Hunt shook his head in wonderment. ‘He does seem to get into all kinds of scrapes.’
McCord grunted. ‘One minute the man is in a Mexican hospital with memory loss, the next he’s being chased across the mountains with some young woman in tow.’
‘What woman?’
‘Our man spoke to her. Name of Virginia Maitland. British. Some kind of heiress and some story about someone attempting to swindle her and kill her.’
‘My God,’ Hunt said. ‘If it’s the Maitland I’ve heard of she’s worth millions. Inherited her late father’s business empire. Part of it is copper mining in Butte.’
McCord sat back in his chair. ‘It also appears that Brand’s memory has returned after all these misadventures. If he wasn’t my top man I’d…’
Hunt smiled. ‘There’s no way you’ll ever let him go, Frank. Despite everything, Jason is your best man and you damn well know it.’
‘That’s the problem. He is. I know it and so does he.’
‘Tell you what,’ Hunt said. ‘I can’t wait to hear just what he’s been up to on those mountains.’
McCord tried to rebuff him, but gave in.
‘So help me, Richard, so do I.’
