“The ring signified a wedding; I didn’t even know I had.”
* * *
Marriage was on my mind, and it was only one night away.
* * *
One final bash, before I was no longer free.
The night was made better by a beautiful woman that took an interest in me.
Anna.
* * *
We drank and danced, had a great night.
I thought that was it.
* * *
Then I woke up in her bed.
The morning of my wedding and there was now something on my finger.
* * *
A ring.
A wedding ring and Anna next to me.
* * *
What the hell happened?
* * *
Maybe a mistake was good.
It may be the best thing that ever happened to me.

Prologue
Anna
“Trust me Anna, he is just a little shy.”
“And he is your brother?”
Jeff shook his head and said that he was. And while I was there for a bachelor party, I didn’t know which one was the bachelor. Jeff was telling me that it was his brother that was getting married. They usually would have some kind of hat or signage that told her who was who, but not at this party.
It was becoming clear that he was being pointing me in another direction. I was here with three other friends and this was one of several bachelor parties that we were going to go to this week. I didn't really care who I was supposed to entertain. They were all faceless to me anyways. This was just a way for me to make some extra money to pay for college.
“So, what is his name?”
“His name is Scott.”
She smiled at his answer and told him that she would take care of it.
“Don't worry, your brother will have a good time with us. We will make him question marriage in general, and monogamy as well.”
Jeff smiled at me and said that he knew I was the one to do it.
“All the other girls are just your garden variety, but you're something special Anna.”
I smiled at him before I walked away. I suppose that he thought he was being nice and giving me a compliment, but it wasn't quite the compliment I was looking for. This wasn't the sort of place where I would get compliments anyways.
I walked over to the man an introduce myself.
“Nice to meet you Scott. My name is Anna.”
He smiled at me and I could tell that he was already three sheets to the wind.
“It's nice to meet you Anna.”
“Do you want to dance?”
He told me that he did want to dance, and I could feel his eyes all over me. I was wearing a bikini, so that was pretty self-explanatory. But he didn't leer at me like the other guys did. He was actually rather nice and for once, I wasn't dreading the dance. That was almost unheard of in my line of work.
His hands went around my waist and pulled me closer. I could tell by the way he was holding me, that he was a skilled lover.
More people were coming into the party and I looked over and saw a priest. It wasn't something that I usually saw at a bachelor party and I asked Scott what was going on.
“I don't know. There is no telling with my brother.”
I could see that because Jeff did seem a little squirrely. But he was also the one paying for the party, so I was going to do what he said. He wanted his brother to have a good time and I was going to make sure that it happened.
I climbed on top of his lap and started to gyrate against him. He held himself so stiff, that I had to giggle a little bit.
“Are you going to loosen up?”
His eyes were a little big and he shook his head. He didn't look like he was going to anytime soon.
“This isn’t the time for me to loosen up.”
He was holding back, and I knew that he was going to be my project for the night. One way or another, I was going to get Scott to chill out a little bit. His brother was right when he said that he needed a little bit of excitement in his life.
“Why don't you grab the bottle and come in the back with me? “
“I'm not into that kind of thing.”
“What kind of thing?”
“You know, um, paying for it.”
It wasn't the first time that someone had thought that about me, so I just waved it off. It was something that was even considered, because of what I did for a living.
“Well good, because I don't do that kind of thing either. No woman would ever charge you Scott.”
The smile on his face was a little more genuine and he had this look in his eyes.
“Well as long as it's just a little bit of harmless fun.”
Harmless. I don't think I'd ever been called that before. Looking at Scott, not an ounce of him was.
Anna
I woke up the next morning and I had a splitting headache. I usually did when I woke up from a night of partying. It was kind of nice to get paid to party. Most of the time I had to strip for a bunch of men, but last night had been different. There was a smile on my face when I finally got out of bed, but it instantly stopped when I realized that I wasn't alone.
I looked around and I was in my apartment, but there was a man in bed with me. It took me a couple of minutes to figure out what happened. When I went to get up, I realized that he didn't have any clothes on. What happened last night?
The last thing I wanted to do was wake him up. The guy looked so peaceful and I didn't know what to say to him. I didn't even really know who he was. His
face was hidden by the covers and I was just left with a naked somebody under the sheets. I finally fled as quickly as I could.
“Going into the kitchen, I started a pot of coffee and tried to get myself together. There was a lot of cash on the counter from the night before and I was counting it when I heard movement in the back bedroom. This didn't happen to me and I was trying to figure out why it was happening now. I never woke up with some random stranger in my bed. I wasn't that way. I didn't do that sort of thing at the job.
“Hello?”
I could hear the voice calling to me and I didn't say anything for a moment. Instead I poured a cup of coffee and put some creamer in it before I walked back to my bedroom. I had another cup in my hand for whoever it was. Whoever they were, they had to go, because I had a class in less than an hour.
As soon as I got in the bedroom, I said hello back, so that I wouldn't sneak up on him. The man in the bed jumped up anyways and he was covering himself.
“Where are my clothes?”
I started to look around the room because, I didn't know where they were. I had my clothes on, so that was all I really cared about. The way the guy asked rubbed me the wrong way as well.
“I don't know, let's look for them.”
“How the hell am I here with no pants on? Why am I here? Who are you?”
I was a little offended on the last question, because I figured he'd at least know who I was. We spent the last three hours together last night, talking and playing around a little bit. It got a little fuzzy at the end of the night though.
“I don't know why you don't have any pants on. I had clothes on this morning. And I don't really know why you are here. I remember going to your brother’s bachelor party the night before, but I'm not really sure how you actually got here. And my name is Anna. I thought you would remember at least my name.”
