“You’re cold.” She giggled, wrapping him in her arms, the dull gold of her wedding ring catching a stray beam of moonlight when she moved.
“Warm me,” he said, his voice hoarse with longing he no longer tried to hide.
“Again?” she asked, but she moved against him with slow, deliberate movements, her lips brushing over his, her scent and her touch making his head swim with longing and desire.
“Again and again and again.”
She slid her leg between his. “It’s very late and you have to be up early tomorrow. Jonas Phillips is bringing that man by. What’s his name?” Her tone was growing distracted as he slid his hand beneath the silk skirt of her gown and over her thigh.
“Dayton Hartman.”
“What a name,” she said.
“He’s very rich.” He brushed his mouth across the satiny skin of her throat. “He has three vintage Cadillacs he wants restored.” It was a beginning. If he could regain his reputation in the rarified world of restoring classic cars, he could make a good living for them both, make a place for himself in this town that Sarah had chosen to call her home.
“However did Jonas meet him?”
“Who cares?” he said, moving to cover her body with his. “If he gives me the commission, I’ll have work for the rest of the winter.”
“Is that what you want?”
“Yes,” he said. “It’s what I want. How many times do I have to tell you my wandering days are over. I’m here to stay. You’ll never get rid of me now.”
“Promise?”
“Promise,” he said fiercely.
“Then I will consider Mr. Hartman and his Cadillacs our own private little Christmas miracle.” He could feel her smile against his mouth. “I’ll remember to say a prayer.”
Michael rested his weight on his elbows, held her face with his hands so that she could see his eyes, see his thoughts and his love in the reflected light of the moon. “You are my miracle,” he said, lowering his head to taste her lips again. “You are the answer to my prayers.”
