Finding Trix (Felines of Furyne Book 3) Page 23

“Then you claiming two mates is as unusual as Farron doing so?”

“Yes, it is. It shouldn’t be possible, but we all know that our bond is a true one, it’s just between three of us, rather than two.”

“And both your bond and Farron’s are permanent.”

“Yes,” Delta replied, even though it wasn’t a question.

“Then of the three of us, only my claim is weaker than the others.”

“Not weaker in my mind, just not permanent. I look forward to you claiming me many times during our lives.”

Trix snuggled closer, feeling reassured about his place in the relationship. “Tell me what it means to be a wolf?”

Delta smiled. “Well, to put it in context against the feline hierarchies, you have your high nobles who are descended from the big cats, your low nobles from the rarer smaller cats, and then the commons, right?”

“Yes. I’m a common, of course.”

“As if that matters to me.” Delta kissed him on the neck. “Anyway, canines descend from either wolves or regular canines. Those descended from the former are known to be larger in size, more prone to violence, and in recent cycles, far fewer in number.”

  “Why’s that?”

“Mostly, just dilution because of breeding with the regular canines.”

  “And the healer?”

“When I was a child I was very ill. Aria helped me through the illness. Without her I would have died. I don’t remember what happened, but my family believe that since that day I’m more wolf than canine. All my life, my parents have been anxious for me to take a mate from one of the more prominent canine families, to counter what they consider to be the tainting of the family name. As a final resort, it would appear they called Aria once more and wanted to ask her to reverse what she did to me. When I spoke with Aria alone she told me that it wasn’t possible. All she did was teach me to call upon the strength of the wolf that was already within me.”

“It sounds like your parents have put a lot of pressure on you over the years.”

  Delta snorted. “They have indeed.”

“Do you think they’ll come around? I mean, Farron’s parents seem to have accepted us as his mates.”

“They had little choice. It was that or a life of celibacy for him. My parents will be much harder to convince, if at all. Don’t worry about them. You and Farron are my mates for life, whether my parents like it or not.” Delta squeezed his hand and hugged him a little tighter. “You’re my family now. You, Farron, and our babies. Wolf or canine, I’m not going anywhere. If I had any doubts, I would never have claimed you.”

“I just hope you don’t live to regret your decision.”

Delta held him tighter still. “I could never regret what we’ve found together. This lone wolf has been well and truly tamed.”

Trix snorted and shook his head. “I wouldn’t say tamed. I happen to like your wildness, and I’m sure Farron does too.”

A sound from one of the cribs alerted him to one of the babies waking and he eased himself out of Delta’s arms to see which of them was ready for their next feed.

“Trix?” Delta joined him by the cribs.

  “What is it?”

“I know you’re worried that you don’t mean as much to me as Farron does, but I hope that soon you’ll realise this is not the case. That first night we spent together, the three of us were equal in that bed. I know that the time I spent with Farron means the two of us shared something that didn’t include you, but in time I hope that the three of us can get back what we had that first night.”

“I’d like that. I don’t mean to be jealous of the two of you and what you shared.”

“I know you don’t. Just like I don’t mean to be jealous of everyone you took into your bed from the moment we left to when we found you.”

Trix’s face heated, but he couldn’t stop his grin. “You were jealous?”

  “Yes.”

  “Really?”

Delta growled. “I’m forcing myself not to ask you for the names and ships of every male who fucked you, so I can go track them down and make sure they understand that they’re never to touch you again.”

“You do realise none of them would actually remember me?”

“I’ll bet they do. You are anything but forgettable.”

Trix leaned over to kiss Delta briefly on the lips. “Thank you.”

Delta smiled at him and settled back while Trix nursed each of the babies in turn.

By the time the sun was peeking over the horizon, Trix was ready to face the new day. One with his two mates, and their babies.

  * * * *

Farron sat on the dock as the boat approached. When he had first woken this morning he had panicked when he realised neither of his mates were with him and his babies weren’t there either.

The note on the night stand from Delta set his mind at ease and he grabbed breakfast for himself and Delta and hurried down to the waterside to greet his mates on their return.

“Hungry?” Farron asked as the boat docked.

“Starving,” Trix replied with a lick of his lips.

