Kingdom of the Dead Page 30

by Pavel Kornev

And all of this had been done unofficially, bypassing all existing laws and regulations. It was the clandestine behind-the-scenes games played by cannibals each of whom had their own interest in this. And as soon as you tried to delve into it, you realized that they only differed in the cooking method.

  Shit!

“Get a grip, Kitten,” Isabella snapped at me again. “XP doesn’t earn itself! There’s a battle raging in the city and we need to take what’s ours while the possibility still exists!”

Indeed, a constant clamor seemed to be coming from outside. The window panes reflected the flashes of explosions which made the walls quiver and the floor shake underfoot.

She’s been right. I had to think about the future. I had to move my ass.

I pulled myself together. “Haven’t the Lighties forced the Spawn out of the city already?”

She sniffed. “The Light coalition has broken up! The Orcs have renounced Darkness and made the teaching of Chaos their official religion. They’ve already taken about a dozen Towers of Power on the border, primarily on the Light side. Everybody else rushed to defend their properties. Only some squads of the Sons of Light are still left in the Kingdom of the Dead.”

“Was it the Swords of Chaos who’d instigated the orcish mutiny?”

“Exactly. They were fed up with constantly being second-class citizens.”

  Very well. “Where’s Goar?”

“He’s still helping himself in the scroll repository,” Isabella replied, listening intently, then barked, “Come here, goofy!”

Just as she spoke, the front door shattered. The knight in reddish orange armor stepped inside.

He looked awful. His dented armor was covered in blood, his pauldrons deformed, his helmet buckled.

“There you are!” Barth Firefist laughed hoarsely as he raised his hands over his head.

A soft glow enveloped his body. His bleeding wounds healed; his armor restored. All of a sudden he stood there healthy and vigorous.

“You’re done for, Johnny boy!” he growled, swinging his infernal mace.

Isabella held her staff out in front of her. Goar dropped his scrolls and drew his black sword from behind his back. Neo who was just coming down the stairs froze, then pursed his lips and kept going. I had a feeling that darkness itself feared the newly-minted Commander of the Order of the Black Phoenix.

Unhurriedly my hand closed around the hilt of my frosty flamberge. I smirked,

“I’m done for? Well, that remains to be seen.”

  About The Author:

PAVEL KORNEV is a popular Russian author whose writing crosses the boundaries of the sci fi thriller, fantasy adventure and steampunk. Genre mashing has long become his signature style.

“His books are a page-turning mix of non-stop action and hard-boiled detective stories in the edgy atmosphere of steampunk noir. Far from being a knight on a white charger, Kornev’s typical protagonist is an everyday man with his fair share of flaws who puts his talents to good use. His heroes struggle to survive and win their places in the sun; but most importantly, they manage to preserve their humanity even in the direst of circumstances.”

Pavel is a professional economist who spent years working for a large bank – until his first novel, The Ice, became an overnight bestseller, allowing him to quit his day job. In his spare time Pavel jogs, swims and is an avid beer brewer.
