -- not the least of which is being able to transform, with a great shimmer of light and burst of energy, into another form. She can Change from being fully human in one instant to being a cat animal in the next. In her cat form, she has the same body mass as in her human form and fully retains her human intellect and memory. And, in either form, she has all the instincts and abilities of a wild, predatory mountain lion.

Eventually, she will learn how to Change forms back and forth, and how to manage and control her special abilities. Her genetic anomaly, combined with some evolution along the way, brings her cat endowments into her human form: speed, strength, agility, and enhanced senses of smell, hearing, taste and sight. She is also gifted with rapid healing and is immune to disease. As Missy will gradually learn about herself, she will go from being a girl with great skills to a grown woman with truly fantastic powers.

  Chapter One

  Jul 2013

In the middle of her last night at soccer camp, Missy awakened with a strong desire to get up and go outside. She just knew this was something she had to do, and right away. So, slipping out of bed and quietly making her way down from her dormitory room, she did go out. Although there was a full moon, it was cloudy and very dark outside, with no streetlights or anything else to illuminate the landscape. However, the darkness did not bother her at all. She could feel something pulling at her, drawing her away from the dorm. And, she also noticed her ability to see in the dark was somehow much greater than ever before.

She had always been able to see, hear and smell things to an extent far greater than those around her, but tonight it was even more so. She knew she had other special abilities as well. She had gradually come to realize that others were not able to do all the things which she could do. She had accepted that she was just different. She had shown an athletic ability which was quite advanced, excelling in little league and youth soccer programs, as well as at karate practice and during any gymnastic events. She easily had won all the competitive races at school and in her local community. All of that had lead to her attending soccer camp every summer.

Soccer camp was in Keene, NH and near Monadnock Mountain. It was now late July, a month after her 13th birthday, and Missy had really been enjoying her time back at this wonderful camp once again. It was so beautiful there! A whole week away from home, where she was getting some elite training in a sport where, as a junior high school player, she had already been noted as being really special. Her Mom was keeping all the news articles written about her in a special scrapbook along with several photos.

As this week at camp had been coming to a close, she’d been getting more and more excited about the fall season coming up. This would be her last year in junior high and she just knew her soccer team would go on to win the state championship this year and get to compete in the nationals. Then, the following year, she would finally be competing at the high school level. Her older brother and sister had both been telling her all about the fun activities they were experiencing in high school, and she could hardly wait to get there.

At night, she typically found herself anticipating and dreaming vividly about many of these things and had no trouble sleeping soundly all night long. That’s why waking up with this sudden need to go outside in the middle of the night came as such a complete surprise. What made her wake up and why did she feel this compulsion so strongly? She could not understand what was happening. Her entire body was experiencing something new and strange, something she had never felt before. Her heart was pounding and her blood was racing! And, just why was she having all these tingly feelings?

Once outside, she was drawn towards the nearby trees which marked the edge of the deeper forest and she quickly walked over to them, crossing the courtyard and the small parking lot. The full moon suddenly came out from behind the clouds, shining down brightly. She glanced backwards just once, looking back the way she had come at the dormitory building she was leaving behind. She was thinking, “What am I doing? Why am I out here?” But, then she turned and walked deeper into the woods. She just knew this was something urgent and absolutely necessary.

Further and further she went, all the while continuing to experience all kinds of new feelings, with her senses hyper alert and more aware of sights and sounds and smells than ever before. Since she still had not had her first period, she began to wonder if that might be what this was all about. Puberty! Yes, she had been anxiously waiting for this as most of her girlfriends had already had their first period and had started growing hair on their legs, under their arms, etc. Shaving had been a big topic amongst the girls! And, boobs! And boys!

Missy was somewhat of a late bloomer and had not yet really developed. She’d not had her first period yet, in spite of various signs that things would be happening for her very soon. She had experienced some swelling of her breasts and tenderness of her nipples but was concerned she still looked very flat compared to most of the other girls. Although she now did have some hair growing in new places, she had not yet shaved under her arms … when would she finally be getting her period anyway!?!

