As Fate Would Have It Page 24

by Michael Louis Calvillo

“Where are you going?” Montgomery gestured at the simmering roux. She widened her eyes and smiled brightly. Her green eyes glistened and Montgomery felt his heart skip a beat, “Go on, I’ll take care of it.”

She skipped out of the room for the garage and presumably the ironing board. He watched her go and shifted his thoughts to after work plans. This was to be their first night on the town as an engaged couple and he wanted to do something special. He wanted–

“Montgomery!” Liz yelled from the garage.

He turned off the burner and ran out to see what she needed. Crossing the threshold, leaving the wondrous smells of the kitchen behind for the gloomy confines of the garage Montgomery felt the temperature dip. When he saw Liz standing beside the acid barrel, its lid still resting on the ground, things got even colder.

  Fuck.

“What the hell is this, Montgomery?” Her super sexy, super sweet demeanor shifted. Her eyebrows furled and her petite hands balled into angry fists as she locked him up with her eyes. Suddenly, that good feeling evaporated and he felt two feet tall, like a scared child who had been busted hiding something from his parents.

“What the fuck?” Pure venom poured from her lips.

  He stammered, “I, I…”

“You what? What the fuck is this?” She poked toward the barrel. Fresh bits of Ashley, half dissolved, littered its exposed surface.

Montgomery didn’t know what to say, happiness thwarted, guilt amassing, and he simply stood, mute, head hanging low in preparation for the oncoming onslaught.

Only my plague thus far I count my gain,

That she that makes me sin awards me pain.