Farron glanced over his shoulder to check there was no one else on the path. When he was sure the coast was clear he slipped down into the boat and lifted his kilt. “Come drink up.”

Delta grabbed the box of food from Farron and dug in as Trix went to his knees on the floor of the boat.

Farron sighed with pleasure and closed his eyes. The morning sun warmed his face, or maybe it was the heat of his arousal. Within moments Trix was gulping down his cream as Farron climaxed. Delta swallowed his cries with a kiss. “Let’s try not to wake the babes,” he teased.

“They’re sound asleep,” Trix assured them as he licked Farron’s cock, then his lips. “It’ll be another hour before they want feeding again.”

One of them gave a shrill cry.

“I think you might be wrong about that,” Delta said as he lifted Vynor into his arms.

  “Pass him here,” Trix urged.

Farron shifted on the seat so that Trix could climb up between him and Delta. “I need to talk to you both about something.”

“Yes?” Delta replied. “What is it?”

“My father spoke with me yesterday afternoon. He wants us to stay on Cygon. He intends to retire soon and wants to spend more time with his grandchildren.”

“Do you want to stay here?” Delta asked.

“I don’t know. I’m not sure what any of us would do for work here.”

“I’ll be raising the babes,” Trix pointed out.

“With our help,” Delta added before turning back to Farron. “What would you have been doing here if you’d mated with Sera?”

“We’d have been working together to ensure that our territories are properly merged. I know Sera’s family’s lands are in need of repairs to a number of the public docks, and we need more workers in the fisheries. We would have been making sure to implement the terms of the mating contract to benefit our people.”

Trix hung his head. “It seems I’ve done more than just mess up your mating with Sera. I didn’t realise what impact my pregnancy would have on other people.”

“Nonsense,” Farron told him. “I’ve been talking to Sera and we’re going to see about doing what we can to implement the terms of the contract without the actual mating.”

  “Can you do that?”

“Of course. Contracts based on matings are considered to be stronger because we mate for life, but we believe our friendship will be just as long-lasting.”

“What happens if we leave?” Delta asked. “Can you still negotiate things?”

“Yes, but it would probably take longer to get things done.”

“What about you?” Trix asked Delta. “What would you do if we stayed here?”

Delta pointed out at the sky. “They’re looking for miners up on the asteroid belt. I can find work there.”

  “Mining?”

  “Why not?”

“But what about your courier work?”

“I’d rather not be going away on long trips if it means leaving my family behind. No, I can do mining work, or maybe use my ship to bring the minerals back here to Cygon. I’m sure I’ll find something.”

“Then it’s settled?” Trix asked. “We’re staying here?”

“If you want to,” Farron said. “I don’t want to force you to live on Cygon.”

Trix shook his head. “I’d like to make a home here. We’ll need to find somewhere to settle down as the babies grow. We can’t stay on the ship forever. I don’t want to go back to Furyne.”

“And I’d like to put some distance between me and Lupalia,” Delta added. “At least for a while, until my parents have come round.”

  “Are you sure?” Farron asked.

“Yes. So, it’s agreed. We stay on Cygon?”

Farron nodded. “I’ll make enquiries about vacant islands on the border between the two territories. There are always some empty on the borders as they’re a little remote from the busier islands.”

  “What about Delta’s ship?”

“He can either leave it where it is until he needs it, or I can look for an island with a port on it. There aren’t many, and it’s unlikely we’d find one that’s empty, but we might get lucky.”

“The ship can stay where it is,” Delta said. “Let’s just find a nice place to bring up the babies.”

“It’ll mean a longer boat ride for you to get to work if you head up to the asteroid belt.”

“Don’t worry about it. Our priority is the babies and making sure they’re raised in a loving home.”

Trix sniffled and Farron hugged him, carefully, so as not to jostle Vynor in his arms. “I’m being foolish,” Trix mumbled. “It’s just I never thought I’d have a mate, and now I have two of you, and you’re being so kind to me.”

Farron kissed him on the lips. “I never thought I’d have two mates, either.”

Delta chuckled. “That makes three of us.”

Trix rubbed his nose and let Farron and Delta fuss over him. Farron caught Delta’s eyes and picked up on his feelings through their connection. Their thoughts were the same, in that they were both eager to ensure Trix felt secure and loved.