But all the talks she’d had with her mother and her sister about this important subject had not really suggested anything like what she was feeling right now. Not only was she physically reacting to something, she was also getting so many thoughts and emotional signals. Whatever was happening was compelling her to be out here … something irresistible was forcing her. Nothing had prepared her for this. And yet, remarkably, she was not at all afraid. Somehow, she just knew …

And then … it happened! Her body just collapsed and her mind was overwhelmed, going to a quiet place deep within itself. She didn’t lose consciousness but felt as though she was in a dream state. She had no control. She knew there was some sort of Change happening to her and then there was a shimmer of light and a burst of energy. She could feel this was coming from within, from somewhere deep inside and from something that was a part of her. There was no pain or discomfort during this Change. Then, in the next moment, everything was suddenly new and different. Very different!

She was a cat. Her form was no longer human but that of a large animal, very much like a mountain lion. She had no idea of that, at least at first. She did notice a huge difference in the sounds and smells around her, which now were even more noticeable. And when she looked out at her surroundings, she could see much more clearly, but without all the color. Since it was dark, there wasn’t much awareness of that just yet. Instead, she was noticing more the way things felt to her body. Her arms and legs were very different and were covered with fur. So was the rest of her body, even her face. Her hands and feet were now paws -- paws with claws which could extend and retract.

Missy got up from where she was lying, but now it was on all fours. As she took a few steps, the reality of her new form gradually seeped in. She still weighed the same. But, as she moved, everything was different. New and strange at first. Yet, somehow, in this form, she seemed to have an instinct for just what to do. She did not stumble or fall. She wanted to explore, to get a sense for her surroundings. She also wanted to shimmy out of the clothes she was still wearing which were loose yet still restrictive. As she rubbed against some bushes to help remove these bedtime garments, her thoughts began to race. She tried to mentally cope with what had happened, with her new animal form, even as her body processed all the ways she was now experiencing everything so differently.

Once free from her clothing, she knew she needed to move on and get away, to head out through the trees and go onward to find somewhere she could be safe. This need was not a conscious thought, but something instinctive … something part of the awareness she now had in her new form. Slowly at first, but then with an easy pace, she began to follow the paths leading off through the dense underbrush. She knew there was a mountain nearby and she headed in that direction.

Once she had travelled a while and was far enough out so the sounds of civilization had all faded away, she began to really notice the scents of various other animals. She somehow knew that nighttime was when she must hunt, when she must find prey, in order to satisfy the hunger which was now raging inside. It did not take long before she sensed a raccoon up ahead. With almost no thought other than how she needed to do this, she followed the scent until she was able to surprise the animal and leap onto its back, quickly crushing its neck with her jaws. She had made her first kill. She had found food.

While she was eating, her human thoughts returned and she realized her thinking had become compartmentalized. For a while, her human thoughts had been set aside, deep within, in order to free her basic instincts which were needed to hunt and feed. And, another of those survival instincts was now telling her to find safety in an area of deep undergrowth and cover. Then, maybe she could think better, try to understand what had happened and consider what to do. She wanted to calmly gather her wits about her now that she was over the initial shock of being in this new form.

She knew she must eventually continue onward, up into the mountain where it would truly be safe. She was concerned about not only her own safety, but the safety of others as well. She wasn’t at all sure what amount of control she even had in her new form. But, for now, having fed and escaped all immediate threats, she needed to stop and rest. As the dawn approached, she allowed her ignorance and concern about what had happened to subside and gave in to the desire and need for sleep. Her first Change had not only made her ravenous but had also made her exhausted. So, she settled down and quickly drifted into as deep a sleep as cats are able to manage, while all her senses remained on alert should any actions be needed.

Missy thus began the process which would meld her dual nature into one. This would take some time, with several learning stages to yet go through before full acceptance and understanding would be reached. But, life’s experiences would be her teacher and achieving a balance between her human side and her cat form would indeed take place. She would evolve and she would grow into her full werecat potential.

