She smiled. “I’d like that a lot. Jade, I’m so grateful to you. I’ll never forget what you did.”

I shrugged. “Nothing to it—it’s all in a day’s work.”

  “Right—you aren’t fooling me.”

We both laughed, and she gave me a gentle hug.

“So what do you think the 2:57 actually represented?” I asked.

“I have no idea! Being a psychic isn’t an exact science, but sometimes it works so well it’s eerie.”

  “I’ll say.”

Kate gave me a thoughtful smile. “I love you, Jade Monroe.”

  “Back at ya.”

She stood and pushed the chair to rest against the wall. “I’m going to let you get some sleep. Would you like me to pick you up tomorrow?”

“Sure, I’d like that a lot, thanks.”

  “Good night, Jade.”

I watched as a reborn and confident Kate walked out the door.

  Chapter 65

I sat at the table with my dad, my fingers entwined around my coffee cup. I was thankful. Tomorrow was finally Thanksgiving, and that was what the holiday was all about—thankfulness. Amber and Kate burst through the door from the garage, their arms loaded with groceries.

I chuckled when they came in, and I watched as they dumped the bags onto the breakfast bar. My dad and I got up and helped put groceries away.

“Seriously, guys, you aren’t feeding an army, yet you have five pies here,” I teased.

“We all love pie, so I bought everyone’s favorites.” Amber grinned and brushed away a loose strand from her eyes.

I smiled at my sister—she was a beauty. It seemed that Amber and Kate were getting closer every day, and that made me happy.

My aches and pains were diminishing with the help of aspirin, and the only evidence of a scuffle were the scrapes across my face and a few bruised ribs.

My cell phone rang on the end table, and I crossed the living room to answer it. Jack was calling.

“Hey, partner, how are you holding up?”

“Pretty good. A few aches and pains but nothing I can’t deal with.”

“Good to hear. I wanted to let you know about Mandy’s case. The trial is over, and she’s going to an institution instead of prison.”

I sighed with relief. “That’s really good news.”

“Yeah, and Clark interrogated Tony. He isn’t talking about Jillian yet, but since her vehicle was found in Indiana, we reminded him that Indiana carries the death penalty. We’ll let that simmer in his brain for a while.”

I huffed. “I hope she’s found for her family’s sake. The holidays are going to be tough for a lot of people because of the Lynch brothers. Speaking of holidays, what are you doing tomorrow?”

“You know, the usual, a frozen dinner in front of the TV.”

  “You are not.” I chuckled.

“Nah—dinner with family. Same thing every year.”

“Good. Have a great Thanksgiving, Jack.”

  “You too, partner.”

I clicked off. It was time to relax and start the vacation I was supposed to begin last Saturday.

That night, we all turned in early. Amber said she was getting up at six o’clock to start the turkey. Kate promised to help her.

As I climbed in bed, I clicked off my lamp and said a prayer. I was thankful for my friends, family, and my town. I was thankful for my job and everyone who risked their lives to do the right thing. I snuggled against my pillow and closed my eyes.

I woke up, startled by a sound. I rolled over, afraid to see the time. I rubbed my eyes and tried to focus. If that clock read 2:57, it was going to get thrown against the wall. I squinted and looked—six a.m. I grinned and got up. The sound was coming from the kitchen. I remembered that Amber and Kate were going to start the turkey at six o’clock. I slipped on my robe and walked down the hall. Everyone was up, including my dad.

“Can’t a girl get any sleep around here?” I chuckled and filled my coffee cup.

  “Not today!” Amber said cheerfully.

My dad sat at the table, drinking his first cup of coffee. I hugged him, kissed his cheek, and clinked my cup against his. I walked around the breakfast bar and kissed both Amber and Kate then clinked cups with them too. I even kissed Spaz.

I gave each of my loved ones a thoughtful smile. “Today is going to be a great day and I feel truly blessed. Happy Thanksgiving, guys!”