“I just need a bit of time to get used to all this,” Trix said.

“We know,” Farron assured him. “And you have all the time you need.”

Trix sighed as warmth flooded through him, and he realised in that moment he was feeling not only his own emotions, but those of Farron and Delta. Their love for him was strong and banished his lingering fears.

“You feel it, don’t you?” Farron whispered.

  “Yes.”

  “Me too,” Delta added.

Farron kissed them both and stroked the soft feathers on Vynor’s head. “I’ve always believed that the best thing about my clan is the ability we have to share our feelings with our mates. None of my people can ever have cause to doubt the love of their mate, and I’m so pleased that you two get to experience that too.”

“It’ll take a bit of getting used to,” Trix admitted. “Not just the whole experiencing of another’s emotions, but knowing that the feelings you have are for me.”

Delta nuzzled him and licked over the bite mark his own claiming had left. “This is new for all of us.”

“It’s a new life,” Farron said. “One that we’re going to make as wonderful as possible for our babies.”

Trix couldn’t agree more. The babies he thought he would lose the day they were born, were safe and cared for by their three papas, and with his mates beside him, he was loved and cherished too.

  Five Years Later

Trix stood on the beach, watching Farron and Delta playing in the water with Eryn and Vynor. Ashner, like most felines, had inherited Trix’s aversion to water. Rather than get per paws wet, pre was building an elaborate nest out of sand.

“Papa, when will the babies arrive?” Ashner asked, for the third time that day.

“Soon,” Trix replied with a smile. I hope.

While his second pregnancy was certainly better than his first, now he was at the late stages of it, he was more than ready for the birth. His back ached almost constantly, and no amount of back rubs from his mates could erase all the pain.

“How many babies are you going to have?” Ashner asked.

“I won’t know until they’re born,” Trix replied. Delta had told him about a piece of human technology he had read about, that could show the babies inside him before they were born. Trix admitted to a little curiosity about the strange-sounding device, but he had no intention of going anywhere near humans again to find out how it worked. He would wait until the birth and find out then.

“Papa, will the babies have feathers or fur?”

Trix smiled as Ashner finally asked a question he could answer. “They’ll have fur.”

When he had told his mates he was ready to have another litter, they had talked about who would father them, and had decided it was Delta’s turn. They had then made sure that he was the only one to take Trix vaginally until they were certain he was carrying.

Ashner frowned as he considered Trix’s answer. “Why do Vynor and Eryn have feathers then?”

Trix knelt down on the sand so that he was at a closer level to Ashner. “You remember we talked about how I’m your carrying father?”

  “Yes.”

“And Papa Farron is your gifting father?”

Ashner nodded. “Because he gave you us?”

“That’s right. Well, Vynor and Eryn have feathers because they take after Papa Farron. But you have fur because you take after me.”

“But won’t any of the new babies take after Papa Farron?”

Trix shook his head. “Not this time, because Papa Delta is the gifting father of the new babies, and he has fur, just like we do.”

Ashner smiled. “Maybe next time Papa Farron can be carrying father, so there are more babies with feathers?”

Trix smothered his mirth quickly. I wish. “I’m sorry, but Papa Farron and Papa Delta can’t carry babies.”

  “Why not?”

“Because we’re not special like you and Papa Trix are,” Delta answered as he joined them.

“Had enough swimming?” Trix asked as Farron and the children joined them.

“For the moment,” Farron replied. “We’re going to head back to the nest for some food. Are you and Ashner coming too?”

Trix nodded, and with Delta’s assistance he clambered to his paws.

Ashner jumped up and waved pres arms in a silent request to be carried.

Delta picked per up and swung per onto his shoulders. “Sorry, but Papa Trix is already carrying a heavy litter. We don’t want to break him, do we?”

Ashner giggled and shook per head.

Trix rubbed his belly and felt the movement of new life within him. Farron and Delta had pampered him throughout his pregnancy. They had done everything they could to make sure he was comfortable and to prepare for the new arrivals. He couldn’t put into words how grateful he was to them for all they had done for him since rescuing him from the Cage.

Farron and Delta were the best mates he could ever have wished for, and he had long ago revised his opinion on the myth that there was a mate out there for everyone. Having found his, he was now prepared to agree that all myths had at least some basis in reality.