Scott was just shaking his head like he couldn't understand what I was saying. He looked bewildered and I kind of felt sorry for him.
“That wasn't my brothers Bachelor party. That was my bachelor party last night. I'm supposed to be getting married in less than an hour.”
I was almost relieved, because at least I wouldn't have to worry about getting rid of him. I had to leave just as much as he did.
“Did anything happen?”
I didn't have the answer for that either and I told him so.
“I don't really think we did. It's not something that I usually do, though I never wake up to some random guy in my bed either, so I am not really sure what happened.”
“Yeah, I bet.”
I looked over at him and just kind of shrugged. It wasn't the first time that I had heard things like that. Just because I was an exotic dancer, that didn’t mean that I was anything more than that. But it was always assumed.
“Well as much fun as this has been Scott, I think you should go. I have school to go to.”
“School?”
“Yeah, I go to the local college. Why do you think I dance for people like you?”
He shrugged and it looked like he probably never thought of people like me before. I was trying not to be offended. Really, I was.
“I don't know why anyone who would pick that sort of profession. I don't think I would be able to do it.”
I got the same comments all the time and I just tried to ignore it. I offered him the coffee I’d brought with me. It was like he was actually surprised that I would have thought of something like that. I don't know why this guy was being so rude. It was most likely because he was rich. I could tell by his demeanor that he was.
“Well I'm going to go jump in the shower. I guess just look around for your clothes, they have to be in here somewhere. I don't think we did anything, because I had all my clothes on when I woke up this morning. There must have been something in the drinks. I never drink too much to blackout. I've never done this before.”
He didn't look like he believed me, and I wasn't going to get any more offended than I already was. The best thing I could do with this situation was just to walk away. I was going to go take a shower and I figured that he wouldn't be here when I got back. Scott had been a lot nicer last night.
The water was hot, and I was thankful. It had been a long night and I had two classes that I had to go to today. It was most likely going to be a long day. And then I had another party to go to tonight. I was not looking forward to the next twenty-four hours, because it was going to be a blur. The only thing good about that, was I would be able to forget about Scott and whatever had happened the night before.
It bugged me all through the shower and I decided that once I got out of the shower, I would call Cindy or Heather and see what happened. Maybe there was something in their drinks as well. I wanted to make sure no one else was having my morning. Whatever it was, I wanted to talk to somebody else about it. I couldn't be the only one that completely blacked out, right?
I was soaping up, when I noticed something on my finger. I should have seen it right away because it was shining so bright, but it took me a minute. It took even longer for my brain to realize what it was that I was seeing.
“Why is there a ring on my finger?”
I said the words out loud and it echoed in the small space. The water drowned out some of the sound, but I could still hear it. A question that now was the most important one. Why was I wearing a ring? It was a ring that was on a very particular finger and it usually meant marriage. But I wasn't married. So why did I have a ring on my finger? What the hell happened last night?
More spooked than anything else, I got out of the shower and started to dry off. None of this was making any sense. And I wish for goodness sake that I could figure out what the hell happened last night. I got paid. I still had my clothes on. Under the usual scenario, it seemed to mash up.
All I could hope for, was that Scott would be gone when I got out of the bathroom and I wouldn't have to worry about it again. I don't know why I had a ring on my finger but at least it was pretty. It didn’t mean anything.
Scott
There was no reason for me to be here and I was kind of freaking out. If Lexie found out that I was here she would kill me. If she found out there were strippers at the bachelor party, she would probably be mad, and not talk to me for a month. Waking up at one of the stripper’s houses, would be a banishment that I could never get over. She would never forgive me.
That was all I could think about as I started to get dressed. Lexie was going to be dressed in the white gown that I paid ten thousand dollars for and she expected to be married today. She expected me to be on time, like always, and if I wasn't, banishment. Lexie was rigid and she wasn't one to forgive very easily.
I was getting my pants on when I felt metal on my finger. It ricocheted off of the button and I could feel it vibrating. I shouldn't have metal on my fingers. I shouldn't have any sort of jewelry on, but when I looked down at my hand, there it was. If I didn't know any better, I would think that it was a wedding ring. Why do I have a wedding ring on?
I shook my head and tried to figure it out, but there was just so many muddled and blurred visions in my head. Last night some had happened, but I couldn’t remember for the life of me what it was. Maybe the stripper was right when she suggested that something was slipped into our drinks.
What was her name? Anna. Right Anna. I doubt if she would like it if I called her ‘the stripper’. It must likely would be offensive, but I certainly didn’t have any prior experience with her class of people.
The shower turned off and I figured that I would wait a minute to talk to her. Maybe she would know why I had a wedding ring on. Anna wasn’t going to be so happy with me still there. She had made it very clear that she wanted me to leave by the time she got out. That had been my first thought. Get out of this place as quickly as possible before I am found out. But now I wanted answers, more than I wanted to leave the awkward situation.
When she came out, she had a sickening look on her face and I had a feeling that it mirrored my
own. She held up her hand and asked me what this was.
“What do you mean?”
“I mean that I have a wedding ring on my hand, and I shouldn't. I went to your bachelor party last night, talked to your brother and I don't remember much after that. Something happened.”
“I think so too. There's no way that I would have come home with you, if I would have been in my right state of mind.”
I could immediately see that I had once again made her defensive. I don't know why I was saying the things I was saying. Usually I was a lot better at this. I was just under a lot of pressure and I was letting my manners slip.
“I am sorry Anna. I really didn't mean that. I am just saying that I don't go home with random women. It has nothing to do with what you do for a living...”
I was the one that started babbling, because I was embarrassed for my words. I really was going to have to do better with this.
“You don't have to say anything. I was just wondering if you knew why it was here is all. I thought maybe you would remember something more.”
