Prey till the End (The Endangered Series Book 3) Page 29

by S. L. Eaves

The corner suite seems a likely candidate and it isn't long before Quinn's high pitched voice penetrates the wall. I press my ear to the door. They are discussing the night's plan of attack. This sort of talk used to make my skin crawl, now I want nothing more than to be on the other side of this door.

I knock gently and smile into the eye piece.

When Crina flings open the door she embraces me with surprise and relief. She hugs me so hard my feet lift the ground. I can tell she wasn't sure she'd ever see me again.

The others crowd the doorway with wide eyes and warm smiles. I'm home.

My presence is not without its concerns.

They want to know what happened and what it means. And they deserve to know. Rex promised not to talk to them before I had a chance to do it in person. I will tell them everything. And hopefully they'll understand why. My fate is in their hands, which is exactly where it should be.

In the end it’s who they are that keeps me believing.

When you look into my eyes you don't see rapture, you don't see salvation. What you see is heartache and torment and the willingness to do anything to make it stop.

When you look into my eyes you see the world bleed.

What I did, I did for them. I did for us. And if I had to, I'd do it all over again. But I really hope I never have to. Because now there’s more than pain in these eyes: there’s freedom, fire, and a vision for a better future.
