“I love you, my darling,” he whispered, causing my heart to skip a beat. “There’s no one else I would rather spend eternity with.”

An evening at the movies would probably seem mundane to most people. To me it was heaven. I couldn’t wait to experience this and all things with Hawthorne—the man who saved me from the curse.

The Dragon Wars of my childhood and many childhoods before mine were over. At the time, the fighting seemed endless with multitudes of casualties on each side. Battling flying, fire breathing dragons with scales tougher than steel was no easy feat. The only thing that saved the human race was our numbers being ever greater. Because of this we were able to prevail.

When only a handful of dragons remained, they were ready to broker peace with us. While many wished to see the dragons wiped from the earth, my parents, the king and queen, decided the dragons could finally be trusted. Side by side they bravely met with the alpha, Orion, and the three of them signed an agreement that saw the end to the war.

The people were satisfied, and the dragons were given lands far from our own. Life was peaceful and easy, until it wasn’t. I enjoyed several happy years with my family, ruling from our castle overlooking what was once the ancient city of Baton Rouge.

Then, in one stroke, my uncle ruined it all. A man as impulsive and ambitious as he should have been watched more closely. He had designs upon the crown and thought by bringing down the rest of the dragons, he may get it.

In that one moment, he laid waste to years of prosperity. Out in the bayou when he shouldn’t be, my uncle spotted Orion helping himself to a midday snack. He took the old alpha by surprise, spearing him in the back and incurring the wrath of Celaena, Orion’s child, and the only dragon who knew magic. Rather than win the people to his side, he incurred not only Celaena’s wrath, but theirs.

Unable to take her anger out on the entire kingdom, a town strong and replenished, she cursed the heir to the throne with the immortal thirst for blood and burned my uncle to death where he stood.

A blood drinker would never be allowed to rule our kingdom, not when the people had come to fear me. With me out of the way and my uncle dead, the kingdom would soon be in upheaval. Celaena knew exactly what she was doing. Eventually, I was banished from the castle, forced to live out my days in exile, away from everything I had known.
