Sam and Deb were on their way to a restaurant that Deb had suggested. They sat in a booth looking at each other struggling to find words.
“Why don’t you tell me about yourself?” Sam suggested.
“I teach sixth grade math and I broke up with my girlfriend of three years ago two months ago.” Deb looked away. “It’s been hard.”
Sam was surprised that Deb was talking about her ex. “I know what you mean. I fell in love with a woman who has lived most of her life as a straight woman. Once her mother found out, she broke up with me.”
“I’m sorry, Sam. Jen told me she was bored with me. That our sex life was a disaster. We were never the type of couple that went through the stage of ‘we couldn’t keep our hands off each other’,” Deb chuckled. “So I don’t know what she was complaining about.”
Sam sat there thinking about her and Catherine. Sam ached to touch Catherine, to bring her to explosive orgasms, and what Catherine did to her was the most erotic experience she had ever been through.
“What about your sex life with...?” Deb asked.
“Cate and I had trouble leaving the bedroom,” she said with a grin.
They finished their dinner and Sam drove Deb home. “Thanks for going out with me. It was nice.”
“I don’t think either one of us are ready to start dating. Are we?” Deb asked truthfully.
“No. You’re right.” Sam kissed Deb’s cheek. “Good night, Deb.
“Good night, Sam.”
CHAPTER TWENTY SEVEN
Sam was driving to Catherine’s house without even realizing she had done so. She found herself in her driveway wondering if she should get out of the truck. Sam watched as Catherine opened the door and looked out. She got out of the truck and walked toward her.
“What are you doing here? Aren’t you supposed to be on a date?”
Sam walked in behind Catherine and took a seat on the couch. “I was and it ended.”
“What’s the matter? You couldn’t get her to sleep with you?” Catherine asked and then covered her mouth. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said that.”
“I didn’t try to get her into bed,” Sam said softly. “I don’t know why I came here, but my truck had other ideas.”
Catherine chuckled. “Yes, your truck drove here all by itself.”
“I had to see you, Cate,” Sam said looking at Catherine.
“Did you meet this woman at the bar?” Catherine asked.
Sam’s eyebrows rose surprised that Catherine knew. “Yes. She recently broke up with her girlfriend and I thought we would have something in common.”
“You don’t seem like you had a good time,” Catherine said moving her leg onto the couch.
“Neither one of us did.” Sam stood up. “I’ll just go. I’m sorry I bothered you, Cate.”
“Sit down, Sam.” Catherine took a deep breath. “Would you think I was a terrible person if I said I was glad your date didn’t go well?”
Sam eyes opened wide before a grin appeared on her face. “Why do you care? You don’t want me.”
“I asked you to give me time, but I understand you not wanting to wait for me to make a decision.” Catherine looked everywhere but at Sam as she spoke. “I’m sorry Sam for putting you through this.”
“I think I’d better go. If I stay, I’ll want to take you in my arms and tell you everything will be okay.” Sam stood up and walked to the door. “Good night, Cate.”
Catherine touched Sam’s arm. “Good night.”
****
Sunday morning, Sam was getting ready to cut the grass. Unfortunately, she didn’t have the energy to move. Sam sat on the lounge chair and stared into space.
“Did you finish already?” Catherine asked looking around the yard.
Sam turned and saw Catherine in that yellow sundress. Her pulse quickened immediately as she took a breath. “I haven’t started yet.”
“Good, then I’m not too late,” Catherine walked over to Sam. “You’re in my seat,” she said looking down at her.
Sam couldn’t take her eyes off the dress and ached to know what she was wearing underneath. She got up from the lounge chair with a chuckle. “Slave driver,” Sam mumbled as she went to the shed.
This time, Catherine left her sunglasses on top of her head. Her eyes followed Sam around the yard as she did her work.
Sam walked over to the patio. “If you keep looking at me like that, I can’t be responsible for my actions.”
“Get back to work, Sam,” Catherine said waving her hand playfully.
“I should charge for this show,” Sam said with a laugh.
“Give me your bill when you’re done,” Catherine said raising an eyebrow.
Sam finished the yard in record time. After her tools were put away, she walked over to Catherine. “I’m going to take a shower. I’ll give you my bill when I get back.”
Catherine watched Sam walk into the house. A few minutes later, Catherine walked into the kitchen and drank a bottle of water while she waited for Sam to return. She didn’t wait long because she heard her coming down the stairs quickly.
Breathing hard, Sam stood in front of Catherine. “I’m waiting to get paid now.”
“You didn’t give me your bill,” Catherine said with a laugh.
Sam reached into her pocket and handed Catherine a note.
Catherine read what she had written. “You want to know what I have under this dress. That’s it?”
Sam nodded feeling all the blood rush to her lower half.
“Well, I’m not going to tell you,” Catherine smiled.
“No fair, Cate,” Sam frowned. “You said.”
“I said give me your bill. I never said I would pay the bill,” Catherine insisted.
“Then I’ll just have to find out myself,” Sam said moving closer to her.
Catherine didn’t move and rested her hands on the counter behind her. She watched Sam move closer as her eyes closed in anticipation.
Sam slowly took her shaking hands and moved them to the hem of Catherine’s dress. Swallowing hard her hand began its ascent up Catherine’s leg. A moan escaped Sam’s lips as she fell against Catherine. Sam was shocked that she wore nothing under the dress and her hand dropped as if it was on fire. “You’re killing me,” Sam whispered against Catherine.
Catherine wrapped her arms around Sam. “Well, we can’t have that, can we?” Her lips found Sam’s and she kissed her deeply.
As the kiss ended, Sam asked, “Are you sure, Cate?”
“Let’s sit down, Sam.” Catherine led her over to the sofa. “I realized that my mother wants to control my life instead of being in it. I didn’t lie when I said loving you was like coming home. You’re the only thing that matters to me.” Catherine took Sam’s hand. “I’m really sorry for putting you through my fears and insecurities. I told you that when I came back, I wouldn’t leave.”
Sam giggled. “You said if I come back.”
Catherine rolled her eyes. “If, when, whatever. I’m not going anywhere, Sam. I want to be with you if you’ll still have me.”
“I don’t know, Cate.” Sam watched Catherine’s eyes open wide with fear. “I think I better check again what you’ve got under that dress before I give you my answer,” she said with a grin.
“Well, what are you waiting for,” Catherine said pulling Sam across her body.
EPILOGUE
“Honey, our guests are going to be here soon.” Sam tried to get Catherine to stop fussing with the photos on the mantle.
“I want you to leave some of these pictures of you and Robin in the living room. She was part of your life and she is now part of my life too.
“I want you to feel this is your home too. One day we’re going to unpack all your boxes.”
“Baby, I know it’s only been a week since I moved in, but I do feel like this is my home too. My clothes are in the closets which was the hardest part for you to accommodate. The boxes don’t have anything important. They’re in the
attic and that’s where they’ll stay for now.” Catherine wrapped her arm around Sam. “This is our first Thanksgiving together and our first holiday party.”
“I’m glad Jessica, Carol, Hailey and Sandy decided to join us.”
Catherine sat on Sam’s lap. “We all don’t have families to go home to, but we have good friends and each other. That’s all that matters.” Her lips pressed against Sam just as the doorbell rang.
“There’re our guests. Open the door to our new family,” Sam said holding Catherine to her.
