“Yes!” Julia yelled as she held her left hand out for him to place the ring on her finger.
The guests chuckled as Dax pulled the ring away from her.
He smiled. “I haven’t asked you yet.”
Julia jumped up and down with excitement. “Okay.” Her eyes widened. “Ask me already.” She tapped her fingers on her thighs then shook her hands to stay her nerves and channel her excitement.
“Julia Newel, you came into my life when a shooting star streaked across the sky. And like that star, you’ve brought light and purpose to my dim existence. This stone,” he held the ring in the air, “is a symbol of my love for you. Alexandrite is as rare and unique as you are. By night, it appears ruby red. Let it remind us of the passionate life we will share together.” He gave her a wink that nearly caused her to melt into the floor. “By day, emerald green, signifying the new life we will have and create together, my commitment to care for you physically, and my pledge to always be your friend—a friendship where I will strive to constantly bring you joy. It is more precious than diamonds, rubies, sapphire, or emeralds, just as you are more precious to me than anyone else in this world, and I promise to cleave unto you and only you for eternity if you’ll have me.” He blinked his golden eyes. “Julia, will you be my wife?”
“Yes,” she whispered, kneeling beside him. “You’ve brought a happiness into my life I didn’t know I was missing, and now that I’ve experience that joy, I can’t imagine my life without you.”
Dax placed the ring on her finger, causing her emotions to peak and her eyes to well. He pulled her into a soft kiss, his own eyes moist and bright. She blinked away her tears as they stood to be congratulated by their friends and family.
Julia spent the next thirty minutes hugging everyone and smiling, but all she could think during the well-wishing was how she wanted to be alone with Dax to snuggle and kiss him again and again.
Her guests stepped to the side as a handsome group entered from the front entry, dividing the room as they passed. Dax leaned into Julia’s ear. “Please tell me you know them, and they’re not here to transform us.”
Julia laughed. “What’re you talking about?”
“They’re vampires, right, with their suspiciously perfect bodies?”
“Tori!” Julia exclaimed as her interior decorator, one of the “vampires” with perfect facial features and luxurious dark brown flowing hair, stepped forward.
“Julia.” Tori gave Julia her signature hug, her sweet perfume seeping into Julia’s clothing. Julia always smelled like Tori the rest of the day after they embraced. “Happy Birthday and I was just texted about your wedding plans. Congratulations!” Tori turned to Dax, wrapped her arms around him and held him tight. “Thank you for saving my son today.”
“Ethan’s your son?” Dax questioned. “How’s he doing?”
“Amazing, thanks to you.” Tori kissed his cheek. “I’d like to give you something special for saving him today.”
“Not necessary.” Dax shook his head. “Anyone would have done it.”
“But not anyone was there, willing, and able to,” Tori argued. “And I married the last guy who dug my son out of the snow.” Tori rested her hand on her hip as she raised an eyebrow in defiance. “So, you might as well just accept my thank you gift.”
Dax gave Tori an innocent, yet heart-stopping smile that, if he hadn’t asked her to marry him minutes before, would have turned Julia green with jealousy.
“When you put it that way,” Dax said. “I will graciously accept your gift.”
“Good, because now that the two of you are engaged, Meri and I would like to assist with the wedding plans and give you two a destination wedding to remember.”
Julia’s hands flew to her open mouth. She had heard stories of the weddings that Meri and Tori had given other members of their family.
Tori continued, “We’ll cover all the costs, including all expenses paid for your friends and family. All you have to do is give us everyone’s measurements and show up. You’re family with the Terrences now, and this is how we share our love.”
Julia’s mom came to her side. “Destination wedding?” She cooed her approval. “How perfect. How did the two of you meet, Dax?”
Julia’s blood pressure spiked. “Let’s dance.” She pulled Dax’s arm, anxious to get him away before too much truth came out.
“New Year’s Eve. I think it was the song I sang to her that did it.” Dax kissed Julia’s forehead. “Right, Jules?”
Julia’s mother wrinkled her lips. “But you told me you were going to go meet up with your firefighter boyfriend on New Year’s Eve?”
“And I did.” Julia winked as she pulled Dax to the side, wrapped her arms around his neck and led him in a dance. It was time to come clean. “I want to dance with you to the rhythm of the stars while I confess that having you, February, here at my birthday celebration as my boyfriend was my objective in going to that New Year’s Eve Party. When I found out you had a thing about not dating a girl more than a few times…” she shrugged.
“Computer,” Dax yelled above the noise of the crowd, “play Latin dance music.” He lifted Julia’s arm and spun her around in several quick spins. “And I have a confession to make. Latin dance doesn’t scare me. I’m actually pretty good.” He did a little Salsa swish of his hips and put her down into a ballroom dip, ending the move with a sultry kiss that sent sparks shooting through her heart. “It’s in my blood.”
