Another gust of wind carried the spray from the sprinklers across the sidewalk, hitting the boys with even more water.
“Who are you!” Steven cried.
The captain chuckled. “Who am I? Why, don’t tell me that you don’t recognize me. I am Captain Saunders… so glad to meet you.”
The captain held out his hand. Steven went to shake it, but when he tried to grab the captain‘s hand, he grasped nothing at all! His hand went right through the captains! He was not flesh and bone at all, but a ghost!
Steven let out the loudest scream of his life. “Let’s get out of here, man! It’s a freak n’ ghost!” He yelled.
At that moment, the figure of the captain began to slowly fade away. “He is a ghost! Run for it!” Johnny shouted in shock.
Steven and Johnny ran at full speed away from Annie’s house. They stopped at the end of the court and looked back. They watched in disbelief as an area of mist rose upwards from the spot where the captain was standing.
“That does it man…I’m never coming back here again!” Steven said, watching as fog suddenly obscured the entire front of the O’brien’s house.
“I’m with you!” Johnny cried. “Let’s get out of here!”
Steven and Johnny never bothered Annie again.
Annie slept peacefully that night as all of this happened outside. She woke up the next morning feeling happy and refreshed, as though something wonderful had happened. Bright sunlight was streaming into her room and the light danced on the wall opposite her bed.
She had just had a wonderful dream…. the captain came to her and she hugged him. Annie looked up into his radiant face. He smiled warmly and said, “I am at peace, now, Annie. I have completed my journey. Farewell.”
Annie waved to the captain as he walked towards the rising sun.