  -----

Back at soccer camp, Missy had disappeared. When she didn’t show up for breakfast or that day’s scheduled activities, the staff members began a search. After a few hours, they realized she really could not be found and phone calls were made. Her family was contacted. The police were called in. An investigation was started and the search quickly expanded with all possible resources being pulled in. Since no one could believe she would go off on her own and none of her belongings were missing from her room, there was great concern that she’d been kidnapped. The FBI was then called in.

Her family members were all quickly eliminated as suspects due to the distance of the soccer camp away from their home in Salem, Massachusetts and they all had various alibis, easily corroborated by their neighbors and co-workers.

After a few days, her discarded pajamas were found in the nearby woods. As this was days later and out in some dry, heavily wooded terrain, no sign remained of any large animal tracks which she might have left behind. The worry she’d been grabbed by someone was thus only further reinforced. The media spent many days covering the story of the missing girl from soccer camp, speculating all about her being a kidnapping victim with various possible scenarios including murder by some sexual predator.

  Missy was gone!

  Chapter Two

  Aug 2013 -- Jul 2015

And so, while her family and friends desperately sought for answers, while the investigators explored every possible explanation and while the media gave wider and wider coverage for Missy’s mysterious disappearance, time went on. And Missy? She went up into the mountains which was the only thing she believed she could do. First, she spent a few weeks exploring Monadnock Mountain, making that her territory. In time, as the months went by, she traveled all through the White Mountains of New Hampshire. She endured the bitter cold of winter, coping with various trials and tribulations but managing to survive.

She also tried to cope with what had happened to her, in spite of having no way of knowing how or why. While becoming a predatory cat animal which must hunt and kill other animals was not something easy to understand or adjust to, Missy nonetheless did eventually grow to accept herself and she learned to just keep going forward. She now experienced life in her cat form, while continuing to think with her human intellect. She simply adapted to this dual nature. When she looked at her reflection in any pool of water, she saw her large mountain lion appearance with a tawny, reddish color coat. She saw she had a very long tail. And whiskers. Her eyes were still green but now also had a somewhat golden appearance. Fortunately, she could recall and review all her childhood memories from before, when she was human. And so she lived each day, one day at a time -- as a cat.

Her cat instincts helped her quickly learn all she needed for surviving on her own. Things like finding food and water and how to stalk and ambush her prey and knowing how to cover her meals to hide and protect them from other animals. She learned to defend her kills from wolves and bears but tried to avoid such conflicts when she could. Her survival instincts also make her avoid humans, staying in dense forests and unpo
pulated mountains. These same instincts convinced her she must not return to civilization. The fear of the unknown was much too great whenever any thoughts of doing that arose. No, she accepted she was now a large cat and, since she had no idea how to reverse that, how to Change back to human form, she avoided all threat of being found. Only in isolation did she feel sure of being safe.

But, even in the mountains she wasn’t always safe. She was attacked and badly wounded by a black bear the next spring. The bear was hungry, after hibernating all winter, and challenged her for a deer she had killed. She let her cat instincts to fight and defend her food control her actions. Although she actually won that conflict and chased the bear away, she was badly mauled on her left shoulder and back during the fierce fighting. That healed up well enough over the next few days but did leave some permanent scars. From this, she learned to not always allow her cat’s nature to be in control of things, which was a valuable lesson.

Then, she received another permanent scar along her upper right thigh from a hunter’s bullet. Somehow, he’d gotten within range without her noticing him. The bullet only creased her leg, without damaging any bone or internal organs, so she did consider herself lucky. And, healing was again very rapid. But, it was the surprise encounter with that hunter which caused her to migrate south, leaving the White Mountains. She traveled down through the Appalachian and Adirondack Mountain Regions and ended up a year later in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.

  -----

Meanwhile, the search for Missy continued, in spite of there being absolutely no clues and her case gradually growing colder and colder. Her family never gave up hope and exhausted all possible avenues in their search. Her Mom and Dad were frantic at first but then grew more and more determined as the weeks and months went by. Since her family was somewhat affluent, although not rich by any means, they were able to keep the pressure on and influence the community. Efforts to find Missy remained constant. Every few weeks, a renewal of those efforts was made, with various rally events and fund raising endeavors to continue the search, raise awareness and hold the public’s attention.
